Obama shootin hoops and talkin smack

reiwan says...

You infer an issue with it based off of some of your replies to people who dont have an issue with it. When you say something like, 'you like him, i dont have an issue with this video, but you're a douchebag' people will assume you are 'gunning for him' as you put it.

The point is, is this back and forth ping pong juvenile name calling, finger pointing and see-you-at-the-flagpole-after-school nonsense is about as pointless. This isn't a proverbial kool-aid drinking video. Everyone needs to just chill out and discontinue escalating this pointless 'argument' if you even want to give it that much esteem. ^blankfist:

@<a rel="nofollow" href="http://videosift.com/member/reiwan" title="member since October 16th, 2008" class="profilelink">reiwan. Would you mind pointing out in my comments where I made this into a conspiracy? Also would you mind pointing out where I said what Obama was doing was wrong in the least? All I said first was that this appeared to be staged and then I asked if anyone had any idea why? Later I deduced this must have something to do with his wife's Let's Move campaign.
Would you now explain why that's such a bad thing? I understand you like Obama. That's all great and good, but it's petty to try and brow beat others into acceptance. The common ground here, I think, is that I don't care that it's staged, and I've said that multiple times, but somehow people think I'm gunning for Obama with every comment.

Happy 4th Siftiversary! (Sift Talk Post)

James Roe says...

>> ^arvana:
Major congrats to Dag, Lucky and all of us for being so awesome!
And where is James Roe???  Somebody grab that guy and tell him we still love him.

Awwww..... shucks, I miss the sift, but after school I had to concentrate on "making money." I am still into web development and actually check in on the sift pretty regularly, but I don't find myself with anywhere near the leisure time I once had.

Beyond that Lucky is a Grade A developer, my skills would no doubt be getting in his way. That said it's incredible to see this site 4 years on, so much has changed but the commitment to quality, and sense of community have remained.

Also choggie's video is awesome!

Who wants chowdah? (Kids Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

I was terrible at sports as a kid. I especially sucked at throwing things. At my school, there was one day a year a sports event, where every kid went from post to post and tried to do their best at different activities. If you did well enough on it all, you got a diploma. The demands weren't very high, so I managed nearly all of them, even throwing a small ball. But the one thing I couldn't manage was throwing a big ball. I couldn't figure out how you were supposed to hold this unwieldy object to get it as far as possible. I tried and tried, but never got it past the required line. Dejected I went home without a diploma.

But the next day after school, our teacher took those of us without a diploma down to the sports field and gave us another chance at reaching the goals. Without the rest of the school there to watch, and with much encouragement from the teacher, I finally managed to throw the ball just over the required line, and I got the diploma. I was very proud of my achievement, which was purely a personal victory.

Police Handles Skateboarder Situation

joe2 says...

of course it's not illegal to skateboard in san francisco. some public schools even have after-school skateboarding clubs. there are skate parks and public skating events in the park.

he's just another typical fascist cop who likes showing off how powerful he is. the real insight into his personality is that he got all riled up and threatened to break someone's arm because they said he's acting like a dick. if he really wasn't acting like a dick it wouldn't have gotten him so angry. he was feeling guilty because he knew what he was doing was wrong and that's why he reacted that way. like i said, typical cop.

I think this has been a fully fledged character assassination attempt and I am disgusted by it. I am not afraid of what you'll think of me, because the truth is on my side.

3. You grabbed InflateableVagina's ass and boobs while staying with Bea, and generally freaked everyone out.
No and yes. I didn't grab her ass, I think I smacked it. The boob thing was just an immature prank that turned out to be way out of line. I acknowledged that above, and I have apologized to ivy about that. I can't say that I generally freaked everyone out, but I suppose I could have freaked the three out that were there, bea, ivy and their friend rick. The kids were long gone to be by that time, and they certainly liked me both.

I sort of scrolled backwards through the whole conversation, and I wanted to stay out of it, but this stuck out in my mind. I recall hearing about university girls (me obv. not being in their 'group') talking about how many of them were abused, often by those closest to them. Few reported it because of the situations they were in and all the other excuses that come up (not the least of which being the challenges they would face in the legal system).

With that in mind, do you realize that what you just described in the quoted text is sexual assault?

Perhaps there's some sort of context we're missing, but going into that would be idle speculation and I don't want to dwell on this any longer than necessary, other than to recognize what has happened here.

You are incredibly lucky that charges weren't pressed against you; you should be grateful that you were either given the benefit of the doubt over what happened (that reference to context which I alluded to), or perhaps shock delayed a more forceful response to what happened.

