Lets look at what Satriani claims that Coldplay has plagiarized.

The chords: The chords are mostly the same, but the last chord is different. The chord progression is also a very logical and common one and I think you can find many songs with similar chords.

The melody: The melody follows the well established musical principle of guide tones which is a logical melody to apply to the chords. The only similaritys are in the first short phrase, the rest can be atributed to guide tones. Furthermore, Satrianis phrasing is very different and ends up sounding very different. The first song that came to my mind when I heard Viva La Vida was this song which is much better match than Satriani's:



As for Chuck Berry vs. Beach Boys, the whole song was almost exactly the same in terms of melody and chords. Satriani's claim is based on only one phrase of a melody and some random chords...

This has been a home of a sorts for me for 3 years this spring. I swear this place was the only thing that kept me sane from the fall of 2006 to winter 2007. Thanks for that! I loved the game then and played hard.

I care about this site a lot, and I'm trying to roll w/ the changes and growing pains. Ultimately I love the idea of VS. You may have started out about the videos, but this is a community experiment through and through.

If there is only one store in town, then maybe someone should open a store and get some competition going? Besides, I would only want to get rid of minimum wage laws if a Negative Income Tax (thanks Krupo) system was put in place.

There are less jobs than people wanting work, and there is a spectrum of education among those workers.

... so what do you do with the people at the bottom? Either they get the jobs that no one wants, or they compete for higher-paying jobs against more qualified people (and lose).

Paying higher wages does not fix this problem, it simply increases the number of people willing to take the job (there's still a job shortage). Those at the bottom still lose.

How do you propose to fix that problem?

Sifting music videos is a daunting task. There are some folk here, however, whom are experts.
