You are aware that the research behind the lead gasoline correlation was based on statistics, right? Statistics like the ones available on the FBI website? There has already been tons of research on the correlation between violent crime and guns. This site has some interesting statistics: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp

The point I've been making (and that the statistics support) is that there is no clear correlation between violent crime and gun control. The states with the loosest gun control laws (Florida, Texas, Maine, Vermont, Alaska) do not have the highest violent crime rates (in fact, Maine and Vermont have some of the lowest) and the state (DC) with the highest crime rate (by far) has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Therefore, enacting more restrictive gun control laws is unlikely to have any meaningful impact on violent crime, as there are clearly many other, more significant factors involved. The last part we can at least agree on, yes?

Out of curiosity, what exactly is your position on the topic? Do you believe guns should be banned? Do you think a ban would actually prevent criminals from getting guns? Do you think banning guns will significantly reduce violent crime? I'm pretty sure I already know your answers but confirmation would be nice.

BTW, liberals (or "progressives", as they like to refer to themselves) are no more interested in facts than conservatives are. Both are only interested in the facts that support their agendas. Such is the nature of politics. If a liberal wants to ban guns, he/she will ignore any evidence that undermines that. If a conservative wants to abolish all gun laws, he/she will ignore any evidence that undermines that desire. Willful ignorance is inevitable when people have strong beliefs.

Nothing in the FBI's numbers for those decades would suggest that banning leaded gasoline would reduce violent crime. But because research wasn't suppressed, we have an extremely clear case for that now.

I don't get why you're having problems comprehending this...you yourself said it was a difficult question to answer. I have agreed, and pointed out over and over that you learn NOTHING by looking at the raw FBI numbers. Those tell you diddly shit about other factors. But you continue to ignore the fact that those numbers take no other factors into account and claim they prove something you want to find.

The only research into those other factors was killed by the gun lobby. In spite of your false equivalence, it was not, and has rarely if ever, been the progressives that kill research into contentious issues...progressives generally prefer to have some facts to base their approach on. Lobbying organizations care only about money..facts have no bearing on their stance, and they are more likely to bury them than display them.

Low Cost Solution To Landmine Clearance.

Drachen_Jager says...

@notarobot "If it costs 1200 Euros (on average) to clear one mine, releasing 24 of these things to detonate ONE mine is still cheaper than other option."

Your math is based on some flawed assumptions. These things might detonate some landmines, that's it, and that's all. Mine clearance is about making safe zones where people can walk again with relative assurance that it's clear of mines.

Apples and oranges, but your apples are rotten, because they simply don't provide much practical use. Maybe it's possible one of these things might save a limb or a life, but as I pointed out earlier, it's equally possible they could cost a limb or a life. Without a dedicated research project nobody will ever know for sure whether these things effectively reduce the number of landmine related injuries.

Also, regarding the cost of mine clearance (well below your 1,200 euro spitball) http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/banmines/units/unit1c.asp I'll give the full quote because there are other sobering statistics there.

"A landmine that brings a vendor $3 in revenue, costs the international community between $300 and $1,000 to clear. At a minimum, the 110 million landmines currently buried worldwide will cost approximately $33 billion for clearance alone. In 1994, roughly 100,000 landmines were cleared. However, in that same period 2 million more landmines were laid, leaving the international community with an annual “de-mining deficit” of some 1.9 million mines, adding another $1.4 billion to the cost of clearing the world's landmines."

By the way, one of the big reasons for the wide range in clearance costs is density of the minefield, it takes almost as much work to clear one square metre of space without mines at all as it does to clear one square metre of space with a mine in it, so these doohickys will do little to bring down the cost of clearance in that regard.

A Vote for Obama is a Vote for Romney - Literally

You Got Obama Phone?

airengr says...

To clarify this issue, a friend of me pointed me to a snopes.com article that explains that Obama didn't initiate the free cell phone idea. http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/cellphone.asp Similar information can be found in the last link on the webpage obamaphone.net. The problem that this video and other media clips illustrate, however, is that this woman and numerous others of her ilk (regardless of race) believe Barack Obama reached out and handed them a free cell phone. As such, she and others have pledged their unwavering allegiance to the man and will vote for him in November. And Obama has not bothered to step up and tell them he's not responsible for their being duped into casting a vote by living off the largess of taxpaying workers in this country. Oh yeah and don't miss her brilliant analysis of Romney's campaign!

They (Termeno/Tramin and Dro) were trying to get up to "Eccelenza" level (yes thats the "E" below the "D") and they appear to have both made it for this season. No idea what really happened to the protest although they seem to say it was upheld by the local authorities in the video. Regular season rematch October 14th.
