Zero Punctuation - EVE Online

BicycleRepairMan says...

I never play mmo's but Eve had a free trial once, and I've never been so bored in my life. it was absolutely the most boring things I've ever done, and I sat through the entire Pearl Harbour movie that has Ben Affleck in it.

Racists-not blue collar white voters-are Obama's bane

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I think I might have harboured some latent racism in my early 20s. I read that book "The Bell Curve" and it made me think jeez- maybe there is something radically different about the brains of different races. The Bell curve said that Asian IQs were a bit higher, African a bit lower. It's since been repudiated as a bunch of statistical garbage - but some of it had sunk in.

Then I read an article on why humans have different skin color which blew me away. It's all to do with melanin and vitamin D. In Africa where you don't need a lot of clothes- brown skin blocks most of the radiation and you get the right amount of melanin all over your body.

In places like Norway- where you are wearing a big parks- you have to get the maximum amount of radiation you can get from your exposed skin, which is very little- so brown skin loses in favor of white skin that can absorb the sun in a more concentrated area.

Over the years, people with white skin in cold areas were selected for through evolutionary processes. (I suspect brown skinned people in Norway would suffer more vitamin deficiency related disease).

That's all it is - that's the basis of our skin color differences - when you understand that, racism goes out the window. Sources? You want sources? bah.

Cops Beat Tibet Protesters In Front Of United Nations, NYC

Kreegath says...

I'm not saying the protesters were anything but peaceful, but what I am saying is that without any warning to the police, how are they supposed to know it's a peaceful protest? It's not like they're mindreaders.
Getting a permit for a protest isn't just about getting permition to voice your freedom of speech, a permit as I see it is first and foremost for making sure this doesn't happen, to make sure the police knows it's a peaceful protest and can in advance prepare to let it continue as best as possible. The same holds true for getting a bonfire permit, a mass rally permit, an inner city race permit and just about anything else that will cause havoc if unannounced. However, if the protesters did intend on turning their march into some kind of stunt and set up the police for bad publicity, this would surely be the way to do it.
I think we're forgetting that the police officers in this video are ordinary people doing their job just like us, and to suddenly have a huge mob of people causing havoc will surely stress someone out beyond belief. Then if the mob didn't intend on causing havoc really doesn't enter into it if you're the police officer in charge of maintaining order in that district, with no prior notification you'd be damn hard pressed to get things under control with no time to go and get information as to the nature of the approaching mob.
What I saw in this video concerning the policemen's behaviour is overreacting, yes, but surely not any real abuse of power. With the risk of sounding like a pessimistic jerk, how sheltered must we be to see this as police brutality? The harbour policeman is one thing, this is not the same in any stretch.
They lost control of the situation, and the taunting and heckling barrage from the protesters sure didn't help. The police officer making the verbal threats did apologize apparently as honestly as possible when the situation was starting to get under control, which is yet another reason why I'd be inclined to side with the police in this matter.
If indeed they didn't get a permit, it's incredibly irresponsible to first set up and execute such a large protest without mentioning it to the authorities, as it not only would interrupt the flow of the day for the city populace, but also intentionally make things harder for the authorities to do their jobs.

Project Details:
"Lines of Defence", when installed on 15th January 2005, consisted of 38 flags in five lines, each one meter apart, positioned on the eroding cliffs 60 m. south of Martello Tower W, East Lane, Bawdsey, Suffolk.

Letters on the flags spelled out SUBMISSION IS ADVANCING AT A FRIGHTFUL SPEED, a text sourced by Simon Frazer for its reference to climate change and the essentially fearful reaction which prompts people to go to war.

A camera was positioned at Martello Tower W, looking south towards the harbours of Felixstowe and Harwich. The tower is less than 10 m. away from the cliff's edge and is the focus of a local campaign to fund sea defences. The camera recorded the progress of the work by taking one image every 15 minutes from 15th January 2005 to 15th January 2006.

The final flag fell from the cliff on 16th September 2005; making the loss of land 14 metres in the first 8 months of 2005. At this point along the coast a total of 17 metres eroded in one full year. To mark this spot one white flag was placed 17 metres from the cliff's edge on 6th January 2006.

Improbable Collapse: The Demolition of Our Republic.

