Anyone here like Aquariums for a hobby ? (Pets Talk Post)

kymbos says...

My secret shame.

I am a recovering aquarist (that's actually a word, says Google). I had tropical fish as a child, and started to get back into it after moving to my current city.

One thing I discovered was that changing 1/3 of the water weekly is a good way to keep fish healthy, but clean your filter only once every couple of months (and only squeeze out the sponge inside the filter - never use any detergent). It seems that the filter ends up full of 'good bacteria' which balances the tank ecosystem. I had been vigorously scrubbing the filter every week and wondering why my fish kept getting diseases. The guy at the shop gave me the above advice, and suggested cleaning the filter in tank water (not fresh water). That is, when you take 1/3 of the tank water out, clean the filter in that water. Worked a treat.

I really loved having the tank, but eventually grew tired of it. It just became a fortnightly chore (every week ended up too much).

Would be keen to see pics once you get it set up.

Abbas Submits Palestine Statehood Bid, Gets Standing Ovation

The most terrifying thing that can happen to these fake, ragtag Arabs posing as a people is to get Statehood: they would have to stop being sponges and parasites on the world and build and create things, including a functional society, which will never happen.
In a matter of months the "State of Palestine" would degrade into another platform for missile-launches against Israel.

Yeah...curse those fake people and their fake children. They don't deserve a state or their lives...only pain which thankfully we have provided to them for decades.

Matt Damon defending teachers

heropsycho says...

Your description of a teacher's job is like me describing my current IT job as such: "Really, all I do is work with the same technology products. I just Read The F'ing Manual and install the stuff."

That would be a pretty ignorant way of looking at my current job.

You have never taught in a public school. First off, a teacher who reads directly out of the textbook day in and day out is a crappy teacher. Even the crappy teachers I worked with didn't just pick up the book and read what was in there, and assign the exercises at the end of the chapter. You also live in this wonderful fantasy world where the students arrive in your classroom, like perfect brain sponges, and they'll just magically hear what you say, or read the textbook, and magically, they overcome their various learning disabilities, weaknesses in various types of intelligence, distractions in life, and just ...

POOF! THEY LEARN AUTOMAGICALLY!

Not to mention a teacher's role is not simply to teach facts and information. A teacher's role is also to help inspire students to want to learn and do more well beyond the classroom. Those are the teachers students remember for the rest of their lives. I can still name you my favorite teachers from elementary, middle, high school, and college. I remember specific lessons from each one that really spoke to me. I became a history teacher because of my high school history teacher, Claire Tilton, who still teaches to this day, and she's still unbelievable at her job, but she's "just a high school teacher" I guess to you.

I wouldn't be where I am today without those teachers. And those teachers did more than just inspire me; I knew probably a dozen or so people who did 180's and loved history after being in Ms. Tilton's class.

It's one thing to know the subject matter; it's a whole other thing to be able to help another human being who is struggling to understand it learn it, or motivate a completely disinterested human into wanting to learn about it. If you think that people who can do this are a dime a dozen, I don't know what to tell you. I think we end up losing a lot of talented teachers who do inspire because society doesn't value education as it should.

You're certainly right on some elements, but I think there are a number of facets to this issue.
We can probably test the difficult of a job by looking at who can and who can't do that job. Most teachers, like Matt Damon's mom standing next to him, probably can't do particularly cognitively complex jobs like that of a $125k per year software engineer. I took a class in the education & child development department of my college, and I was surprised by how easy the subject matter was relative to classes in e.g. the sciences.
She probably teaches the same (or at least similar) middle school or high school subjects every year, and her primary job (AFAIK) is to follow the instructions in the teacher's edition textbook on a relatively simple subject matter that can be understood by teenagers. Her primary job is not to innovate technologically or come up with a new business strategy to outsmart ruthless competitors; it's to follow instructions.
That's a really different job from something like writing 50 page technical specifications documents, and salaries tend to be proportional to the cognitive complexity required, since anyone can do cognitively simple jobs, but only a limited number of people can do cognitively complex jobs.

Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

It's telling how many of the commenters here try to groundlessly assign motivations.

Except this woman (Jean K) is heavily involved in politics and makes all her fortune based on peddling her particular line of phycho-babbble and fearmongering.

Give it a rest. You want to be proponent of feminism? I say stop putting women down and making them into victims by reducing their intelligence to mindless sponges that uncritically absorbs everything fed to them. You know, maybe treat the women you're trying to claim are intelligent as actually being intelligent.

Agree 100%. Jean K's entire argument is the same "people-are-helpless-morons" argument that I so despise in so many ways. It presume people are idiots, morons, and helpless puppets of powers beyond their control, and that the "evil" thing (whatever the self-appointed nanny says it is) must be excorsised. Bull - freaking - crap.

JP assumes all females are stupid, helpless, unintelligent twits who mindlessly dance to the image of any ad they see. And JUST as bad (but often ignored) is her presumption that all men are evil, horrifying, selfish, sex-crazed brutes that love to carve up women, beat them, or otherwise abuse them because of what they see in TV, or whatever.

Give me a break. The only this worth censoring here is this woman and her stupid prejudices about males & females.

>> ^rottenseed:

name me one woman devoid of dick because of the social image of beauty, and I'll show you a broad who is unfuckable by anybody's standards...
What I mean to say, in a less crass fashion now, is that I like what I like, despite what these ads tell me is beautiful. I think a majority of men will agree that the love of their lives aren't represented by these ideals of beauty, rather they fulfill their own interests and fetishes. Unfortunately, in America, there's not a shortage of obese people perpetuating the gene pool, so that just goes to show you that these ads mean nothing other than to those that decide to make them an issue.
>> ^bareboards2:
I agree that it is terrible that this is happening to men now. I don't think that is progress, I think it is a disease that is spreading.
The point you are missing, though, is that these are the VAST MAJORITY of the images that women see. Pay attention to the next movie or TV show you watch. How many "normal" guys are cast in parts? How many "normal" women?
While you are watching, switch the genders in your mind and imagine a woman who is of the same attractiveness level as the men. I think it will shock you when you realize that you see normal looking men ALL THE TIME and rarely do you see normal looking women.
What percentage of all posters/images are JUST male body parts? What percentage of men in the media fit this impossibly high

Good fucking point. If this is such an epidemic why are there so many fat people spawning?

This isn't feminism. This is more alarmist nonsense from people who want to shape society in their image or in a way that contradicts aspects of our instinctual humanity which makes them uncomfortable. The vocal people in here are the new prude prohibitionists who see what they perceive as ills in society (sin by another name) and want to stamp them out somehow. In this case, photoshop is the weapon, the cigar-gnashing Mad Men executives at the advertising agency are the culprits, and the mindless impressionable women are the victims.

Give it a rest. You want to be proponent of feminism? I say stop putting women down and making them into victims by reducing their intelligence to mindless sponges that uncritically absorbs everything fed to them. You know, maybe treat the women you're trying to claim are intelligent as actually being intelligent. That's probably a good place to start.
