Stupid. "It's an artillery shell." Are you kidding me? I can't believe these guys haven't had training on recognizing IEDs. Even dumb ol' sillyvilian me knew IEDs were often made with shell casings. Just a stupid brainfart that could have killed him and anybody close by. He done goofed, and he should have got his ass chewed. Maybe they don't get Discovery Channel there, or he hasn't seen "The Hurt Locker" yet.

That dumbass soldier should know that you don't go around messing with artillery shells when there's clear mention of IEDs in the title of the video!

I'm curious how often one finds artillery shells laying around in an area like this, that it's not immediately assumed a half-buried artillery shell is a possible IED. Commonly? It IS and has been a warzone for a long time.

That's what I thought at first, but he threw a shoe, which in that corner of the world is a sign of disdain I guess, then he pulls out the artillery.

Technically speaking, a cannon is a type of artillery as are mortars and howitzers. Artillery can also the division of an army that operates these weapons.

Granted, I've only ever seen 120mm HE live at Bovington, but those explosions do look awfully big and fiery for mortar rounds. Rocket artillery, perhaps?

in Plain words - Artillery. I've done that mounting during my service... It's bloody scary being from the inside of that machine.

Ah - in the video clip above there is a shot of the cannon lying on its side. It appears to be the cannon that Tory built himself that they used for the "Ball and Chain Prison Escape" episode. It also appears to be mounted on a pair of old timey wagon wheels via some sort of shop-built rig. If there was any sort of anchoring system in place then I couldn't see it in the vid.

There's a reason why old style field artillery on wheels had that big wooden splay in the back. It provided an anchor point that prevented the canon from bucking up when fired. Looks like the Build Team took out thier home made cannon, had no anchoring system, and let fly with it. They used more powder than they did in that particular device in the past, and chaos ensued.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that JD Nelson (who was on the site) didn't say something. He usually seems to be pretty savvy about explosives, and should have observed that the cannon needed some means of fixing in place. Doesn't seem like thier other explosive expert (Frank Doyle) was there, or it may have gone better. I also bet if Jamie or Adam had been around that this wouldnt' have happened. They have experience with firing real cannons from the Pirate episodes, and they probably would have noticed a problem.
