Pumped up Cello

poolcleaner says...

If you're ever in LA, check out Jon Brion at the Largo. He's a film composer (Punch Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees), record producer, who also happens to be a multi-instrumentalist that puts on a live layered loop show, doing everything from a traditional drum kit, to bass, all styles of guitar, and piano. I've watched him go from Mozart to honky tonk piano and then up into industrial noise, on into a Detroit rock medley, using only the music he recorded on stage. First time I saw the show in this little low lit club facing a small stage, I had the biggest hard on. I went to jerk off in the bathroom and Fiona Apple walked out. Sorry if I'm being a bit raw here, but it was THAT good.

I'm always impressed when someone can build layers with loops live like that.

Jealous Guy - Elliott Smith (John Lennon Cover)

Two of my faves.

If you like Jon Brion, do yourself a favor and check out his side-project with Jason Faulkner called The Grays back in the mid-90's.

They only released one album, but it was simply amazing.

Very interesting, but definitely should be in the non existent New Age long*ed haired channel. I call bullshit until they put this tin foil on my head and I take it for a spin. Until then... there's still DMT for your hyperspace symbolism's.

But then again, who knows. Brion Gysin and William S Burroughs created the Dream Machine. I have used a dream machine before and it was fuckionng mind-mindbogglingly awesome. I even vectorised the schematics for easy printing if you have access to a large printer and sturdy yet bendable cardboard. These days laser cutters are all over so one could just get the material and send it to a cutter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOZh7oSUY30

And of course lets not forget the stories of people that have used isolation tanks aka floats in which the floater enters the theta state.

Daft Punk song performed on Nintendo DS and Theremin

This looks fake. How are the tracks looping? At 2:35 you hear the same sound the DS makes in the beginning, yet he isn't playing the DS and the DS screen isn't doing anything.

Live electronic music is performed by playing an initial track, then placing it on loop.

Of course, this doesn't only apply to electronic music. I used to go to a club in West Hollywood called the Largo where a composer by the name of Jon Brion played drums, bass, piano and guitar, placed them on loops and hopped between guitar and piano to do improv. Didn't need anyone but himself to play an entire set.

Fiona Apple is an Extraordinary Machine

At the very last Jon Brion show at the old Largo, my friend Diana was in line for the bathroom with Fiona, except she didn't recognize her right away. This was right before Mr. Brion announced her "secret" appearance there that night, following, of course, Mr. Tench.

Nirvana - Polly (live)

guessandcheck says...

^while i don't think this is the best thing he ever did i'm sure it was crucial in procurring nirvana's place in culture. without the unplugged session i think people would be more likely to simply remember them as a noisy grunge band. unplugged really helps to establish the music itself. jon brion did an amazing cover of lithium once on his short lived vh1 show that i think does the same thing.

Fiona Apple - Fast As You Can (live)

I have to comment on this, because last month I witnessed the end of an era - the very last show at the Largo. Jon Brion, Benmont Tench, Fiona Apple, Sara and Sean Watkins. Goddamn, I'm going to miss that place.
