Army using virtual games to recruit and teach about war

Psychologic says...

An idea I had was to humanize every individual that you kill in the game. That is, when you're about the kill "the enemy," you have to sit through a five minute biography of that individual, including their family history, the children s/he leaves behind, and the charity work he did (before you blew off his head with a M16).

I'm sure the guys shooting at our troops are deeply concerned about our family lives as well. Yea, the "video game" aspect of it does tend to trivialize things, but at the same time it is a little different when the person you are talking about IS trying to kill you.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this kinda stuff being used for marketing. I'm in the Army and we use stuff like this for training all the time, but making war seem like "fun" is a little misleading. I'd really have to take a run through this simulator before I could pass judgment on whether I think it is a good thing or a bad thing.

No surprise here.. I wonder if the game comes equipped with Virtual Brain Trauma and virtual amputations?

McCain Concedes Loss to Obama

I'm telling you, McCain is cool.
It's just the party and demographic that surrounds him that has no class.

I've read the biography of this gentleman-- I don't think with his history, I could ever regard the man as 'cool.' The fact alone that he voted against Martin Luthor King Jr. Day until after what, '87??? blows my mind. I can't think of single issue on which he hasn't changed his stance depending on which way the political wind is blowing. In the end his speech was lovely, but wholly political, and devoid of heart. Maybe he just wanted to save some face in the hapstance that something aweful should happen to President Obama.

I am so smart, I am so smart!

"Sometimes screw-ups turn out to be good. In an episode of The Simpsons, it was scripted that Homer would sing "I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-A-R-T". But when Dan read it, he screwed up and said "I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-R-T I mean, S-M-A-R-T". The editors liked the change so much that they kept it in and it is in the episode to this day. The line also appears in the video games The Simpsons: Hit and Run and The Simpsons: Road Rage."

McCain Supporters being Classy

conan says...

The last few weeks somehat shocked me. I found out that there are not just some really, really stupid people out there in the world but obviously there number is huge. All this "Barck HUSSEIN Obama" thing... There really are people who think that a middle name says something about one's believes or whatever. If that's so does having the same first name as a well known psychopath and mass murderer make you also one? What about all the people in Austria that go by the name "Hitler"? Folks are just so plain ignorant when they try to reduce stuff to easy-to-swallow bits and pieces. Why try and actually read political programs? Look up the biography of a candidate? No, that's all too much hassle. Just find some nice clichee and stop thinking for oneself. I would feeld ashamed of myself to go out on the streets and shout "Hussein Mohammed Obama". It would just show that i'm stupid for the most part of it, but also that i'm ignorant (Mohammed isn't the name of Obama), racist (because i project fear and hate into a name and / or a religion) and that i'm a willing tool for crazy spindoctors. Luckily the internet doesn't forget anything and there's a realistic chance that those people will be confronted with their stupididy again in their lifetime. Maybe then they'll see just how incredible closed-minded that was. I really feel sorry for them, their families and for their country for which they are so proud of. I don't think that's the america that was once so loved by all.

John McCain's Keating Five Problem In 97 Seconds

^ McCain says in his biography that he was guilty, that it was the worst mistake of his entire political career, and often credits the experience for his turn towards "reform".

It's also an early echo of our current economic crisis.

I'm not basing my view on his carefully-constructed biography, I'm basing my view on his (and the rest of his hand-picked administration's) continuing inability or refusal to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences.

Perhaps he does have a speciality or two, but this does prove his competence otherwise.

Maher, Garofalo, & Rushdie destroy Fund's defense of Palin

13043 says...

I know what the Bush Doctrine is. I knew exactly what "Charlie" was asking when he asked it.

Why? Because I'm a reader.

And because, as Rushdie said, it's the single most important policy shift in the last 100 years of US history.

500 years from now, when people have long forgotten who Sarah Palin was, they will still be writing about the Bush Doctrine. It will be in the first line in his biography.

I know these things. And I'm not running for the White House.

Aren't 8 years of cluelessness enough?

HI! I have fired assault rifles and handguns, probably more accurately than you, and oh yeah i can gut a rabbit, the heart and kidneys have high nutritional value.
So does that qualify me to call your behaviour in this thread dickish?

Sarah Palin's daughter pregnant!

choggie says...

what i s real, anyhow...?
\Quoting the first line from the first hit, on the first search.."palin husband" on Google, from some slanted, pathetically composed with a view to bassshin' a mother a five who lives in Alaska, an happens to be the pick for McCain's fast-track to whatever, and no-doubt an approved-by-the-strong female that allowed it to be published as her words, "In the prepared statement Monday, Sarah and Todd Palin said: "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."

Ms. Palin had told Mr. McCain's team about the pregnancy and her husband's old DUI during lengthy discussions about her background, aides said. "

And so and again and again and again, Ad infinitum, asshats that deal in spin and news, will do anything the power structure says to do, with the flaccid skills they have available to them, to get the job, whatever that is, done.....make you cast yer vote a certain way based upon visceral reactions to personal inclinations....In oyher words, dealing the folks who like McCain in the Jesus and Mary Traditional Family Values, etc.camp, a card form the bottom-dwelling recesses of the deck

Sarah Palin as VP? (Election Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

I think I can understand the logic that went into Palin.

She's a big hit with the Bill Kristol set, because she's young, attractive, well-spoken, has a great biography, she's not an old white man, and she's a hardline neoconservative ideologue.

She's a Karl Rove style pick with a twist -- she'll comfort the people who're devastated that Bush can't just stay President forever, plus they think she has a chance to drive a wedge into the (in their mind) deeply divided Democratic party over women's issues.

They also believe that Hillary won't come out and hit Palin with a chainsaw over issues, because they're absolutely convinced that Hillary wants Obama to lose.

So the bullet points they gain are:

  • Energize the "base" of evangelicals, and social conservatives
  • Get a press buzz to focus on this "Fresh new face", to combat Obama on that front.
  • Appeal to socially conservative women who want a woman in the White House
  • Be able to say "see, we're not a bunch of sexists and racists after all"

What they lose is:

  • The ability to hammer home Obama as not being experienced enough (Palin's resume is thinner than Obama's)
  • The ability to reinforce the importance of National Security (since Palin has 0 experience with that)

That has me a little concerned, because in my analysis that means that the McCain campaign is going to totally detach from issues that matter (like experience), and go into total smear-merchant mode.

They've already made the shift, since there's now a spate of ads talking about William Ayers running here in Ohio, joining the ads that just flat out lie about Obama's tax plan (saying he'll raise your taxes if you make more than $42,000, which isn't true).

I expect the RNC convention to spend the entire time driving home baseless smears about patriotism, muslim, Wright, Ayers, and maybe we'll get to hear about the guy who claimed he had gay sex with Obama from the mouths of "serious" people.

I also expect that most of the positive stuff will focus on Palin's biography, and McCain's record as a P.O.W., and only Lieberman will talk about the bipartisan stuff.

I don't know if it'll work, but that's my prediction as an armchair strategist.

FOX News: Colin Powell To Endorse Obama At Convention.

9058 says...

Yeah Powell was screwed into that position. A biography on him states that Wolfowitz hated Powell and never wanted him around Bush because he was always for diplomacy before force. The belief is that he always wanted Powell to be the fall guy because then there would be no one in the way. He was given info before going in front of the UN and told by his colleges that it was absolutely true. Why would he assume they were full of shit since at that time no one knew just how full of shit they were. Powell is the ONLY member of the Bush administration that i might believe the "plausible deniability" excuse from.
