Hard to have a discussion when the basic psychological concept that is endemic in society is not understood by one side of the conversation. Not really worth trying to dig out of that hole, in my opinion.

I do like your idealist view of how people SHOULD be. We aren't that way, of course. I wish it for all our futures.

Including men, and the internalized messages they get that warp their view of the world.

I have contended for years that men are in a much worse psychological state than women. We at least are encouraged to delve into our emotions, with varying degrees of success. Poor men are told to buck up and be "men". What a horrible thing to say to a little boy, or a preteen, or a teenager, or a young man entering adulthood, or a grown man dealing with a difficult world. No wonder men die earlier than women. The pressures they are under are enormous, with no way to relieve that pressure.

Generally speaking. There is a movement that has been gathering steam that is encouraging men to become more fully themselves.

The hike was great, albeit too short. We don't have great big waterfalls here on the Olympic Peninsula. It has been raining a lot lately. The waterfall that we visited was THUNDERING. I have never seen a thundering waterfall here.

Then again, I don't normally hike in the winter.

As for the weather... some Norwegian told a friend of mine -- There is no bad weather. Only bad clothing.

My clothing was fine, aided by the fact it started raining after we headed back home.

I don't doubt there are some people who exhibit an absolute psychological subversion to an ideology or person that is detrimental to their general good, ie. Stockholm syndrome, but to conclude that this is representative of even a significant minority of people who eschew victimhood in favour of responsibility for ones own situation is a long bow to draw. This is in the context of the last 20 years. Going back further to the time pre the women's rights movement or the abolishment of segregation, there are more empirical examples of internalisation.

Internalised whatever is a diminished capacity argument, limiting or removing entirely responsibility for ones actions and placing the blame elsewhere. An argument I find holds water if you're talking about blacks under Jim Crow where it would have been more desirable to either be white, or be closer to white, to escape oppression. Essentially a hostage situation.

It's a concept that loses steam as society becomes more accepting over time. Women now have the might of legislation + a significant chunk of the media behind them. They no longer have to be willing victims (although as #metoo showed, many were willing to be victims or at least silent via payout/nda when it served their purposes). If a woman is an equal to man, she must have the right to make her own decisions and the responsibility to be held accountable for them.

Hope the hike goes well. I imagine it's pretty chilly this time of year?

Street repaving in San Francisco

Porksandwich says...

Grinding the streets first inch or two off. When they stop it's probably because of a man hole, storm drain or something they are trying to not damage and have to go around or do the hand work around it.

Street looks dark right after they grind because the asphalt underneath has sections that aren't bleached from the sun and what not.

Then they smooth it to pick up the bits left, the street gets white looking because of all the scratching to the layer they leave, or because there is concrete underneath. They do bridges like this...two or more layers of asphalt to take all the wear and tear and water damage. Then replace it every so often so the concrete lasts longer.

Curb sides take the longest because they don't want to break the sidewalks, and the machines can only get so close without putting too much pressure on them.

Then they spray tar down to help the new layer of asphalt stick to the existing and help seal out water. If they don't spray tar down on old surfaces, asphalt tends to stick to itself and will hump up and become uneven when the guys roll it to compact it and smooth it out. You still have to slow gradually to stop this from happening. It's why when you drive down the road on a new street and you feel little bumps, often times you can't even see them. But it's because the rollers are stopping and the asphalt is developing little humps where they are pushing the material ahead of them as they compact like a little wave. And if they don't seal out the water well, if it ever gets between the layers and freezes, the top layer will just buck up and crumble...and you have a pot hole. Why they are along the edges the most, because the water gets in between the sidewalk and asphalt and runs underneath the new layer. Or sometimes it can get between the seams of the new asphalt, where one strip meets another if they don't match them well.

Parking lots, and country roads would let this crew do many more times repavement than a street like this. Because of the sidewalks, man holes, constricted lane of movement, and having to maintain the height of the road to maintain the flow of water.

Country road they'd just put another layer of asphalt down and then put approaches (basically a gradual ramp) on the other roads and driveways so cars can get onto it. No grinding, no sidewalks and stuff to worry about. Or if the road is really bad. They'd put one layer to fill in all the holes, then another on top of that.

Walmart on strike

@rottenseed
you make some good points buckaroo but your post is ignoring the giant pink elephant in the room.
@Sagemind 's most excellent post gave that elephant a nod but i think it prudent to point directly at that giant hulking pustulent piece of pink elephant flesh.

shall we?
1.corporate america is NOT based on true capitalism (actual free market) but rather state-run capitalism.this translates to lower or non-existent tax revenue, government subsidies and outright bailouts.
in other words=socialism.

