Pete Maravich's 68 point game

snoozedoctor says...

I had the great fortune of shooting some hoops with Pete when I was at B-ball camp the summer before 9th grade and each evening we would watch him and the other NBA and college players scrimmage. There has never been anything like the guy, Bird and Nash included. But, Pete was not a real congenial guy. I don't think he was a happy man. During his time in the NBA, and a few years after, he struggled with alcoholism and depression.

For those of you unaware, Pete died of a heart condition at age 40 while playing in a pickup game. His autopsy showed he was missing the main artery that supplies blood to the left ventricle, (the left anterior descending artery). That he played as long and as hard as he did is a miracle in and of itself. Most people with the anomaly die before age 20.

Clifford Stoll: 18 minutes with an agile mind

pro says...

My main problem with this talk is that Clifford seems to be performing an act and not giving a talk, which I found quite distracting. I would be fine with the presentation if Clifford was geniunly as hyperactive and scattered as he comes across in this video. But from watching his other talks, his persona in this video seems so far removed from his actual self that the whole talk comes across as disingenuous. Sure, every talk needs a certain amount of showmanship, a certain amount of flair to enhance its reception. But Clifford emphasizes style way more than the content of his talk; its the kind of performance one would expect from Robin Williams if he was asked to portray John Nash in a remake of A Beautiful Mind.

Rick Nash - Goal of the decade

Rick Nash - Goal of the decade

Abel_Prisc says...

What a beautiful goal. And an insanely lucky one, too. Bryzgalov (the goalie) managed to poke check it away from him, but it bounced up Nash's leg and landed right back in front of his stick.

But saying that, I'm not taking away from how truly amazing the goal was.

EDIT: Nevermind, the goalie in net is Tellqvist, not Bryzgalov.

ART OF SEDUCTION: Not Pretty, Really

snoozedoctor says...

It doesn't particular move me when people complain of good fortune. "Gee, people love me for my money", "I wish people wouldn't idolize me because I'm Steve Nash, and the best basketball player in the world" kind of thing.

The tragedy is when people who have used their "attractiveness" all their life, to get where they are, finally age and loose that appeal. Many have their self-worth rapped up in appearance, hence the popularity of plastic surgery.

The Beatles - All You Need is Love

bobraingod says...

The broadcast was basically live with a little help. According to Mark Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, "...George Martin greatly decreased the chance of an on-air foul-up by having the Beatles play to their own pre-recorded rhythm track of take 10. Only the vocals, bass guitar, the lead guitar solo in the middle eight, drums and the orchestra were actually live." Hence the headphones.

Equally impressive was how fast they got the song done. The Beatles had agreed to perform a new song for an BBC international broadcast on May 22 and the actual performance took place about a month later on June 25; the Beatles didn't start working the song up as a group in the studio until June 14. The program was to be the first live broadcast across five continents and, to keep it accessible to all audiences, the BBC had requested that the Beatles keep the song simple. The international "snippets" were added for the occasion.

Lennon was apparently very nervous beforehand; the gum chewing was probably just a front to hide his anxiety. There was a whole slew of friends sitting around also: "Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richard, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Pattie Harrison, Jane Asher, Mike McCartney, Graham Nash and his wife, Gary Leeds and Hunter Davies" (Again, from Lewisohn). After the broadcast was over, the Beatles did a little bit of overdubbing (including some of Lennon's vocals) and the final mix was finished the next day. The single was out in stores on July 7, less than two weeks later.

Sixpence None the Richer - Don't Dream It's Over

Prospero says...

'Tis actually a baby Lamb and, for a pop group of an Evangelical Christian background (from the southern United States no less), the imagery has overt "religious" implications.

Moreover, I feel obliged to mention that this song has a rather ardent appreciation within the modern Evangelical culture - interpreted through a vastly different paradigm than that of its author (maestro Neil Finn). I've heard this song performed at everything from youth camps to evening Worship services.

Between the imagery of the woman (Ms. Nash) giving the Lamb to younger little girl, the strange dreamlike imagery of airplanes & parachutes, as well as the "freedom" and "peace" imagery (normally associated with socio-political activism), I gather this video represents an expression of the zeal of American religious culture towards "ministering" towards the "fallen world" of Western materialistic indulgence.

...or it could just be something that sounded cool/hip/artsy on paper, and seemed "deep" enough to convey a vague "message" without becoming overly didactic.
