TED Talks: What Inspires James Cameron
I'm sure you didn't mean it as such, but I'm taking this as a compliment.
Financial success does not equal success is my book, and if I can avoid his FAIL by even a fraction, my life will have been a major success.

Wow he was a scientist and an artist as a child. How precocious!
and humble too.
Fail
Your greatest success in life will never amount to a tiny fraction of his fail.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Science Fiction Movies
No matter what you say about James Cameron, dude can sell popcorn.

The punchline makes this a great watch. Very interesting that James Cameron went ahead and swapped out the sky. Big props to him for that.
Avatar and Pocahontas - Two movies using one storyline?
Yeah, it's well known. There are so many movies you can say Avatar ripped off, but for some reason, no one seems to suggest they ripped each other off...
There's Pocahontas, Fern Gully, Dune, Dances With Wolves, Firekind (an old comic), The Jesus Incident (another Frank Herbert story), and many more, I'm sure.
So, either Avatar stole the original idea from every single one of these movies/books/comics, or you sort of have to concede that the story is so generic and basic that it's been done and will be done again and again. Avatar just happens to do it really well (and the 3D doesn't hurt a bit ).
If you look hard enough, you'll find similarities everywhere. Examples:
Star Wars - Young warrior joins band of freedom fighters and leads them to victory over the big mechanical empire.
The Matrix - A computer programmer disconnects from the machine he's been hooked up to all his life, discovers he's The (chosen) One and goes on to free his band of freedom fighters from the big mechanical empire (this time with actual machines).
I'm sure I can go on, but this post is long enough, and I've made my point

Lame. Couldn't find a replacement either.
People Depressed That Avatar Isn't Real
All should listen to James Cameron interviewed by NPR. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123810319
Too much talk here about what and what is not depression. The bigger picture is our ability to become one with our environment. This is not a new concept, in fact it's ancient, but one that has been forgotten and in some cases supressed by those that wish to contol others.
The link above could help people understand that the movie was inspired by what we can be as humans. So the idea is to inspire us to pursue making Earth a Pandora. The beauty of Pandora was inspired by what is real here on earth. The communication between the Na'vi and the environment is also possible by humans. Just a matter of looking within and blocking out the urban clutter we're all bombarded with every day. Read Celestine Prophecy, look into Reiki and various forms of meditation.
Best movies of 2009 (Cinema Talk Post)
Moon - I had never heard of it, saw a blog posting by Dag, checked it out, and it's now a favourite of mine.
Avatar - great film by someone named James Cameron. You may have heard of it.
District 9 - racial themes are always fun.
The Hurt Locker - really enjoyable for reasons I still don't know.
Invictus - my homeboy Morgan Freeman delivers again.