It's good that you apologized, but my casual observation of this entire conversation - not to mention the first quoted paragraph - makes me question whether you understood the gravity of what went on. And that's the point of this post, a cliched but very real 'after-school special with a important message' to put out there.

Thank you for at least bringing this to light. If, as I hope, things aren't as bad as I made them sound here, someone else will at least read this and realize that if they're in a worse situation they have rights and shouldn't be mistreated by anyone.

American Commercial Misrepresents Canadian Healthcare

detheter says...

... The video is false.

Alberta Budget 2008 Speech

Calling health care the number one priority for Albertans, she's eliminated health care premiums as of next January 1. The government has also set aside $145 million to attract and retain doctors, and other health care professionals. Health care spending takes up one-third of the provincial budget.

Evans announced $800 million set aside for the Water for Life strategy, $600 million to combat climate change, and $55 million to defeat the pine beetle.

In an appeal to families, Alberta will create 14,000 new care spaces and give tax breaks to those who care for elderly parents at home. After school care will also receive more financing.

Calgary’s mayor Dave Bronconnier got some of what he hoped; the province guaranteed 41 more police officers for Calgary, and more Crown prosecutors.

In all, the province of Alberta will spend $37 billion dollars next budget year, and save $279 million for the Heritage Fund.

The Stelmach governtment is anticippating it will take in more than 38.6-billion dollars this year and spend 37-billion dollars.

That's nearly 10 per cent more than last year.

Right now the surplus is estimated to be 1.6-billion dollars.

The biggest reason for the increase in spending is the health system which will get nearly 10 per cent more money. The Calgary Health Region's budget goes up nearly 200-million dollars.

The 2008 Alberta budget was based on increased oil royalty revenues of $1.8 billion yearly, and a $78 per barrel oil price.

Budget Critics Eye Surplus

Alberta's opposition parties are offering some rare words of praise for the new provincial budget, but others are more critical.

Liberal Leader Kevin Taft says he's delighted to see Premier Ed Stelmach's Tory government eliminate health-care premiums in the new year, although Taft claims this was a Liberal idea.

N-D-P Leader Brian Mason agrees, but he has some problems with the government's modest surplus projection of $1.6 billion.

Mason says if oil remains around the current price, the surplus could end up being five billion dollars higher.

Scott Hennig, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says a record 37 billion dollars in spending-12 per cent more than last year-is a recipe for disaster if revenues don't keep pace.

Lloyd Bertschi, president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, says communities will be happy with increased funding and more cash for affordable housing.

But he has concerns about whether the province will continue to pay the cost of 300 new police officers after a three-year hiring program ends.

Today's budget also includes billions to address Alberta's rapid growth-money for hospitals, schools, roads, crime reduction and efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Robotech > G.I. Joe

videosiftbannedme says...

I picked up the Protoculture box set a few years back as I used to love watching Robotech after school while growing up. I made it through the Macross saga but just couldn't get into the Zentradi (sp?) section. I need to do that as I remember the Invid section being really cool. One of these days.

Oh, and I never realized it when I watched through it while I was younger, but did Mimmei ever do anything but whine and sing that damn song over and over?

Of course M*A*S*H was about Vietnam, they just couldn't be that overt about it.

MASH was the first TV show that I watched at my young age that made me laugh and think. It reinforced the ideals of loyalty and honesty that I was raised with. I used to watch it every day after school on re-runs. I am pretty much a huge M*A*S*H nerd.

Racist Black Stereotypes From The Not Too Distant Past

kronosposeidon says...

^You said it, bro. At the risk of Godwinizing this thread, the Nazis had many, MANY highly educated people in their ranks. Racism comes in all different shapes and sizes.

I still remember seeing a lot of racist cartoons on TV after school when I was a kid. Shit, when I was a kid there were still Sambos's restaurants around. Welcome to Geezerville, kids.

Rush YYZ - Played by a 13 Year Old Girl Drummer!

alien_concept says...

^Hmm, a lot of asian families do put much importance on putting their children through extra curricular activities and they often have very little time for fun and recreation. It's a culture thing, it's why China is going to take over as the superpower

The only reason i'm saying this is because two of my friends are TEFL teachers, and they teach privately after school too. And they have both commented on the fact, over the years most of the young asian kids they are teaching go from one lesson to the next until bedtime. Sometimes they love it, sometimes they despise it, all depending on their personalities I guess

Nice catch, blanco nino. Too bad your ass got saaaacked!
