“Nigeria remains a major investment destination and a country where most businesses thrive in trust, good faith, competence and integrity,” said Prof Dora Akunyili, minister of information and communication. “Nigeria also demands an unconditional apology from Sony Corporation for this deliberate negative campaign against the country’s image and reputation.

“The apology must be given the same measure of publicity by Sony Corporation in all channels where the unfortunate adverts were aired. In the light of the above, the Federal Government of Nigeria requests Sony Corporation to immediately withdraw that advertisement from circulation.”

Apparently, the country was insulted by the “Nigerian millionaire” comment making fun of the scam emails sent to people all over the globe. "

Shell settles Nigeria deaths case

Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to pay $15.5m to settle a lawsuit which accused the oil firm of complicity in rights abuses in Nigeria.

The case, due for trial in the US next week, was brought by relatives of a group of anti-Shell activists executed in 1995 by Nigeria's military rulers.

The families say Shell helped the government to punish the campaigners.

But the company insists it did nothing wrong and said the payment was part of a "process of reconciliation".

Shell official Malcolm Brinded said: "This gesture also acknowledges that, even though Shell had no part in the violence that took place, the plaintiffs and others have suffered."

I can understand why the families accepted the settlement, but I am a bit disappointed because now Shell doesn't have to admit guilt and no legal precedent is set.

I don't think that there will be any respect or trust for the United States internationally until they prosecute their war criminals. Every country on the planet will continue to distrust the US. If the US were to prosecute Bush and Cheney for their obvious and massively documented multitude of crimes that they have committed it would actually send a shockwave throughout the world with the signal that corrupt leaders will not last or benefit from their actions. Think of how powerful an influence that would be to Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Qatar, the United Emirates, etc. etc.
I'm getting the impression that people from the Scandinavian countries, Canada, all of Latin America, Mexico, the entire Caribbean, Asia, western Europe, etc. etc. are at the very least not on line with the US's ongoing selfrichous imperial trajectory. But that's the people. Not the governments, but look at the tea leaves in the air. It should be underlined that Latin American countries will never again be dictted by another US dictator again. That's a huge change.Anyway...Obama's hope and change slogans have worked so far... I just hope that people within the us will push him to work for your interests. If you sit back he'll follow just about any special interest pushing him. Citizens rather than random corporations or insurinse companies need to push him.

And on a personal note, I'm a life sciences researcher living in Indiana, and literally half the people I work with are immigrants, from Iran, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Syria, China, Hungary,... The cliche that diversity is our strength is absolutely true in my experience.

I've weighed in on the whole british/irish thing before so I will only say that the wiki article says that the porter style originated in london, whereas Guinness originated in Dublin, Ireland. That said, Arthur Guinness was a prominent orangeman, wouldnt employ catholics and certainly would have considered himself a loyal British subject.

In the end Guinness is owned by a multinational, Diageo anyway and they are closing down large parts of their Dublin brewery. Most of it is brewed in Nigeria now so I guess its a moot point!
