Acts of vandalism that made the world a funnier place

artician says...

I used to use black masking tape to decorate ped-xing signs around San Jose and and LA with walking sticks, top-hats and other accessories. That was 10+ years ago, but always disappointed that I don't see some in these compilation vids.

Making A Copperhead Walking Cane

poolcleaner says...

It's a walking stick. What features cause one to suspect it wouldn't be capable of fulfilling the simple use of a walking stick? Usually one simply finds a stick whilst walking and it serves well its duty. I don't see how carving a snake into a stick makes it less walking stickable.

Undeniably skilled, though one suspects not that great as an actual cane.

Russell Brand debates Nigel Farage on immigration

It turns out the big guy with the walking stick wasn't just some random guy, he is the brother of a UKIP MEP. I knew there was something fishy about him when I first saw it.

Why LEGO is the BEST Company in the World

probie says...

When I was 10 years old, I played with Star Wars figures. At some point, I lost two of the guns for two of the characters. So I wrote Kenner, the maker of the the Star Wars figures at the time, wondering if there was some way I could get just those two guns.

A few weeks later, I received a padded envelope in the mail. Someone at Kenner had received my letter, gone down to the supply area and hand scooped parts and accessories from the line. Not only did I get the two guns I was missing, but at least 8-10 dupes, 1-2 copies of every other type of gun, replacement plastic capes for Darth Vader, Obi Wan, Bespin Leia, the newer cloth capes, Yoda's plastic snake and walking stick, in-arm lightsabers, hand grip lightsabers, you name it, it was in that padded envelope - including stuff for figures I didn't even own.

Someone took five minutes out of their day and it made my year. I've never forgotten that lesson.

Star Trek Delivers Libertarian Message

blankfist says...

@NetRunner, are you purposely trying to be obtuse? Your example is petty is silly, but I'll bite.

I'm saying if someone hits someone with their car, then, yes, they should be held accountable. It doesn't matter if they bought that car or a gun or a walking stick or a pack of gum with their money (labor); it's incidental and irrelevant like most of your argument comparisons.

I am also saying a man's labor should be owned by him and not by others. That has nothing to do with the car he purchases, as long as it's not stolen from him, which would be an act of aggression and he should have full rights to do whatever he can in his power to thwart the theft. Compulsory taxes on his labor, however, is theft. Also forcing him to serve those he chooses not to serve is a form of slavery.

If I forced you to program my website under the threat of violence, would that not be immoral?

Great invention by Schoolgirls in the West Bank

jdbates says...

Asil Shaar and Nour Alarda, Nablus, West Bank, Palestine

When Asil Shaar and Nour Alarda observed the struggles of sight-impaired neighbors attempting to navigate the hills and war-torn streets of their hometown, Nablus, and find their way around the refugee camp where they lived, they decided to do something about it. They created an obstacle-detecting cane for the blind.

The process wasn’t easy, especially considering how difficult it was to obtain electronic parts such as sensors and circuits in the West Bank. The determined pair made multiple trips to Ramallah, about 45 minutes away and through two military checkpoints, to find the materials they needed to complete the task.

Though previous “laser canes” existed, these models were flawed in that they were unable to detect uneven surfaces or holes in the ground. In contrast, the girls’ design incorporates two infrared sensors into a pine walking stick, one front-facing and one down-facing, to detect both obstacles and drop-offs.
