Modern Bolivia: Chile II?

rougy says...

Update:

Emboldened by a new leftist constitution, Bolivia President Evo Morales on Saturday handed over ownership of farmland seized by the state from wealthy estate holders to poor indigenous people.

Morales handed out around 94,000 acres of lands recently confiscated from five big ranches in Bolivia's wealthy eastern lowlands, a stronghold of his conservative political opponents. The ranchers have been accused of employing workers in conditions of semi-slavery.

^ Because we all know government regulators aren't corrupt and don't manipulate laws to benefit specific companies that they want to succeed. We all know that laws are always good and should trust everything that is a law. Wake up sheeple, the government is not full of scruples anymore than the private sector, the only difference is one you can vote directly with your dollars and the other your vote is diluted in Representative government officials; who, more often than not, are concerned with political things and power more than you.

Laissez-faire doesn't necessarily mean 0 liability either. If you are trying to make a system that preserves liberty, then people who dupe and defraud people can be held liable with the failure to live up to their end of the financial deal. Deregulating the housing market in one way (trading securities) and not in the way that it mattered (not being about to ask questions to minorities about employment or income when considering certain loans) was the cause of this. Level the playing field kinda logic usually ends up in the same place, everyone broke. Ask Russia, Poland, Bolivia, Cuba, ect ect ect.

Peter Schiff still running into fools......

GeeSussFreeK says...

Peter points out one of the main flaw in the Keynesian economic theory in about the midpoint of the video. His contemporary states that since unemployment is on the rise that inflation won't be a problem, this is because of his obvious Keynesian background. In the Keynesian model, it views the function of the economy in such a way that you can not have inflation and high unemployment...they are mutually exclusive in other words.

However, during the late 70s and early 80s we went through a time of what would be called stagflation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagflation). It was a time of high unemployment and inflation which should of been impossible. In short, the mass of people that run the financial world still operate on a defunct model. As the old adage goes, you can't teach a old dog new tricks, and the same goes here I guess. All the old players are still operating on the old Keynesian model as were the generation that followed.

All the cures that are being suggested are just MORE government spending. This didn't work in Germany after the war, it didn't work in Bolivia, it didn't work in Russia, it didn't work in Austria, it didn't work for Great Britain, it didn't work in France, it didn't work in Poland, it didn't work in Chile; here is a hint, it isn't going to work for us either. Stay tuned for the complete devaluation of your 401k and all your savings!

McCain thinks Spain is a neighbour of the U.S!

balabing says...

Right before this exchange, the reporter asked McCain a series of question regarding South America countries that are hostile to United States like Bolivia and Venezuela. Clearly, she's changing gear in the interview and said, "let's talk about Spain." But I'm sure McCain didn't hear her and thought she's asking about the President of some other South American country that's been thumbing their nose at United States. It's very obvious he got confused but don't expect the McCain campaign to admit it.

Another possible explanation is that McCain really do not want to invite the Spanish President. Ever since Spain pulled out of Iraq, Bush's been giving Spanish government the cold shoulder. The current Spanish President's been in power for several years now but have yet to be invited to the White house. The reporter asked this question because it is a good gauge of what kind of relationship will Spain and United States have after Bush leaves office. McCain might be saying that if Spain don't want to work with United States internationally, then don't expect a change from the current state of relationship.

Sept 11 - The start of a dark era, for Chile

Common Dreams

Another typical example of conservative Republican ideas about "freedom."

It doesn't matter what the people of Chile want.

It's what corporate America wants.

And they're doing the same shit right now to Bolivia.

World Bank - Making it illegal to collect rainwater

10302 says...

Bidouleroux - I have to say that it is indeed you that has a totally bogus argument. Electrical signals in wires and water flowing though a pipe do not operate on the same principle.

With water, like with telecom and power systems, a single infrastructure is the only practical solution. However, different water providers operating on the same grid can not work because while people may pay differing amounts for water of varying quality, when mixed in a pipe, every gets the same quality water in the end and you no longer got what you paid for. If you neighbor is poor and can only afford water with fecal matter in it, guess what, you are getting fecal matter too. If you have HDTV and your neighbor doesn't, the fact that his/her cable signal is passing along the same wire as yours doesn't not diminish the quality of either signal.

At the same time, the free-market is a fine solution when the item in question is not necessary for the basic survival of a human being! We can all survive without a telephone, internet, cable tv and even electricity. People did for thousands of years. People can not survive with access to clean drinking water. Hence, something like water, that must be of a high quality, must always be publicly owned and administered in order for the public to ensure its quality and access. It's not a monopoly if the "mono" in question is everyone.

As a teacher of economics, I find the the free-market to be the most misunderstood and widely misused idea I have ever come across. Like I said before, it is a fine solution when the item in question is not necessary for the basic survival of a human being. The result of not understanding such limits of the free-market will ultimately cause the disastrous application of it to situations like that in Bolivia and dozens of other nations. The free-market is a tool, and like any tool, it is not the best solution for every problem.
