This works on a number of beer bottles as well, as long as the knife strikes the lip as its running up the side. Giving a few taps on the bottle with the knife can build up the pressure too, if you can't get it to work.

As a cyclist I've been swerved at, had beer-bottles thrown at my head, been spit on, and been hospitalized twice by city of Vancouver busses whose drivers seem to forget that their vehicles are about 1/2 a block long.
