A Long Chris Hedges Interview On Our Failing Political Systm

Dystopianfuturetoday:
I'm not looking to debate anything here, I'm just curious as to your reasoning for considering Hitchens as an (at least) one time neo-con. What information led you to this opinion? As it seems distinctly opposed to what I've read in his memoirs and other writings.

ill answer for ya @Barber
hitchens was all for the iraq war and went even as far as to say waterboarding was not only NOT torture but necessary.
in his defense he did step down from both those positions.it should also be noted that hitchens actually allowed himself to be waterboarded and immediately (and i do mean immediately) changed his position that waterboarding was most certainly torture.which to me was a tribute to this mans intelligence.a true believer would never change his ideology but the intelligent person, when confronted with incontrovertible evidence, will change.

one final note @Enzoblue
neo-conservatism was anything BUT conservative.the neo-conservative philosophy began in the 1940's by leon strauss from the university of chicago.the basic premise is to use america's military might to secure american interests globally.this small fringe group of intellectuals had very little influence until the late 70's when they co-opted the christian right for their cause.

and so began the conflation of the christian right and american nationalism in the form of the republican party.
oh the delicious irony.

so when you say "old school neoconservative" what you are really referring to is the time the neo-cons had minimal influence (still there though) rumsfeld and cheney being big players during the reagan administration.which of course was made possible by the christian rights entering the political sphere (up till then most churches stayed out of politics).these same players brought in their fellow neo-cons during the bush administration and that administration read like a who's-who of prominent neocons:rumsfeld, cheny, pearl, wolfowitz, amratige, addington, woo.the list is massive.
so it wasnt so much about a change in philosophy but rather this fringe group (catapulted by the naive christian right) as having come into their own in terms of power and influence.

and all i have to say to that merry bunch of fucks is: THANKS DICKHEADS.

A Long Chris Hedges Interview On Our Failing Political Systm

Enzoblue says...

@dystopianfuturetoday I respect this guy too, he's definitely a heavyweight in the field, that's why this threw me back so much. I would argue that Harris and Hitchens were merely attacking the faith of the Muslims as much as they attack the faith at home. Faith being so ingrained in the Muslim community I can see how this would be racist in a sense, it almost has to be. To say they are religious illiterates though... that smacks of saying they're illiterate only because they refuse to drink the kool-aid.
As far as Hitchens being a neocon, if he is an old school neocon a la Wolfowitz, I could kinda see why though I still don't like it. Since then the neocon doctrine was highjacked by the Bush administration and now is far less palatable obviously.

Edit: I also believe that no one of Hedges intellect can defend religion without 'vehement dishonesty'.

And meanwhile you lament the loss of monsters like Saddam, Gaddafi and Assad. Well done.

Rand Paul: Sarah Palin's Choice for KY-Sen

dystopianfuturetoday says...

^I don't see Sarah Palin ever getting nominated or elected at the top of the ticket. The Republican party is too misogynist for that to happen.

I know its bad, but for once that is a good thing.

I get the feeling that Republican presidents don't have much say in actual governance, they're just colorful figureheads. Ronald the wise Grandpa, George the born again Cowboy, John the centrist Maverick, Sarah the hot soccer mom and Mitt the crazy ass Mormon are characters that different sets of people can identify with. It's the Cheneys, Rumsfelds and Wolfowitzes who pull the strings, regardless of who's in the driver's seat.

Pentagon Investigation Evidence Contradicts Official Story

bmacs27 says...

I didn't say I believe it. I said I would entertain it. There is a major difference.

If you honestly believe that Dick Cheney, as vice-president, was completely innocent of all wrong doing, I can't have a conversation with you.

The man's actions for the last eight years need to be carefully scrutinized. He ought to be investigated for all sorts of things. No, I don't think you could ever pin something like "he knew about flight 77 in advance" on him. I think you could get him for having assassination squads (i.e. Blackwater/Xe services), I think you can get him for authorizing illegal torture, I think you can get him for lying to the american people about justification for war (and the manufacturing of evidence to support his case), I think you might even be able to get him for profiteering if you look closely enough.

The man is a criminal, and has been since he was riding Tricky's Dick. This is, of course, not to mention the other people I think should be investigated carefully, i.e. Richard Perle, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and of course the baby Bush.

The real danger of conspiracy theories is the bias their prevalence puts against skepticism of official stories. Fear of association with crazies prevents the rational questioning of our public servants' activities. Therein lies the real danger.

The Century of Deceit - Dedicated to the lives lost on 9/11

EndAll says...

Why? To go to war.

