Women Fighting Street Harassers With Confetti In Mexico City

newtboy says...

I agree, they had incredibly slight examples of harassment in their video, but I'm certain they do get actually harassed in Mexico City (but you would think they would have video of it, wouldn't you). From what I've seen, Mexico City is much like New York City, but in a country where misogamy is considered normal and proper by most people.

Vengeance for what exactly? Some rude language not caught, or edited from the video? For past offenses? Men looking at women with violence in their hearts? What?

"Bad traffic jams force use of sidewalks" .....in Mexico City as well as in 1926 NYC. Fast forward to 2013, and you still take the sidewalk option in Mexico City. The only reason NYC doesn't still have this problem is that it's cost-prohibitive to most to own a vehicle there.

Guy Stops on Highway to Rescue Injured Dog

Jinx says...

Heh, I kinda agree probie but judging by the number of dead dogs by the side of the road on an hours drive to Mexico City I'd say you'd be very lucky to get anybody to do anything about it. They have a surplus of strays so I reckon if he hadn't stopped nobody would have helped that dog.

And yeh, well done Hive13. Dogs are like family members. It always saddens me when I see missing posters.

TYT: War On Drugs In Mexico To Change After Election?

Eukelek says...

A note from the inside:

Things are hot here right now (and dry), even above the Tropic of Capricorn. The PRI (right-wing) candidate, E. Peña Nieto (EPN) is accused of buying his way into the presidency, from rigging opinion polls to bribing or wielding union and corporate power to setting up twitter bot squads trying to manipulate public opinion. A huge EPN advertising presence clearly over the allowed campaign budget is visible as you travel the country.

But people aren´t having any of it and are fighting back, making sure their voices are heard. A video surfaced after EPN visited a prestigious university in Mexico City where he was shouted off campus, where 131 students state they are not paid to voice their opinions from other parties.

The surge of the #Iam132 (#YoSoy132) hashtag and subsequent movement with Worldwide TT rings a-partisan and mostly just anti-EPN and anti-PRI with their corrupt antics. Weekly protests and artistic gatherings are gaining momentum.

A 4th far-right independent party with libertarian views has surged as well, also backed by powerful unions particularly from the social workers and teacher´s unions, they are double-faced and dodgy as hell. Although Mr Quadri is a scholar and has intelligent views, he is very similar to Ron Paul and his view on drugs.

The left-wing candidate AMLO, who claims the current throne and accuses Calderon of election fraud in 2006, will probably win. He has not stated publicly that he will legalize drugs, although he says that if the people can reach more consensus on the issue, that he would go ahead with it, regardless of what the US might think.

Many are optimistic, as I.

I think what I find especialy repulsive about such places is that they have no humility. Its a giant phallus of a city, where wealth and power is flaunted as if it were something sacred. There is no shame in Dubai.
I've only been to San Antonio in the States. It wasn't too bad tbh, I certainly expected much worse from Texas. The US has its problems, but its far from the worst. I felt more discomfort in Mexico driving out of gated community into basically a slum 15 minutes down the road, or spending a month in Mexico City after a couple of Months in the south close to Guatemala.

I told a friend about driving through Texas and looking over across the border at little shack villages and such. He told me that they build those there on purpose to make us feel sorry for them. Yeah...yeah I know.

George Rekers, Anti-Gay Activist, Caught With Male Escort 'Rentboy'

George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist who co-founded the conservative Family Research Council, was caught returning from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort he found on Rentboy.com, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Rekers, who is also a professor emeritus of neuropsychiatry at the University of South Carolina and a Baptist minister, recently testifed against gay adoption in Florida, where he resides.

More... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/05/george-rekers-anti-gay-ac_n_565142.html

During a presentation on research conducted by George A. Rekers, professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina, the presenters noted that “boys and girls adopted by lesbian and homosexual couples show a greater level of stress than that which is already generated by their status as orphans or children abandoned by their biological parents.” They added that this situation “produces diverse trauma and behavioral disorders that can even lead to suicidal tendencies or attempts.”
The symposium in Mexico took place after lawmakers in the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City approved reforms allowing homosexual adoption. Research included in the study by Professor Rekers was the basis for rulings in the state of Florida prohibiting the adoption of minors by same-sex couples.

