Zero Punctuation: Fable 3

TED - Peter Molyneux demos Milo, the virtual boy

westy says...

Molyneux is one of the biggest shit talkers in the games industry,

I can almost garentee when u play this you could say annything u want its probably all bassed on tonality of voice , and miloes responses will always be the same , so get ready for you tube videos of people slagging of milo and the game playing out as normal.

all the desissoins the player has to make that will change the outcioem of milo will be compleaty neglagable , i bet there are probably a maximum of 5 outcomes and anny macro veratoins will be totaly benile on add vertualy nothing to the exsperance.

What this game is , is a onrails shooter / minni game , presented within a scripted narative . Thats not a bad thing , but all the shit molinue spews and all the bullshit about how much of a technaligical achivment and how revalutoinary this is ist compelaty retarded.

Peter Molyneux - is effectively a used car salesman for games , He is a good sales man but his products never amount to the talk.

Molyneux realy anoys me , he has made some gr8 games and milo as a game is just fine and quite intresting i just wish Molyneux would stop talking shit

Guild Wars 2 Shows Us How To Sell A Game

yellowc says...

While it looks nice technically, I've always felt Guild Wars lacked the artistic touch, to me it's like "yeah those are great looking polygons but the world it self is kind of bland and typical". For as old as WoW is, its artistic style still carries those ancient graphics even today, which is an impressive feat. Though of course that's quite a subjective area.

The way they talk about the game to me just screams, "we're seriously over compensating here", it just reminds of a Peter Molyneux speel and we all know how they turn out, moderately good games, fail to deliver on just about everything that would of made them unique.

I guess the good thing about GW is you just treat it like a single player game, no monthly fees and typically you get a good run through the first time. I enjoyed GW1 but it had very little replay value to me, the sense of character you have in other MMOs is completely lost in these super instanced MMOs. There is a strong disconnection and really no loyalty to "City Town #6", I really couldn't give a shit if the Centaurs want to over run it, I'll just go jump in to "City Town #7".

What at E3 are you most excited about? (Videogames Talk Post)

Peter Molyneux on Natal was hilarious to me... promoting him to Captain BS of MSFT games was brilliant. I have a lot of respect for him because he is always thinking about interesting ideas even if he rarely makes a good game.

Molyneux is an odd character isn't he? He just can't stop hyping things with that gleeful almost child-like enthusiasm. Bear in mind of course that Microsoft knew this before getting him to present.

You definitely aren't wrong, Croccydile. Tech demos are cool, but it's up to developers to come up with creative and compelling ways to use these tools. Engineers are there to just give you the tech, but they aren't game designers or artists. That's why I didn't think anything of Natal until Peter Molyneux came out and introduced us to Milo:

While I agree that this is still a tech demo, it's at least an original glimpse into what is possible with it.

Surely we won't see how well this will do until real developers get their hands on it, but personally I'd love to see what could be done with it when given to the brilliant creators of, say, Katamari, Flower, Eden, Boom Blox, etc. There will be a lot of crap, as there is on the Wii, but it might be worth sifting through it to get to the truly unique interactive bits of genius.

As far as the consumer goes, I don't think the price of entry on this is going to be much more than a normal controller. Since it uses the already available Playstation Eye. It should be very accessable, which may give it an edge when convincing developers to create for it.

This bit from www.penny-arcade.com and the ever eloquent Tycho reminded me of you guys:

"Peter Molyneux has no credit with me - he must always pay in advance, cash only. I am completely impervious to him, so when he says that he's invented some kind of digital boy this firm assertion is refracted into harmless light. Illusions of the kind he proposes are tremendously fragile - it's hard enough to maintain them in raw text, without the idiosyncrasies of the nested recognition systems in play with Milo. Please understand: I love the future, and I long to live there. I want very much to simulate a cognizant digital imp. But this man has broken my heart so many times that it can no longer contain love."

While I agree with your observations on the Molyneux hype machine, he at least does provide brief glimpses of originality and possibility for things like this, even if they don't always deliver for full fledged game experiences. Someone else might be able to do something special with it though. Frankly, when he came out on stage for Natal, I thought for sure he would be showing a tech demo for a Black and White 3 project with this. The motion interaction is exactly what he was trying to convey the first time around. Milo, I think, is far more compelling.

As for why we haven't incorporated this tech before, who knows? Processor speed in consoles is finally fast enough to handle the data? Frame rate and resolution for cameras was too low? Stereoscopic spacial recognition being new? I think with camera tech getting better and cheaper, this now becomes economically viable, where before the price point was probably out of reach for a console peripheral. But I'm just guessing.

^cyberbeast nailed it.

I thought this technology was a bit bullshit in that other video and now that I know that Molyneux is involved, I know it is going to be bullshit. I've been burned SO much by his overpromising that I will never again pre-order anything he's involved in, no matter the hype.

cybrbeast says...

I don't believe this for a second. Molyneux is know for making huge claims he can't back up. Remember Black & White, the creature was nowhere near as impressive as we were made to believe. Also Fable was a huge let down compared to what was promised. This interaction with Milo seems very scripted and I'm sure that when it's unscripted Milo will not understand or react well to most of what is presented by a real player.