2.you state that a corporation has a "duty" to maximize profits.i would agree if you changed "duty" to "legal obligation".

3.this legal obligation to maximize profits has led to all kinds of inventive and clever ways to defraud the public and local municipalities, from having them pay for infrastructure to waste clean-up.the amount of money spent by public,tax-payer funds is staggering which of course=socialism.

4.corporate america has a literal army of 35,000 lobbyists in washington whose sole purpose is to manipulate legislatures to pass favorable laws (de-regulation).85% of ALL laws passed are actually written by corporate lobbyists.

5.since the abomination ruling of citizens united (fuck you alito) corporate america now has the unlimited access to our lawmakers.walmart spent tens of millions on the last election cycle, how much did you give? and who do you think those legislators are going to be listening to?
money=speech in this country.

6.a corporation is considered a person but this person has no empathy, remorse nor feelings of solidarity with fellow humans due to its very nature written into law.
otherwise known as a sociopath.

seewhatimsaying?
the corporate charter needs to be re-examined and/or re-written because what we have now is corporate welfare/socialism with all the benefits going to the top while the working class foots the bill.

vote with your wallet? sure.that would work to a point but many people are limited concerning options and walmart is the only place these folks can afford.
sometimes this economic situation is due to bad choices but more often it is just life kicking these people in the balls.

buck up and go grab some higher education?
sure...and that works how often?
im not kidding.go check the statistics.they are pathetic.
i bartend part time and there are 4 masters degrees and 8 bachelors where i work, all in different fields.ask them how their "higher education" paid off for them.
$100,000 in student debt loans all to be able to ask "would you like some cracked pepper sir"?

now lets punch that pink elephant straight in the balls shall we?
the suggestion that somehow if labor becomes organized and demands..and receives..a more viable living wage with some humane and decent benefits will somehow automatically translate into higher priced goods and eventual job loss is just corporate propaganda which originates from the reagan years.

this is absolute and utter bullshit all fed to us by the very corporations seeking to dominate and oppress its work force.

remember,it is the legal obligation of the corporate board of directors to "maximize profit" not "shoot itself in the foot".
the suggestion that somehow paying its employees a living wage translates to the destruction of the company is apocalyptic propaganda.

what has been done to the american worker is perverse.over the past thirty years we have seen the creation of either wage-slaves or debt slaves..or both.
any way you wish to look at it.we are slaves in one form or another.

i mean..just go check the numbers.
worker pay has stagnated for the past thirty years, while corporate profits have continually broken records.
do you seriously think that a unionized labor force will kill walmart?
not a chance and to suggest otherwise just indicates that the corporate propaganda has been quite effective.

walmart could pay a living wage AND offer affordable benefits and STILL would have cheap goods.
and every step of the way they would be "maximizing profits".

welcome to the united states of corporate america!
will that be cash or credit?

Cop-Killer Suspect Lunges

harlequinn says...

The description is not accurate. I don't see him lunging at any family. What I do see at 00:07 seconds is a court room guard / police officer (not sure what he is) grab this guy first, as soon as the guy realises he is being man-handled he bucks up and starts fighting.

If this guy is / was found guilty then he'll get what's coming to him.

MythBusters Cannonball Experiment Gone Wrong Hits Houses/Car

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Ah - in the video clip above there is a shot of the cannon lying on its side. It appears to be the cannon that Tory built himself that they used for the "Ball and Chain Prison Escape" episode. It also appears to be mounted on a pair of old timey wagon wheels via some sort of shop-built rig. If there was any sort of anchoring system in place then I couldn't see it in the vid.

There's a reason why old style field artillery on wheels had that big wooden splay in the back. It provided an anchor point that prevented the canon from bucking up when fired. Looks like the Build Team took out thier home made cannon, had no anchoring system, and let fly with it. They used more powder than they did in that particular device in the past, and chaos ensued.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that JD Nelson (who was on the site) didn't say something. He usually seems to be pretty savvy about explosives, and should have observed that the cannon needed some means of fixing in place. Doesn't seem like thier other explosive expert (Frank Doyle) was there, or it may have gone better. I also bet if Jamie or Adam had been around that this wouldnt' have happened. They have experience with firing real cannons from the Pirate episodes, and they probably would have noticed a problem.

The Death of an Embryo

Anliz says...

Meh, that was a rather uncompelling video. I would have liked to see the statistics on how many embryos ARE used, or why those embryos are being thrown out. They could have bucked up and actually made a very educational short video but instead just said "Look, this guy is throwing a vial away...that vial could do something good"
