WTF Happened to Movie Posters?

Jinx says...

When fans complained about the Bioshock Infinite box art Irrational decided to post some alternates to be voted on. This one won http://irrationalgames.com/insider/poll-winner-announced/

I feel like there is easily the capacity to make great artwork, but in this case they opted not to make it the default cover art because they were afraid Joe public wouldn't "get it" or something. It's typical risk aversion. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the budgets for these movie posters were actually greater than it has been in the past. I'd wager that some great movie posters are produced that we never get to see.

WTF Happened to Movie Posters?

Magicpants says...

I don't think it has much to do with money, the studios could certainly afford to make great art for each of their movies. It comes down to what sells, cryptic artwork doesn't really tell you what's in a movie. You need to think of a poster as a 3 second commercial for your movie.

The movie certainly didn't ruin the comic and I think it's an impressive piece of work technically and visually. But there's just so many awesome little details in the book that the movie misses. The whole Fearful Symmetry mirrored artwork, for instance.

That said, I'll give the ultimate cut a look.

Oh man, that is way cool!

Yeah, the Watchmen movie is a point of contention with fans. But I'm of the mind that a rendition of any property doesn't ruin it. If I loved the original trilogy of Star Wars, for instance, then the new trilogy doesn't change that, you know?

I really liked the Watchmen movie because I never thought it would live up to the integrity of the original comic miniseries. But then after watching the Ultimate Cut, it's a fairly accurate cut. It's pretty great, actually. In my opinion, at least.

I'm having a release party on September 29 but I think I'll release it a couple of weeks earlier around the 15th or so. Just waiting for the artwork to get finished up and then it's off to the manufacturer! You'll know as soon as it's ready

Just briefly stopping by. I pulled up my stakes a long time ago.

Hope you've been well. Make sure to drop me a line when your CD drops. September, isn't it? Don't forget, or I'll get stabby.

Octopus Project - I Saw the Bright Shinies

oritteropo says...

Vimeo description:

Animated by Austin illustrator Divya Srinivasan, this animated video depicts three sleepy ghost kids following a heterochromic fox through a snowy twilight. When the group discovers an impromptu critter disco in a forest clearing, the spirits and strays dance in harmony until a cranky babushka bemoans the noise and breaks up the party. Thus, the spectral youths return to the astral plane... but not without a final farewell to their new found animal friends.

Divya Srinivasan has previously created animated videos for Spoon ("Everything Hits at Once"), They Might Be Giants, The Sundance Channel and Wonder Showzen, and worked on Richard Linklater's "Waking Life" feature film. Divya's illustration portfolio includes numerous pieces for the New Yorker magazine, as well as the album artwork for Sufjan Stevens' Illinois and This American Life's "Stories of Hope and Fear" collection.

"I Saw The Bright Shinies" is from The Octopus Project's album "Hello, Avalanche," released in 2007 on Peek-A-Boo Records. The "Bright Shinies" video appears on the "Golden Beds" enhanced CD EP released in 2009 on Peek-A-Boo Records.

I hope you're keeping up with your artwork. It's good stuff. Give the gwizzard my regards too. Take care.

PS: Jesus, there are a lot of new faces around here since I left. Damn kids!

Man, they don't give out drugs for anything!

Seriously though, I've only been to the doctor a few times here so I am no expert on the system. Sometimes it takes a while if it's not an emergency but that's a decent sacrifice considering I almost never went to the doctor in the states.

I don't have a lot going on either besides language classes and some other stuff.

Anyrate, I was just seeing what an old sifter is up to. (P.S. I like the photos you got there ^)

I'm good. Nothing exciting in my life right now. That's not always a bad thing.

And you? You still living in Danmark? How do you like socialized medicine? They've had Obamacare longer than Obama's been alive. How'd they pull that one off? Those fuckers are sneaky.

I can't even pretend to know what the intent was but for me I really like how the white rooms are lit up with color and the experience of walking through the room. I really think his work is an experience you can only get from interaction. >> ^legacy0100:

Ya I saw his artworks. Didn't really get it lol

I really just didn't get the point of making that movie. I fail to see what it added to an artwork that was perfectly fine in its original medium.

A truly visionary director, the likes of Terry Gilliam or Stanley Kubrick, might have revealed some new insight. Snyder just translated the pages onto screen and in a predictable manner at that, and the whole "graphic novel on screen" was already done by Rodriguez, so it wasn't even that technically impressive. The one part of the movie that worked was the title sequence

"Cicada" - (Australian Guy Tells A Horrific Childhood Story)

Sagemind says...

Question for all you movie people out there - WHY are there so many names at the end. This is a one shot of one guy talking. There couldn't possibly be an entire production crew behind this - Unless he is just an actor and this is just all fake.

If this is real, and this many people were needed, then this is a classic example of why it costs so much to make a movie in Hollywood. (Post Production Script? Key Artwork? Producer and ASS. Producer?)

Someone should let them know they could have made this with one person, an iPhone and a personal computer.
