Dan Savage on What to Expect From a Gay Roommate

My understanding is that he's a bit off on at least some of his biology. When it comes to the ear, I believe he's referring to otoacoustic emissions.. However, if you note from the abstract I linked, it doesn't quite work that way. Yes, homosexual or bisexual females tend to have patterns of otoacoustic emissions with more masculine characteristics, however the same is not true for homosexual or bisexual males. While the results are insignificant, I'm told that the trend is in the opposite direction (that is, homosexual males have slightly "hyper masculinized" cochlea). These changes are often sloppily attributed to "genetic" differences. However, many theories suggest that it may have something to do with testosterone exposure in utero or during early development (though genetic mechanisms are possible in many circumstances).

With regard to the voice box, I dunno. I stick to sensory systems.

In female to male gender transition, transgendered people often have voice changes with testosterone injections if they are younger. Their voice will drop, not unlike during puberty for men, although they may also choose to attend voice therapy to further 'pass' as a man.

Anyhow, the sound of what is 'feminine' and 'masculine' are to a degree hormonal. It can be hormones delivered artificially, hormones exposed to during development that change the different aspects of the brain, a lot of the details are not well understood.

Theres a lot more to say, but I might be rambling. Jump on the googles if you're interested, maybe stumble on the Kinsey Institutes sex and gender research.

anyone know if what savage says is true or is he just speculating? I always assumed it was a sociological thing and a manifestation of counterculture and that it would eventually go away as gays are accepted and treated like everyone else

Transgender at 11 yrs. Old

Its clear when she was born, her brain was in the female gender position while her body was not. There are simply so many things that can go different in the body that I am in no way surprised we see a case like this. IMO however they need to act fast (I'm sure they prolly know this too) to supress testosterone levels before she hits puberty, or her world will quickly come crashing down.

Sex change is inevitable, but personally I think it is a far better route then to try drugs or even surgery to alter how the brain works. It is far less catastrophic to change the body to accomidate then it is to change the mind after so many years of working like a girl.

I personally know the queen-like member with admin-like powers gained through tenure on a site still going hard from back in the D & D days, first green-screen PC's days-All text generated scenarios-she's so much a pillar there, that if she failed to log-on at least once a week, the com-log would be replete with half the forum buzzing with tales of her glory and the other half crying, "I can't make a decision until she logs on again!"

Women of the internet have the capacity to wield extraordinary influence beyond their mere sex-appeal as a repose from the mundane, testosterone-gone-awry fare crowding the place...

I apologize if my above previous comments in any way might have influenced some insane decision any woman on this site may be about to make-I exercise my rights under mischief, to plead the Bart Simpson defense in this situation....

Piers Morgan: "You are an incredibly stupid man"

Well, "confronted the shooter" is way over-stating what happened. The guy was standing behind a pillar, trying to decide whether to shoot or not as the killer struggled with his jammed gun. He claims the killer saw him. But did he? This young man doesn't seem to be making it up, he seems genuinely distressed by what happened, not posturing. But I don't know. I'd like to hear from someone other than this young man about what happened.

If it did go down as he says, then I applaud him for not going all testosterone and shooting up the place.

I hesitate to say this, because I haven't researched it and I suspect it is unconstitutional...

CEO salary could be limited by law as a factor of the lowest wage paid. Minimum wage times 100? 150? It could be a huge number that galls, and still be less than they are awarded now.

It's like sports stars salaries -- it isn't "prevailing wage" -- it is ego and dick size. I'm the biggest on the block, I'm the best, so I should get the most.

That can never be legislated away though. Testosterone has had an evolutionary advantage for us humans for thousands of years. Not so much now that we aren't hunter-gatherers anymore.

If shareholders had the guts to vote out entire Boards of some of these public companies that award excessive CEO compensation, maybe things would change. I think they are too afraid of what it will do to the stock price and their own investment. Another conundrum.

The reality is unfairly that testosterone does give males a huge athletic advantage when it kicks in. Similarly, most professional level sports are extremely dependent on athletic ability. Speed is included in that. There is a reason that the male world records for every sprint are faster than those for females. That reason is genetics and it doesn't care about political correctness or being fair.

In HS our senior girls basketball team had much better game sense, court awareness and overall basketball IQ, than the boys junior team. Those of us on the senior guys team were getting tired of the lack of respect the junior guys were showing for the senior girls and so we arranged a game between them. Knowing how much smarter and aware the girls were on the court we figured it'd be very humbling for the young guys to get beat. We were unpleasantly surprised to watch the younger guys simply running circles around the girls from one end of the floor to the other. They were just plain faster, a lot faster, and all the smarts in the world just didn't make up that difference.

It may not be fair, but that's the way it is. If smarts could make the difference, Michael Jordon would still be getting better every year, but realistically as age cuts into his athleticism smarts just aren't enough anymore and the torch is passed on to those in their prime.

There is no reason a female couldn't achieve the same at teen or pro level. Speed and balance (and timing) is all it takes to be highly competitive.

There's a huge reason. If a female were to play in college or some how make it to the professional level. She may have tons of skill and balance like you say, she might even be the next Barry Sanders, but even he got hit. you put a 140 pound-150 pound girl in at running back, she will get injuries that would end the career as soon as it starts. Quickness is a lot, but men's natural ability to have that extra muscle and padding is why they keep men and women in different leagues.

If we were focusing entirely on brute-force forms of football, I agree. Except I wasn't, I was thinking more in the direction of how she could continue to utilize her honed skills.
I'm not disputing that males have a significant muscle advantage for handing out and taking impacts, but nor was I forgetting there are multiple versions of football, given that I loosely referenced such as a precursor to my point. My statement was an alternative to the 'testosterone wins everything' view.
To clarify, I specifically had Touch Football in mind when stating there would be no reason females couldn't effectively play with men post-puberty.

I know I might get some rap for this, but girls at this age are on par with boys in terms of physical capacity; however, as testosterone kicks in in the early teens, the gender difference starts to become apparent. Nonetheless, she has some amazing football skills.

No one is under any illusions about this girl or her ability to hang with the boys.
