MoveOn & R.E.M. Video: We Can't Afford to Wait

quantumushroom says...

Does REM have 2 trillion lying around for "free" healthcare? Because the government don't, and it don't have the money to pay for what does now.

Whenever someone says government doing Anything will "cut costs" they should be turned into a living traffic cone on a freeway.

"At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

Those are external gills on the sides of its head, BTW. The water it dwells in must be oxygen-poor. Every once in a while the Discovery Channel posts an interesting fact about something, and somehow I miraculously retain that knowledge. Then it returns to its normal programming of blowing shit up, a là 'Mythbusters.'

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel...well...not fine.

Bizkit the Sleep Walking Dog

plastiquemonkey says...

this is REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).

muscle tone is usually suppressed/switched off during the vivid dreams of REM sleep, but in RBD it's not, so the dreams are acted out. it seems to be caused by a problem in the lower brainstem, but the condition is not well understood. development of RBD predicts the later development of other neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, even years later.

people with RBD act out their dreams and may injure themselves or their bedmates in doing so. safety is a real concern. the condition usually improves with a sedative medication called clonazepam, which probably works by minimizing REM sleep so the person doesn't dream as much.

RBD has been described in dogs and in fact was depicted in disney movies before the scientific description was made.

here's a nice article about REM sleep, RBD and some associated sleep disorders.
