Report From the Seal Slaughter - Spring 2010
Being from the maritime provinces I have become in all honestly both annoyed and embarrassed from the seal hunt. I'm annoyed that the fisheries ministers from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have associated their policies vastly erroneously with those on the northern territories.
#1.The vast amount of people who hunt seals in the maritime provinces are not native people; it's not a native economic issue. (it's a false correlation).
#2.Three Department of fisheries studies in a row proved that seals are a minute factor in th depletion of fish stocks and killing them as an excuse is irrelevant as they are an adaptable mid-level predator.
#3.Within our own models from the department of fisheries we're killing off our top predators faster than we can replace them....and we've increased sea farming as a response. No correlation to science.
So in conclusion the fisheries policies of the maritime provinces are based on myths, propagating thru short term jobs and mascaraeding as science.
Possibly the World's Tallest Dog
That's a Landseer Newfoundland, specifically.
>> ^Yogi:
"Possibly the World's Tallest Dog" and "Measuring 3 feet tall..."
Does not compute.
He's in the running for tallest living dog, not tallest of all time. Considering 3' is in the typical height range for male Irish Wolfhounds, I would be surprised if Boomer makes the cut.

FOX's Shep Smith: Was that Canadian Health Care Story Fair?
FYI The Canadian government(Federal) doesn't run our health care system. The federal government simply mandated that all citizens are required to have it, then left it to the provinces(aka s on how to best get it to the citizens. Since they're in BC(aka the odd land of Canada), more so than Ontario. You should be asking "what's wrong with BC's healthcare system, and what are the other critical care cases that had to be in front of them?
To break it down it goes like this:
Federal Government - Mandate by law all Canadians must have to provinces
All provinces & territories required by law to provide health care
Level of health care must be equal and equitable across the country as mandated by the oversight of the federal government(there is someone who checks to make sure that things aren't out of whack).
That means. The level of healthcare in BC is not the same as in Alberta, or Saskatchewan, or Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, or PEI. However, they are all close to the same levels mandated by law, but everyone has it. It also means that in some provinces some drugs are not covered, while in other provinces others are. However, if you live in Ontario and go to BC and need medical help. You're covered. OHIP(Ontario Medicare), will cover the treatment. The only places where the federal government is required to deal with health care are in places where such as back-ass-nowhere(territories, and reserves, or settlements in the middle of nowhere). Even then there are equalization, the province/territory covers part.

I would wager it is a Newfoundland
Great Big Sea "England"
http://lyricwiki.org/Great_Big_Sea:England
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
We shipped on board the Maryanne
To find a better life
And we walked across the water
When she broke up on the ice
We came ashore in Carbonear
With nothing but our rights
And I wondered if I e'er again
Would see my London lights
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
We spend our days amid the waves
Working water, hook and twine
We would go for weeks with blistered cheeks
Waiting for the sun to shine
But as long as the sky hold over us
We will not taste the brine
And we'll curse the cod
With the fear of God
As we haul in every line
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our native soil
To chase a wish and hunt the Fish
And on the rocks to toil
We were far from the shores of England
Should we find Fortune's Favour
And be spared from the gale
We will live off honest labour
With our hearts as big as sails
But if I should die don't bury me
Or leave me to the sea
Please send my bones back to my home
Where my spirit can be free
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our native soil
To chase a wish and hunt the Fish
And on the rocks to toil
We were far from the shores of England
Things We Say Wrong (Linguistics) - What You Ought To Know
OK. You're off base. This isn't about Linguistics. This is prescriptive grammar.
There's two basic sets of rules of language, prescriptive and descriptive. The first is standard grammar, where rules are given by the keepers of language in ivory towers; you must say it this way, not that way. The second type, the descriptive rules, look at how native speakers actually speak, and describe those rules without judgement. This field is called Linguistics. Linguistics is not at all concerned with how others perceive the language, or about what's officially correct or not.
What this guy is talking about is prescriptive rules of grammar, which has nothing to do with linguistics.
There's a saying in linguistics: "A language is a dialect with an army and a navy." This means that whichever variety of a language is spoken by those in power is perceived as the correct way, and other ways are considered wrong. Even the normal TV news anchor standard way of speaking English is full of silly things that don't exist in "strange" dialects.
Take Newfoundland, Canada. In a variety of English spoken there, it's correct to say I is, you is, he is, she is, we is, and they is. To us, this sounds uneducated, but it makes much more sense than I am, you are, etc.
Beyond everything else, he confuses "four" with "for" and "two" with "to" which are different words, and have similar pronunciations by coincidence. There are clear, logical rules for why "for" can be pronounced "fer" but "four" never is.
The Life of a Country Cat (Walt)
I'm trying to place that dude's accent. Is that Scottish, or an Irish dialect from Newfoundland, or what? Is there a Canadian or Scotsman in the house?

Geography Fail
Even if, for some god-awful reason, she ever makes it to the White House, she's just proven to all of us that she's not going to know where to send the missiles. We get attacked by China or Iran, she's going to blow up Newfoundland.
Grreeeeaaat.
