Sears takes inventors idea all the way to China

rottenseed says...

Sweden. I'd have the Swedes put together my widgets. It's not cost effective, but I'd like to knock them down a peg.>> ^bobknight33:

It appears that SEARS ripped off this dudes idea.
As a side question:
If you were a CEO of a company and had to decide where to make your widget where would you make it? In the USA or China?

No CEO at SEARS has that choice. They're a publicly traded company.

Making a moralistic appeal to SEARS is the same as making a moralistic appeal to your computer when it crashes.

10 Accidental Inventions

bamdrew says...

My favorite of the list is Greatbatch, and his story really gets to the value of inspiration and curiousity as an inventor. He was just making a device to record heart beats, and put in an incorrect resistor for his circuit, resulting in a oscillating blip in his recordings. Instead of going 'fuck! I made the goddamn thing wrong! So I threw it on the grooooound!' No he said, 'Woah, thats neat, I have sort-of a built-in time guage that is very regular in my recordings, and can see how irregular the heart beat is ... wait a minute...', and then proceeded to work on the completely crazy idea of an implantable, miniature device to electrically stimulating the heart to keep it beating evenly as people just walked around.

I'd argue that its basically impossible to accidentally invent something. You have to be bright enough to recognize something interesting, and curious enough to follow it off in the direction it leads.

Steve Jobs knew how to get the most out of people. He knew how to inspire people. He knew how to manage and utilize people for maximum benefit. He knew when to steal an idea and how to make it work. He was not an inventor; he was a cunning and ruthless business leader and people love and hate him for it.
Anyone who says Steve Jobs was "just" anything is a fool. You may hate what he did, but he was damn good at it.

What is that supposed to mean exactly? When I hear that he was really good at what he did I'm not sure just what it is that I'm supposed to be getting from that statement, am I supposed to respect him for that? Charles Manson was really good at getting other people to commit murder for him, should he get my respect too? After hearing more about Edison I think that it's a pretty good comparison, they both hired a lot of smart people to work for them and then they both took all the credit for themselves, although it's probably partially our own fault as well, as a society we do love putting people on pedestals.

My only point is that all the arguments that amount to him being in the right place at the right time, as if he had nothing to do with his or Apple's success and just stumbled into a pile of talent and went along for the ride, are nonsense.

Watch something like Triumph of the Nerds and you'll see those supposedly exploited Apple employees praising him for bringing out their best. Was he a pompous gasbag? Yes. Did he have a way of inspiring and driving people to new heights? You bet your fucking ass, he did.

You don't have to respect him but to pretend that being a leader like Jobs isn't a skill... well, if it's not, why aren't you surrounded by geniuses who make you rich?

Well, to be fair he was really exploiting the american consumer for big bucks. The chinese workers got paid the same if they were making iGadgets or xBoxes. It's the consumers that got raped.>> ^Yogi:

The worst, worst possible thing you can invent is something that saves lives.
For the people whose lives will be saved, it'll be great; but for you, the inventor, the problem is the people whose lives aren't saved.

Mormons Bury Kitten Alive In Concrete

I think he was trying to say that if the assholes in town force all the good natured people out, it will cause the collapse of that town faster because there will be no mediating force to balance things out. It will just be horrible people doing horrible things to each other not accomplishing anything good.

That's kind of the plot of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Instead of staying in 'civilization' having the mob of idiots tear apart their creations and perhaps themselves, the intelligent inventors, engineers, artists etc.. all leave and go to live in a hidden utopia where they are free to be excellent and create incredible things that improve the lives of everyone around them.

If I was living in a place were my neighbours were threatening or attacking me, and they were beyond reason, I would leave too. It's a really nice idea that the 'good' people stay in a community and fight to make things better, all the power to them, personally though I would have no interest in becoming a martyr. Just my 2 cents.>> ^A10anis:

Whether it was morons or assholes, they are the worst people imaginable. I'm not a pacifist or a vegetarian but in my heart I feel that someone has to be seriously messed up in the head to harm a kitten.
Also I have to agree with Cenk here and I don't often. This is similar to my theory that if you're gay move to the coasts. If your town is full of complete morons, leave. Just leave do whatever it takes because it could seriously ruin your life one day if you stay. Get the Fuck out of that town. It's basically the Ayn Rand theory, but a bit different, the more intelligent, kind, and tolerant people leave these horrible places the faster they will collapse.

First, I cannot see the correlation between being a pacifist or a vegetarian to animal cruelty (one could be all three). Second, I cannot see your "theory" as viable. What evidence is their that abandoning your home to the mob brings about their collapse? I would argue that throughout history people have striven and fought, from within their community, for what is right and just. These are/were brave people who we have to thank for many of our freedoms. Simply walking away from a bully is not an assurance that he will stop.
