Hmmmm. Two Academy Awards, six Grammys, three Emmys, four Annies, and numerous other accolades points that dipshit finger back to it's heliocentric origin .......ⓂⓤⓢⓗⓡⓞⓞⓜⓁⒶⓃⒹ

Hah! But no, seriously.
@<a rel="nofollow" href="http://videosift.com/member/lantern53" title="member since August 6th, 2010" class="profilelink">lantern53 knows.. that depriving servers of a living wage and forcing them to bust their asses for 5% gratuity on a $130 check.. you know, builds character.
Struggling in quasi-poverty for years of your life is what the American Dream is all about! duh.
That's why Mitt Romney is such a great American and needs to be President.
He knows what it's like.. to force people to struggle. For their own good.
p.s. - Everyone knows that raising the minimum wage is just another Socialist/Marxist scheme by Obama to disenfranchise the Job Creators in this country.

While I completely agree that people should be paid a living wage, I don't really have a problem with tipping. People should bust their asses in their job, especially if your job is customer facing. Customer service in the USA is so much better than almost anywhere else I've been, (it's particularly bad in NZ)

Just a meaningless anecdote (just find it funny that you mention it):

I went to Sydney once (15 years ago) and the very first day, I went to a place called the Juba Cafe. My friend and I were surprised to find porridge on the menu, because all I knew of porridge was from Oliver Twist or Little Orphan Annie. Our server, who's name was Anna, was really surprised to hear it, so she bought us porridge to convince us it was good. It was. Then, after we ate (before we tipped her) she invited us over to her apartment for some wine that night. When we got there, she had invited all her friends over to meet "her new Americans." They gave us wine, we talked for a long time about NZ (where she was from) and they rolled me the first "baseball bat" that I ever smoked, with the the little cardboard filter in it and everything. They also introduced me to Aphex Twin (the "Richard D. James Album") and we bonded over Ween, which I was surprised to hear they knew all about, even in 97'. So, after we were completely blitzed, Anna and her friends took us out to dinner, where we ate and drank and talked for hours and didn't pay a dime while these guys all treated us to a great first night in their city. I'm not even sure how we got home, but they sure didn't let anything bad happen to us.

The reason I mention it, is that I would say it was, easily, the best service I've ever had in my entire life, anywhere. We had to leave town the next day and I never saw or spoke to any of those guys again. I really wish I'd kept in contact with them because I owe them so much more than a night out. I still roll a fat bat and pop in the Aphex Twin on a pretty regular basis.

Girl Born with No Hands Wins National Penmanship Contest

kceaton1 says...

Strange, I wonder why I literally never heard or saw any of this when I was a kid. I had no idea back then that there were penmanship awards!

Anyway, when I looked it up it looked like it happened from grenade 1-8, at least in the United States. As to the girl in the video she is amazing; there are some Google images of her with what she wrote, but all the ones I found were so blurry you couldn't make anything out (or I would've posted/linked it). It also looked like at least one other kid (a boy) without hands had won before too!

I was, and I still am extremely good at penmanship. It makes me wonder why I never was involved in it. I'm actually a fairly good artist and I won awards as a kid, it's literally my artistry that gives me my great penmanship, as they walk hand-in-hand!

Although, I'll be the first to admit that I can't do Caligraphy or Spencerian types of writing at all--perhaps Caligraphy if I spent time on it, but that won't happen. My manuscript has literally been compared to, "...a printed copy!", so I was proud of my artistry when I used it the most. I could easily draw a realistic human hand, for an example. Enough of my glory hogging!

That girl is amazing, I REALLY wanted to see the range of expression she was able to commit to paper without two hands. She won so it must look amazing for a girl of her age, which makes me want to see it EVEN more! Damn them! How can you not show THAT are you an idiot journalist!?

If someone finds a gallery link or another video make sure to throw it up in here. I'm going to see if I can find a gallery, if I do I'll edit and tag it on to the end...

Edit-As you can see it was far more than one page for the first grader it was a packet, this is as close up basically as you can get to that image, so here it is (oh well, you can't see the thumb, but it goes to the picture correctly--I did flip the picture so you could read it far easier, plus a few other picture tricks, like making it bigger, sharper,etc...):

George Carlin on Child Worship

Picturing you as a referee scares me. But that probably has something to do with the fact that when I picture you refereeing, I'm still picturing you as Annie holding a gun.

As a referee of child sports, I get to see the delusional thinking of parents about their children constantly.
I find it funny when the rich white kids get scored on 8 times by the poor scrawny mexican kids.

What is Epigenetics?

ghark says...

>> ^jonny:

Apparently, just the opposite is true, but your basic point is correct. The physical environments of the womb and early childhood have a huge impact on DNA expression through epigenetics.
>> ^ghark:
One example is when people make lifestyle decisions that lead to obesity - this physical transformation results in altered epigenetic tags, some of which will be passed on to their children. The children are paying the price for their parents mistakes in the form of increased fat accumulation which often leads to diabetes, obesity and other problems.

While there is evidence that undernutrition can lead to obesity in offspring (if that's what you meant), the research also seems to show that the same is true for other factors, such as the mother being obese e.g.
http://www.nature.com/ijo/journal/v33/n7/abs/ijo200976a.html
and
http://www.nature.com/oby/journal/v16/n3s/full/oby2008518a.html

That first research article found that the chance of a girl becoming obese was 10 times higher when the mother was obese, and 6 times higher for a boy when the father was obese. This wasn't true for opposite sex (e.g. mother-son) so that indicates that it's epigenetic rather than genetic causes. The second article suggests that in addition to epigenetics other factors are also involved such as abnormal neural development in the womb because of abnormal energy intake by the mother. Either way, the field of epigenetics is bloody fascinating and is going to be the source of some very major breakthroughs in the future.

I watched the vid you posted, there's some excellent science there so thanks for that link.
