The Orb - Towers of Dub

Farhad2000 says...

I love the Orb, because their music formed the soundtrack to my life for a while, I used to wake up to little fluffy clouds... and take long treks to nowhere in particular like an assassin... and at night fall asleep as Spanish Castles in the sky formed over my bed.

The Orb are an English electronic music group known for popularising chill out music in the 1990s and spawning the genre of ambient house.

personally i think we should have all these posts on the sift.

Deano - you have a good point, perhaps we're misusing the term snuff. I don't want this to spin out of control, but I can only tell you what James and I were thinking, "way-back-then" when we put together the posting guidelines.

Our thoughts were that there are already so many sites that cater for the lurid, prurient human side that we all have. We wanted to make a zone that was free of porn and "Faces of Death" type content that you might see someplace like Somethingawful.com or stileproject.com or even Fark.com.

So maybe it's not "snuff" but we just don't want videos that show actual people dieing on the camera. IIRC, hostage beheading videos were showing up around the time that the Sift started, and it might have been a partial reaction to that. I'm glad we made that decision.

We were probably wrong in bending the rules for the Kennedy assasination, it is historically significant, but it also documents a real human being dieing in front of your eyes, which is something we have chosen to exclude from the Sift.

i am afraid it is gone. for the sanity of the sift. personally i think the JFK assasination piece is fine but i realise it would only attract more postings of Saddams execution.

think it can be resurected from the sift bins in the future?

LadyBug says...

honestly, i don't think this video has a place at the sift ...

but some food for thought because if there is a snuff rule it should be followed. although it's not always followed here (examples 1 & 2 spring to mind here). the hanging video is far less graphic than seeing jfk's skull blown to bits ... and how does one have more historical value than the other??

Samurai Quick Draw Challange - Who WiIl Win?

bamdrew says...

I knew a fellow who was skilled at kenjutsu and was training under a master of iaijutsu, or Iaido, which is pretty much the art of drawing the sword, like in this clip.

It was pretty interesting to watch him practice, because when I first met him he had just recieved permission from his old japanese master to use a real sword, and with a real sword comes elaborate rituals that must be maintained when practicing. So he'd begin each attempt by paying respect over the sword as it sat in front of him, then he'd slide it under his belt, then he'd adjust to the seated or standing position he wanted to practice, and wait, and slowly move his hands to the sword, then FWOOSH!, he'd pull it out and make a few cuts in the air, then slide it back in, and commence to praying over it again. He showed me how he'd taken a few chunks out of the top of his scabbard, because a large amount of the training is knowing exactly how long your sword is, and exactly when it is free so you can make cuts.

One last note about him, his favorite move was really impressive, where, from a seated and bowing position, he would step up while drawing his sword and cut once forward on the upswing, then turn and cut downwards behind where he had sat. He noted how his master was especially respected in Japan as being incredible at seated moves in Iaido, and this form came about due to situations where maybe you're visiting the enemy to sit and discuss peace proceedings, but an assasin behind you draws his sword while you're seated and bowing in respect. The practitioner could hear the sword draw and attack both people around him while drawing his own sword.

Once Upon a Time in the West - Opening Credits

sfjocko says...

I'm fairly sure part of this has been posted previously in videosift, but I cannot find it in the system. I'm also pretty sure that this clip is more complete than the previously posted clip, which was shorter by a few minutes. In this slow, intentionally drawn-out scene, a few minutes means a lot.
***
Addendum: reviewing the clips available in youtube, I find this, the clip that had been previously posted in videosift but I cannot find any more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZLb-FlNhSE
That clip is the continuation of the current clip I am posting, where Charles Bronson's character meets his would-be assasins, and they discuss whether the horses are too few or too many.
Together, one of the greatest opening scenes in any film ever.

Interesting reply, ren. Thanks, by-the-way.

I was somewhat surprised that you first say its inpossible to have an unhealthy degree of empathy, then rally for a withdrawl of all troops. I'm of the opinion that immediately pulling out would be inexcusibly selfish at this point. The country would surely fall closer to civil war, first faught primarily with fear and assasinations, then with retribution for retribution. The government as it is would become further unstable, and the rest of the educated class would desert the country; with no safety there are few doctors, few professors, few leaders (business, government, and otherwise) who would want to operate and live in such a state. The poor and injured would have marginal employment, little health care, little hope for a better future for their children, and be more accepting of whomever promises their area safety and some degree of freedom (warlord, dictatorship or otherwise). Anyhow, the mental and physical toll to the Iraqis would be pretty incredible, and it would be our fault, and our cross to bear for the generations lost to chaos.

We're in a mess, but everybody needs to keep a level head and look at this thing from multiple angles.

What Iraq needs now are leaders who are widely respected, divorced from religious politics and divorced from American influence. What US soldiers need are obtainable long and short-term goals, and for the Bush administration to stop making up their own rules. Captured Iraqis must be given a fair trial as soon as possible, one that falls into military, international, American or Iraqi jurisdiction... they are all in effect under NO jurisdiction right now, because thats where this administration wants them (can't break any laws if no laws apply to your prisoners). And what Americans and our allies need to do is have a very long, honest discussion with Iraqi officials, Iraqi military leaders, Iraqi religious leaders and prominent Iraqi citizens about what they think needs to happen. If the consensus is secure the infrastruction with a slow withdrawl of troops starting in 2007, then great. If its dress the American troops up in Mexican army fatigues, sounds good to me.

So, I'm of the opinion that people just need to listen to each other, identify problems and come to some conclusions. Then act. It sounds simple, but I'm a scientist, not a politician.
