Anti-gay sting operation by NYPD
Well, first of all many men agreed in the store to go outside and have sex in a car and stuff. But when outside, the undercover mentions money and the vice squad pounces immediately.
Here's the real problem. Some men are out of state, some from Europe. So the assumption by the police is that men over 45 are traveling across the country to NYC to be a prostitute while in town for the two days...
ANyways, read this. It is clearly the case of trying to shut down gay pron shops. I think all the men were given disorderly conduct instead of prostitution. The idea here is just to arrest as many people as possible, put in a complaint, close the business.. It doesn't matter if the case is real or anyone is convicted, they only need to cite arrest statistics.

People getting laid off is not a fact of civilization, it's a fact of life. When a service is no longer in demand, the person will have to find something else to do.
I don't believe that any well qualified electrical engineer would be forced to work as a checker in Walmart. Do a search for "engineer" on Monster.com, and you'll see thousands of jobs -- http://jobsearch.monster.com/Search.aspx?q=engineer&sid=%2D1&cnme=&rad=20&cy=us&brd=1&re=&JSNONREG=1
