The REAL Reason You're Circumcised

ChaosEngine says...

I've known the whole "Kellogg was a puritanical nutjob" origin for a long time now.

It's probably why I find the whole thing so distasteful.

Sorry, but it is intentionally cutting off part of a human for no good reason. Just because people were misinformed previously or they thought the invisible sky father said they should doesn't justify it. As far as I'm concerned, it's equivalent to bound feet (although obviously nowhere near as painful).

It is barbaric, especially the orthodox Judaic version, which adds unsanitary and frankly kinda creepy to the mix too.

Try this thought experiment.
We have discovered a new island in the middle of the pacific. Miraculously, they have had no contact with the outside world since humans arrived there. When we arrive we find all the women are missing their left nipple. It turns out this is ritualistically cut off at birth. "It's not a big deal" they say. "the baby gets over it quickly and it doesn't affect them in later life".
Ok with this?

While I agree it's improper, I think 'barbaric' might be a little far in most cases. I feel like now it's mostly due to good intentions paired with misinformation, a little religious preference, and just a dash of surgical 'barbarism' for aesthetics. Perhaps there should be at least a push to re-educate the doctors and suggest they actually discuss the pros and cons with parents, not just ask 'you want?'.
Somehow I feel if it were up to the individual once they were of age that there would be a lot fewer of them. ;-)
I did find it interesting to learn it's hilarious 'origin' here in the US though.

UPDATE: As of February 2014 ALL coastline of California now reads CPM's as high as the exposure at 40,000 ft while flying in a commercial jet from cosmic radiation....Check incidences of cancer in commercial airline pilots vs. folks on the ground, and move inland if you are taken to windy walks on the beachfront in Cali, peeps...Cali coast and the fishes therein from that side of the Pacific are already fucked for centuries.

Ah, I can see you have a FORT in mind. There is no FORT, really. The whole area is the Fort, the land itself. The "blocking fort" ARE the bunkers -- on top of the bluffs and at water level. There are two other forts in a triangular shape -- one on Whidbey Island and one on Marrowstone Island. The idea was if any boat came into the waters of Admiralty Inlet, one of the forts bunkers' big guns could take them out.

The bunkers are all still there. They were going to jackhammer them away, but they were made from imported Belgian concrete and they just would NOT break up.

So you can go crawling around in all sorts of bunkers. Some of the rooms have had their doors welded shut, for safety reasons. But there are plenty to explore.

These three forts aren't on an estuary, however. It is ocean water, but not the ocean. The Pacific Ocean stops about where the Northwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula is kind of south of Vancouver Island, in Canada. Things get narrow there, and the ocean waves can't reach. Or something. So there are bodies of water that ships and boats follow going east, then they turn south to Seattle, which is on the coast of Puget Sound.

It's all very confusing. I can never figure out which way is north. Port Townsend has water on three sides, fer pitys sake!

Oh, and they did remove the big guns, even as they left the bunkers. You can see where they were and get a good sense of how big those guns were.

None of the three forts ever shot in anger. Just practice.

Exactly! "Shop fronts" only.

So when are you coming to America? It is beautiful in my part of the country, albeit very young by European or even East Coast standards. We are very proud of our oldest building. I think it was built in 1875 or something. Maybe even later. Ha.

radx said:

Was it just the location of the blocking fort in PT or the general construction of forts at the mouth of the estuary in the first place? And is there (supervised) access to the entire facility or are some parts, say munitions bunkers, still off limits?

An Officer and a Gentleman, I know that one. Looking at pictures of the fort, you can even recognize one or two locations. So they refurbished the sides the needed and left the rest untouched, like the shop fronts in Northern Ireland during last year's G8?

It is snowing right now here in Pacific NW. Our first real snowfall.

Time to shovel the driveway. When the sun comes up.

All that snow? That precipitation? It is the other side of the California drought -- climate crisis indeed.

We're in trouble, my friend.

Psst.... narration.

It is true that native Americans are as diverse as white Americans in their opinions. There are many many reservations here in the Pacific Northwest. One of the reasons it took so long to finally abandon "Redskins" in our high school is that there were local tribe members who didn't have a problem with it.

If the native tribes weren't monolithic in their response, why should the white people abandon their "heritage"?

I do wonder if we can hear the final sentence of this differently. It may be that some natives are fine with their local high school mascot, for the same reason our local high was -- it is tradition.

But what the vid says is -- we don't call OURSELVES that. And that may be a monolithic truth.

Probably not, though. Humans can be pesky to paint as black or white ... or red.

Enough native Americans are pissed about it. We don't need 100% agreement.

But seriously - racist comments like this get you an official warning. Please consult the guidelines if you need guidance.

Fantastic Toy Commercial For Future Girl Engineers

My_design says...

OK, so everyone can comment all they want about camera cuts, who did what in the commercial, whatever the f#ck you want to say tear this apart, deconstruct it or knock it down. But I'm a sixteen year veteran of the toy industry, and I see potential. I see something here that moves past the crap that Mattel and Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, Spinmaster, New Bright, Jada, MGA and others cram down the throats of kids at places like Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R Us. I'm guilty of being a part of that machine, I admit it. But I'm not necessarily happy about it, and seeing things like this makes me even less happy about it. Especially that I now have a 4 year old daughter. So I truly hope that this thing takes off. I wish them the absolute best of luck, I'm going to be voting regularly for them to get the spot, and I look forward to buying their product.

Wikileaks has released another bombshell

Mikus_Aurelius says...

TPP is primarily a way of strengthening ties with counties that might otherwise be economically (and later otherwise) reliant on a stronger and more aggressive China. If these particulars are true, that's a shame because the treaty will not pass the Senate, nor should it. However, the Russian state is hardly a neutral party in this. They border the Pacific too, and you'll notice they weren't highlighted in red.