Rand Paul In '08: Beware The NAFTA Superhighway, Amero

dystopianfuturetoday says...

^Mexico City to Toronto? How boring. I've been to both places, but never in a row. There is nothing remotely interesting between Toronto and Mexico City. I take back all the nice things I said about this super-highway. It's not really "super" at all. Super would be Brazil to Alaska, now THAT would be a super-fucking-highway. Build me a road from Brazil to Alaska and Spain gets carte blanche.

Jesus Loves You (conditionally)

lmayliffe says...

* Beginning with Columbus (a former slave trader and would-be Holy Crusader) the conquest of the New World began, as usual understood as a means to propagate Christianity.
* Within hours of landfall on the first inhabited island he encountered in the Caribbean, Columbus seized and carried off six native people who, he said, "ought to be good servants ... [and] would easily be made Christians, because it seemed to me that they belonged to no religion."
While Columbus described the Indians as "idolators" and "slaves, as many as [the Crown] shall order," his pal Michele de Cuneo, Italian nobleman, referred to the natives as "beasts" because "they eat when they are hungry," and made love "openly whenever they feel like it."
* On every island he set foot on, Columbus planted a cross, "making the declarations that are required" - the requerimiento - to claim the ownership for his Catholic patrons in Spain. And "nobody objected." If the Indians refused or delayed their acceptance (or understanding), the requerimiento continued:

I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter in your country and shall make war against you ... and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church ... and shall do you all mischief that we can, as to vassals who do not obey and refuse to receive their lord and resist and contradict him."

* Likewise in the words of John Winthrop, first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony: "justifieinge the undertakeres of the intended Plantation in New England ... to carry the Gospell into those parts of the world, ... and to raise a Bulworke against the kingdome of the Ante-Christ."
* In average two thirds of the native population were killed by colonist-imported smallpox before violence began. This was a great sign of "the marvelous goodness and providence of God" to the Christians of course, e.g. the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony wrote in 1634, as "for the natives, they are near all dead of the smallpox, so as the Lord hath cleared our title to what we possess."
* On Hispaniola alone, on Columbus visits, the native population (Arawak), a rather harmless and happy people living on an island of abundant natural resources, a literal paradise, soon mourned 50,000 dead.
* The surviving Indians fell victim to rape, murder, enslavement and spanish raids.
* As one of the culprits wrote: "So many Indians died that they could not be counted, all through the land the Indians lay dead everywhere. The stench was very great and pestiferous."
* The indian chief Hatuey fled with his people but was captured and burned alive. As "they were tying him to the stake a Franciscan friar urged him to take Jesus to his heart so that his soul might go to heaven, rather than descend into hell. Hatuey replied that if heaven was where the Christians went, he would rather go to hell."
* What happened to his people was described by an eyewitness:
"The Spaniards found pleasure in inventing all kinds of odd cruelties ... They built a long gibbet, long enough for the toes to touch the ground to prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles... then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive."
Or, on another occasion:
"The Spaniards cut off the arm of one, the leg or hip of another, and from some their heads at one stroke, like butchers cutting up beef and mutton for market. Six hundred, including the cacique, were thus slain like brute beasts...Vasco [de Balboa] ordered forty of them to be torn to pieces by dogs."
* The "island's population of about eight million people at the time of Columbus's arrival in 1492 already had declined by a third to a half before the year 1496 was out." Eventually all the island's natives were exterminated, so the Spaniards were "forced" to import slaves from other caribbean islands, who soon suffered the same fate. Thus "the Caribbean's millions of native people [were] thereby effectively liquidated in barely a quarter of a century". "In less than the normal lifetime of a single human being, an entire culture of millions of people, thousands of years resident in their homeland, had been exterminated."
* "And then the Spanish turned their attention to the mainland of Mexico and Central America. The slaughter had barely begun. The exquisite city of Tenochtitln [Mexico city] was next."
* Cortez, Pizarro, De Soto and hundreds of other spanish conquistadors likewise sacked southern and mesoamerican civilizations in the name of Christ (De Soto also sacked Florida).
* "When the 16th century ended, some 200,000 Spaniards had moved to the Americas. By that time probably more than 60,000,000 natives were dead."
