New Gold Star Ability: Tag Editing (Sift Talk Post)

joedirt says...

You mean can I post comments? Yes. Spell check even works, favoriting works. What else is 2.0 Sorry, favoriting appears to be a link and reload, not AJAX.
I've tried FF 1.5.0.7 and 2.0beta1 --> is broked
IE works good. I'm seeing the new AJAX stuff now. Must be my firefox profile.

(More feedback, in IE, if the window is too small, the text goes to white?? ie. you can highlight it and read it, but otherwise it is white on white)

[edit] OK, I figured it out. I have HTTP Referrer turned off. Why anyone would go around advertising where they came from is senseless to me. You give up too much info with Referrer on. Like your bank, your email account info, what search engine you use, etc.

So it is JavaScript AND Referrer enabled.

I wish you could do away with that. I think the javascript is making sure it came from the last VS page??

The reason you don't see the edit link in the html is that it is added when the page finishes loading by javascript. Do you have javascript enabled? Do the other Ajax features work for you (e.g., posting comments and adding/removing favorites)?

"Who voted for this post" and "Who favorited this post" sorting. (Sift Talk Post)

benjee says...

How about an AJAX drop-down (in page) for all the votes? Like:

-> Who Voted For This Post: (4 Users)

(clicking the arrow - above left - 'unfolds' the frame to reveal all the users)

| Who Voted For This Post: (sort: Chronologically / Alphabetically)
V
User 1 - User 2 - User 3 - User 4

Then each user can set their profile preferences to display the full 'expanded' lists of votes or the 'contracted' number of votes by default (and what ordering system to sort the full list, IE Chronologically / Alphabetically with links to re-order it in the frame). Just a suggestion of how I envisage the tidying of this interface element...

I was once in a taxi like that. Except it was as Crown Vic.

edit: Oh snap! While writing this comment the Ajax function failed AND my interface reverted to the "old" youtube. Weird!

I just wrote an Ajax-based commenting system around your current commenting code. Take a look at it here: http://www.rommelsantor.com/videosift/comment.php

Obviously, comments are not updated in any type of database, but it is pretty much plug-and-play ready. You will just need about one or two minor code changes to story.php and to modify my source files to work with your existing system. If you're at all interested in this, just let me know.

I'm actually writing an AJAX-based commenting system for the website of the company I work for. Personally, I think that unless you wanted to drastically change the interface for submitting or editing comments in the new interface, you could just roll your own without incurring too much hassle.

In terms of frameworks and other related AJAX goodness, I would draw your attention to the:

openrico framework (http://www.openrico.org)
aptana IDE (http://www.aptana.org and http://www.aptana.tv)
AJAX patterns wiki (http://www.ajaxpatterns.org)
totally awesome FCKeditor (http://www.fckeditor.net)

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Isn't it just called a gold pan SG? or is it a seive or something?

HamFist - thanks for the offer of help. One thing that we would really like to include with the new design is ajax commenting so we can leave comments without interrupting the videos. If you know of any good libraries for this, that would be appreciated. We tried adapting the WordPress one, but didn't go too well.

ooh, the page layout is definitely something I would call "fancy-pants".

While I have almost no talent in terms of creating logos, I heartily volunteer for any PHP/Apache or AJAX help you may need.

"View Comments" Revamp (Sift Talk Post)

"View Comments" Revamp (Sift Talk Post)

HAMFIST says...

Now that users can edit comments from both the video and the view comment views, would it make more sense to return the user to the page from which he clicked the "Edit this comment" link rather than to the comment thread as currently implemented?

Edit: Maybe the ideal solution is to make comment editing an AJAX behavior? ie:

1. User clicks "Edit this comment",
2. The relevant textual value of the comment div (identified by id attribute wholecomment[some integer]) becomes the value of a text field along with a 'submit comment' button,
3. User makes changes to the comment and clicks submit,
4. Upon clicking submit, the new comment value is POST'd to videosift asynchronously and the user is free to continue reviewing recent comments.