To prepare the ground for the PNAC-like ideas that were circulating in the HardRight, various wealthy individuals and corporations helped set up far-right think-tanks, and bought up various media outlets -- newspapers, magazines, TV networks, radio talk shows, cable channels, etc. -- in support of that day when all the political tumblers would click into place and the PNAC cabal and their supporters could assume control.

This happened with the Supreme Court's selection of George W. Bush in 2000. The "outsiders" from PNAC were now powerful "insiders," placed in important positions from which they could exert maximum pressure on U.S. policy: Cheney is Vice President, Rumsfeld is Defense Secretary, Wolfowitz is Deputy Defense Secretary, I. Lewis Libby is Cheney's Chief of Staff, Elliot Abrams is in charge of Middle East policy at the National Security Council, Dov Zakheim is comptroller for the Defense Department, John Bolton is Undersecretary of State, Richard Perle is chair of the Defense Policy advisory board at the Pentagon, former CIA director James Woolsey is on that panel as well, etc. etc. (PNAC's chairman, Bill Kristol, is the editor of The Weekly Standard.) In short, PNAC had a lock on military policy-creation in the Bush Administration.

But, in order to unleash their foreign/military campaigns without taking all sorts of flak from the traditional wing of the conservative GOP -- which was more isolationist, more opposed to expanding the role of the federal government, more opposed to military adventurism abroad -- they needed a context that would permit them free rein. The events of 9/11 rode to their rescue. (In one of their major reports, written in 2000, they noted that "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor.")

Waterboarding IS Torture -- Amnesty International

charliem says...

Its pretty easy to understand dag, when you realise how entrenched their minds are with the "us vs. them" mentality visa vi political party.

If they admitted it was torture, their elected leaders of the country, that also got the wars going to begin with, are international war criminals, and must be bought to justice.

To these guys political teams are just as powerfully entrenched in their mindset, as sports teams are to the fans that go to the games dressed up as the mascot and painted the teams colors.

Fanatics, its all they are. Plain and simple.

To admit that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, Rove etc. signed off on acts of torture, would be tantamount to them suddenly saying their entire team is a sham. Wont happen anytime soon without a serious wake up call.

Its a damn shame that you have powerful media talking-heads with that much of a vested interest in any political party, im just glad that John Stewart has the temerity to call Obama out on his bullshit as well (Re: gitmo closing, but keeping the afghan air-base prisons open, with the exact same MO as gitmo, among others).

how do i do an emoticon of a dude rolling his eyes and his middle finger raised?

at least tell me you know who shinseki is. better yet, don't. just read this. then, if you're an american, slap yourself for not knowing. just once, but kinda' hard. ok, now smile again, cuz' the only reason i finally used this blog again was just to point out 2 things to smile about, that no one else had mentioned so i thought some of you might've missed it. whereas we all know about your tiny penis already, blankfist. and the shinseki thing is important because it means the guy who was right, about how many troops we'd need to occupy iraq, will be in regular contact with the president, without having to replace the SecDef. and btw, i don't think rumsfeld and wolfowitz were incompetent in assessing ground troop necessity. i believe they knew shinseki's estimate was more accurate, but the fascist pricks were already planning on privatizing half of it, hence my mentioning item 1 as well. ps. thanks for reading my blog, and your mother is ernest borgnine.

When Obama and the States raise taxes on an ailing economy and worsen it, he'll get his ass kicked in the 2010 elections and the stables of Congress can finally be swept clean.

You mother fucking asshole. What the fuck do you think is happening to us right now? Who the fuck did that? Who voted for the people who did it? You did. Twice.

You are a god damned disgrace. You are a fucking bane on this country. You are a god damned disease. We will never be rid of you. You are a cancer unto us all.

Where did the "ailing economy" come from you fuck-stick? It was from you and your cock-sucking piece of shit jungle-warfare butthole rip-off artists who saw a chance to fuck our country out of billions and took us all for everything they could.

I.E. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Paulson et al.

Look what you have done to us you mother fucking meat head.

Jon Stewart interviews Bill Kristol

Powell Eviscerates McCain's Negative Smear Campaign

rougy says...

>> ^Payback:
Anybody know if there's anything stopping Obama from hiring Powell for SecState again?

Nothing that I know of.

Powell's an obviously intelligent and capable man, but he is also a careerist, and he picked the wrong horse with the Bush team. But I can forgive and forget if he takes a proactive stance against their policies and tries to set things right.

What I want to see is an FBI investigation launched against the neocons (Bush, Cheney, Feith, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc.) regarding 9/11 and the lies that lead to the invasion of Iraq.
