Today Show Canoe

I have a hard time believing they would make a joke out of flooding of neighborhoods and peoples homes. I would think they would catch crazy amounts of flack for such a stunt. Especially the Today Show. They are however acting quite light hearted about the situation. Curious if you know something i don't know.

Unarmed child shot in the back while running from police

spawnflagger says...

apparently a video surfaced earlier today showing Antwon (the 17-year old 'child') shooting someone in a driveby just before the video of police shooting above. The car they ran out of already had rear window shot out. Antwon was found with empty clip in pocket, 2 guns were found in car.
Protesting about this particular case of police use-of-force seems to be misplaced/premature. We'll see.
EDIT: apparently the report of that video was false.

Just how smart is Donald Trump?

notarobot says...

@moonsammy:

Have a look at this interview from 1980. Pay attention to the patterns of his speech. Notice how they are different than the example used in the Nerdwriter analysis I posted above.

At a later interview (1988?) you can hear that the patterns in his speech are a bit closer to the Nerdwriter. You can hear how he occasionally repeats words. He has had more practice with interviews here than in 1980 and it shows. How he crafts his speech is not a product of an untrained mind--it is intentional.

The way he dodges the "are you smarter than other people?" question is also interesting.

Again, I'm not arguing that he's a genius. Just that assumptions of his intellect based on the choice to use simple language have been mistaken. His choice to use simple language is a big part of what gave him broad appeal among voters for whom higher education was out of reach. It may have won him the presidency.

I don't like him, but he isn't stupid.

God throws Romney from the Skies-Florida Blimp Ad crash

quantumushroom says...

This is only "good" progress for a 2nd-world nation. Obama can't run on his record.

The American people (those who vote anyway) aren't buying that this is the best that can be done.

President Mitt will succeed or fail based on how closely he adheres to conservative fiscal principles.

As for govt. spending, don't worry, it's always increasing.

>> ^bareboards2:

And progress has been made. Thanks for reminding us all of just how smart and aware President Obama is.
If Obama loses, all I can hope for is that Moderate Mitt shows up. Because if we get Tea Party Brown Noser Mitt, we are headed for an economic disaster. Mitt is fond of saying we are currently headed in the direction of Greece. If we go all Tea Party, we will head in the direction of Spain.
Moderate economic action based on economic facts is what will save us.

Take a moment to read about economic research. An excerpt:
The U.S. economy finally seems to be recovering in earnest, with housing on the rebound and job creation outpacing growth in the working-age population. But the news is good, not great — it will still take years to restore full employment — and it has been a very long time coming. Why has the slump been so protracted?
The answer — backed by overwhelming evidence — is that this is what normally happens after a severe financial crisis. But Mitt Romney’s economic team rejects that evidence. And this denialism bodes ill for policy if Mr. Romney wins next month.

>> ^quantumushroom:
Back in February 2009, President Obama told Today Show host Matt Lauer that he’d be a one-term president if he didn’t fix the economy in three years.
“I will be held accountable,” Obama said. “I’ve got four years and … A year from now, I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress, but there’s still going to be some pain out there … If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

Car races used to be dangerous

therealblankman says...

>> ^raverman:

People used to be braver. They saw life threatening risks and did it anyway.
Now we think ourselves so clever - and our individual lazy lives as so important that we should never take any risks.
But taking risks and being the survivor of something that was dangerous or near impossible is what has brought us to where we are as a species.

This statement is so full of crap that I'm not sure where to begin. Theres no courage in strapping oneself into a car and traveling at insane speeds without safety equipment if that safety equipment exists, which it did not in the time that these scenes were filmed. Are you saying Fangio would not have worn a safety belt and proper crash helmet if he'd been offered one?

So many people in the world today show immeasurable courage in so many ways. I don't see any signs of the "advancement of our species" slowing down any time soon.
