Volcanic Eruption of Mount Tavurvur (shock wave included)

deathcow says...

so minimally that far... this was pretty good from wiki:

Shock waves form when the speed of a fluid changes by more than the speed of sound.[3] At the region where this occurs sound waves travelling against the flow reach a point where they cannot travel any further upstream and the pressure progressively builds in that region, and a high pressure shock wave rapidly forms.

Shock waves are not conventional sound waves; a shock wave takes the form of a very sharp change in the gas properties on the order of a few mean free paths (roughly micrometers at atmospheric conditions) in thickness. Shock waves in air are heard as a loud "crack" or "snap" noise. Over longer distances a shock wave can change from a nonlinear wave into a linear wave, degenerating into a conventional sound wave as it heats the air and loses energy. The sound wave is heard as the familiar "thud" or "thump" of a sonic boom, commonly created by the supersonic flight of aircraft.

New Alex Jones Mad As Hell Tirade

Taint says...

Alex Jones seems to believe every theory that crosses his desk.

He also should be the poster boy for what's happened to discourse in this country at large. Gone are the days when people try and convince each other, now we only try to get the most attention from the side that already agrees with us. A shouting tirade of uninterrupted drivel, and if you shout loud enough, there seems to be no shortage of people willing to put a microphone in front of you.

Oh, and gun rights as a basis to defend yourself from the military is retarded. The military would lay waste to whatever arsenal you've got held up in your compound in Montana. You wouldn't even get a chance to hear the supersonic missile that blasts you and your preparations to smithereens.

In that type of revolutionary scenario, the only hope would be in a fractured military, and none of that would be very pretty.

The sad thing is , Alex Jones occasionally grazes and actual decent point, like about large multinational corporations being beyond national taxes and laws, but it's lost in so much bullshit, who could care to listen to him.

He would do well to focus on something, instead of trying to fit every bullshit crackpot idea someone tried to sell a book on into a five minute conversation.

Russian Extreme Sport Mountain Ball Ends In Tragedy

*eia not snuff , not any more snuff than watching a video of little kids boarding a plane which the last you saw on the video was the engine sucking in a giant goose and flaming out on takeoff.

I can find 50 more videos on the sift where things ended tragically.

Lay down some solid guidelines and I would be happy to follow them. "Videos where things go bad (even after the video ends) and it makes most people feel really uneasy to watch." ?

Thank you, you are so right.

I think he means the rounds are supersonic which is why you hear them impacting before you hear them being fired. But most ammunition these days is supersonic (bar some pistol rounds like the .45) so it's not that special really, its just that the rounds impacting are usually closer to the camera than the A10s which adds to the effect. That A10 burp is damn awesome though.

Fairchild, love the name, Thunderbolts are subsonic.

Red Bull is saving it for a professional quality promotional viral vid. It'll be out soon.>> ^spoco2:

Skip to around 3:30 if you'd rather not see some seriously dull checklisting.
And then... meh, not that exciting watching a blob for that long.
Where's the video of the full decent from his helmet or chest?

4.5 hr flight from London to Sydney

They must be talking about using space to get from Europe to Australia, as friction is a real bitch otherwise.

Possibly, although I think its somewhat more likely they'd just be flying at very high altitudes where the atmosphere is very thin.

From what I read on wiki it seems the engine is basically rocket/turbine hybrid. They use liquid hydrogen as fuel but instead of storing oxygen they suck it out of the air. The problem the cooling fixes seems to be related to supersonic airflow. Turbine engines need subsonic airflow to work properly so they use a ram, a cone on the front of the turbine, to slow the airflow before it enters the engine. This heats the air entering the engine up a lot, hot air takes up more space and so its difficult to get enough oxygen to the hydrogen fuel. Cooling the air after it passes over the ram lowers the air pressure and allows more air to pass through the engine. Scramjets approach this problem a different way in that they can operate with supersonic airflow, although they have the limitation of not working subsonic.

Anyway. Its quite fascinating. I don't think we'll be seeing commercial aircraft using this technology anytime soon though. I'd be pretty nervous about flying on something that is basically rocket powered. Space tourism maybe? If it can fly to high altitudes with the turbine and then switch seamlessly to using onboard oxygen it could be a much more efficient way of getting into space without using onboard oxygen the whole way up.

Oh, and RIP Concorde. I used to go to school under their flightpath out of Heathrow. 11am on Wednesdays they used to rattle the windows passing over.
