Using Science to Explain Homeopathy ;)

Uhhh lady, there's black holes bigger than bowling balls... so how can all of the universe fit into... when only one will... but with...... what the.... ok i'm done. I managed 1.30 to 1.50, don't think i'm winning the pool.

Mysterious weather on the sun

Ashenkase says...

"our home star is as weird as it gets"

Not even close. There are phenomena out in the universe that make our sun look like a simple, plain jane, run of the mill speck of sand.

For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_star
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quasar
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergiant

"that defies the laws of physics"

Nothing about the sun defies physics. The only places in the known Universe that may defy physics is inside a Black Hole for that is where it is theorized that the law of physics starts to break down.

Neutron stars explained

dannym3141 says...

Degeneracy is really, really cool. It's all about squashing things into as tight a region of space as you can. It's an observable justification of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and the Pauli exclusion principle (the one that says you can accurately measure the position or the velocity of an object but not both and the one that says that two neutrons -in this case- can't both occupy the same very small region of space).

To be a neutron star, the remnant core after an unstable giant blows its outer layers away has to be more massive than 1.44 solar masses, but anything bigger than about 2.5 solar masses probably becomes a black hole. On the less massive end you get white dwarfs which are prevented from shrinking any more by electron degeneracy pressure - electrons won't let the star get any denser. But if you throw more mass on it, even electron degeneracy pressure can't resist the gravitational force and you get a neutron star, supported by neutron degeneracy - the neutrons won't let the star get any denser now. And then finally more and more mass and it becomes a black hole, which is where even the neutron degeneracy pressure can't sustain the gravitational force.

I mean, that's fucking cool - there is so much gravitational force that the electrons have to team up with the protons to become neutrons, because neutrons can get slightly closer together. And then if the neutrons aren't happy, you've got a singularity which is a fancy way of saying we don't know what the hell just happened but stay away from it if you like being in the part of the physical universe that kinda makes sense to us.

There's also speculation of a quark degeneracy state beyond neutron degeneracy.

To the kind, considerate, and generous individual that proffered this gracious boon, thank you, I am unworthy.

Sorry, however, for the lag in expressing my appreciation. It is good to be free from the black hole. Blacklisted, you know. Whew.

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

shagen454 says...

I have yet another story to add about this.

One of my better female pals got in contact with me about 2 months ago by standing outside of where I worked waiting for me to come out.

I walked out of the office and was surprised to see her but she was agitated. She had a CD in her hand that she could not figure out how to load on her computer and said that two men had assaulted her in a Safeway; but had the evidence on the CD's.

I let her know that I would absolutely try and figure this out and that the discs were safe with me, I wasn't going to misplace them, etc etc.

She had gone to the security of Safeway (a third party company inside Safeway) and asked for the tapes of the times but they gave her some sort of strange format - you had to install a really shitty program and then the evidence was just a small window on the screen.

I figured out how to export the videos high resolution & full screen.

Basically, what happened was she was at a Coinstar and totally looking very pretty but these dudes came up behind her and leveraged their stuff towards her and grabbed her ass, twice. Once coming in and leaving.

When they left and did the same thing, this strong woman who I know, flipped out. She ran out after them but a cop was already waiting for one of them.

They had both been stealing shit all day long and garnered the attention of the authorities and the cops were on to them. Probably, very high on drugs.

Later it was found out that one of the dudes raped a child and also ran over a person as a hit and run.

She helped prosecute them in court and had no idea that the black hole went as deep as it did when she pressed charges for basic harassment.

Yes, sorry a little overreacting. In my defense, this site does chomp off the annotations, and, for whatever reason, the YouTube links were not working when I first looked (I promise, though now I think I'm imagining things), so it was kind of a black hole for my video when I first saw it, I wasn't familiar with the site, and another site WAS ripping it off, which kinda put me in a bad mood.

Glad you liked the video, must've woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

Just for the record, the reason you couldn't post the URL is because you have only just joined videosift. It's an anti-spam measure.

Now, I'm guessing this is actually your blog, and possibly video too, since you just joined and you're using the same avatar and username as the blog writer. That's cool, I really like what you've done, and if you'd just asked me to link to your blog, I would have. There's no conspiracy here to stop you getting credit for your work, in fact, I posted it on here so that you would get more exposure.

Maybe in future don't get so defensive...

It made me wonder, 'then what's protecting us from the medium sized black hole between your ears'?!? Where do they find these people?
Yeah, a "small black hole" would suck in our entire universe....just wow...and I expect no one corrected her. ARRRRGH!

Bernie Sanders tears into Walmart for corporate welfare

chingalera says...

<< Well thank (G)god and quantum theory and the high-priestesses of non-linearity (Hail Eris) for assisting the few brave and hapless souls in the quest watcher-man, I'd imagined in the most heated of moments to be dealing with creatures that looked like humans who were in fact, mindless automaton designed to make my experience on Earth a living hell of sorts...That said, if everyone shopped at Walmart the few times a year I go in there and spend less than $20 bucks atta time, every one of their locations would be a black hole of unused square footage slated for demolition and re-acquisition. They'd make for some great multi-lane bowling alleys, skating rinks, or homeless shelters-
