Why Haven't We Found Alien Life - PBS Space Time

MilkmanDan says...

Argh. I hate it when people say that it "required" a very specialized set of conditions for life to arise on Earth. Instead, I would argue that life on Earth arose in a set of specialized conditions and is therefore accustomed to those conditions.

Life similar to what we have seen on Earth might "require" those conditions, but why should we assume that those conditions are required for life in general? We have discovered life here on Earth that falls outside of the hospitable conditions that we have previously thought of as being "required" for life. For example, consider extremeophiles like the organisms that live around deep ocean vents, and can survive and thrive in water well over the boiling point, with no sunlight, etc.

There is a limited range of conditions present in Earth environments; a maximum and minimum temperature likely to be encountered on Earth, varying amounts of light or other sources of energy, etc., and we can find life adapted to wildly varying positions within that range. Why do we continue to assume that Earth-like conditions are some sort of magic combination for life? For life "as we know it", ...maybe. But I figure there is a probably a lot of stuff out there that we would recognize as alive, but which is adapted to very different conditions than anything considered hospitable to any life on Earth.

I thought that at first as well because he catches it too low to be an accident... but it appears to me that the cube is solved when it is in the air before he catches it. Perhaps he performs some sort of switch behind his back...but if anything that makes the execution all the more impressive. Perhaps he partially solves the cube behind his back and finishes it after the catch? argh I DONT KNOW its fucking buttery.

Maybe he is actually magic.

for the behind the back one, it seems like he's just picking up a new cube when his hand goes under the table after the catch.

Cop Smashes Cell Phone For Recording Him

To add to what arghness has said, regardless of the job if one of my employees did this did this to anyone at work at work I'd sure as hell fire them.

This guy's job is to make life and death decisions with that weapon he's got. If he can be riled to the extent he obviously was by some random woman on the sidewalk then he needs to be taken out of that situation.

As for all the 'one bad apple' claims, I've seen plenty of videos of these one bad apples, but I've never seen a single one where any of the other, apparently 'good' cops steps in to stop the bad one. If it's just the guy doing the smashing who's the bad one and every other cop there is a good guy, why does the bad guy feel so comfortable doing what he did? Why do the other cops cheer in support?

If it's a few bad cops then all of these cases would be acted upon and prosecuted. The fact that they aren't shows that all the other guys are implicit in the act. They allow it to continue. There are clearly enough bad apples that they're running the show and the good apples don't get the support they need if/when they show their colours.

If my job was to pick up litter and instead I dropped litter everywhere while on the job, I'd expect to be fired.

If my job was to protect the public and stop crimes and instead I attacked the public and committed crimes, I'd expect to be fired.

Comparing it to someone else with another job that broke a phone is incorrect. If I broke the phone of one of the people I was doing work for, then yes, I would totally expect to lose my job. If I broke a random persons phone in my spare time, then I would just expect to face normal charges like anyone else.