MINK says...

salvage what argument? like i said, this isn't debate team. we didn't start with rules and a motion. you don't know what i think. and i have conceded points only in an attempt to move things along, it doesn't mean i think your proof is either convincing OR doubtful, it just means i don't consider those points to be critical to the universe.

you can put the burden of proof where you like, not everyone will agree. seeing as governments are always lying and are supposed to work for us, imo the burden of proof is on them, actually. trouble is, they have no credibility, hence plenty of room for conspiracy theories.

and while we argue, more people die in a war that only very few people are profiting from, which would have been politically impossible were it not for a "pearl harbour".

the money trail is quite good proof actually. look at who's rich and powerful, see how they got their money, bingo.

or you could thoroughly examine all the remaining bits of structure BEFORE recycling, and publish a report about it. but nahhh, it was a big building, that would take ages, right? so maybe don't bother? just do a little report and then ask the conspiracy theorists to use the remaining weak evidence to challenge your convenient conclusion.

so tell me, where did that molten metal come from? it's a reasonable question i think.

Scottish National Party Election Broadcast - "It's Time"

"it borders on offensive at times"

I accept that some Scots harbour a rather nasty deep-seated resentment of all Englishmen - and I'm against this. But there are historical reasons for the existence of this widespread resentment, and furthermore you only have to listen to the moronic prejudiced ramblings of gorillaman - who won't even acknowledge that Scotland is a seperate country with its own culture, traditions and languages - to realise that plenty of Englishmen still hold equally prejudiced and distasteful views about the Scots.

"one-issue, isolationist"

Firstly, the SNP are not a one issue party. While in the past some of them could have been accused of being one issue politicians, the party has grown into a fully fledged party with a comprehensive set of policies. Secondly, the SNP advocate independence, not isolationism - An independent Scotland would be a member of the EU and would work closely with Britain.

To the most Holy Father and Lord in Christ, the Lord John, by divine providence Supreme Pontiff of the Holy Roman and Universal Church, his humble and devout sons Duncan, Earl of Fife, Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, Lord of Man and of Annandale, Patrick Dunbar, Earl of March, Malise, Earl of Strathearn, Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, William, Earl of Ross, Magnus, Earl of Caithness and Orkney, and William, Earl of Sutherland; Walter, Steward of Scotland, William Soules, Butler of Scotland, James, Lord of Douglas, Roger Mowbray, David, Lord of Brechin, David Graham, Ingram Umfraville, John Menteith, guardian of the earldom of Menteith, Alexander Fraser, Gilbert Hay, Constable of Scotland, Robert Keith, Marischal of Scotland, Henry St Clair, John Graham, David Lindsay, William Oliphant, Patrick Graham, John Fenton, William Abernethy, David Wemyss, William Mushet, Fergus of Ardrossan, Eustace Maxwell, William Ramsay, William Mowat, Alan Murray, Donald Campbell, John Cameron, Reginald Cheyne, Alexander Seton, Andrew Leslie, and Alexander Straiton, and the other barons and freeholders and the whole community of the realm of Scotland send all manner of filial reverence, with devout kisses of his blessed feet.
Most Holy Father and Lord, we know and from the chronicles and books of the ancients we find that among other famous nations our own, the Scots, has been graced with widespread renown. They journeyed from Greater Scythia by way of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pillars of Hercules, and dwelt for a long course of time in Spain among the most savage tribes, but nowhere could they be subdued by any race, however barbarous. Thence they came, twelve hundred years after the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, to their home in the west where they still live today. The Britons they first drove out, the Picts they utterly destroyed, and, even though very often assailed by the Norwegians, the Danes and the English, they took possession of that home with many victories and untold efforts; and, as the historians of old time bear witness, they have held it free of all bondage ever since. In their kingdom there have reigned one hundred and thirteen kings of their own royal stock, the line unbroken a single foreigner.

The high qualities and deserts of these people, were they not otherwise manifest, gain glory enough from this: that the King of kings and Lord of lords, our Lord Jesus Christ, after His Passion and Resurrection, called them, even though settled in the uttermost parts of the earth, almost the first to His most holy faith. Nor would He have them confirmed in that faith by merely anyone but by the first of His Apostles -- by calling, though second or third in rank -- the most gentle Saint Andrew, the Blessed Peter's brother, and desired him to keep them under his protection as their patron forever.

The Most Holy Fathers your predecessors gave careful heed to these things and bestowed many favours and numerous privileges on this same kingdom and people, as being the special charge of the Blessed Peter's brother. Thus our nation under their protection did indeed live in freedom and peace up to the time when that mighty prince the King of the English, Edward, the father of the one who reigns today, when our kingdom had no head and our people harboured no malice or treachery and were then unused to wars or invasions, came in the guise of a friend and ally to harass them as an enemy. The deeds of cruelty, massacre, violence, pillage, arson, imprisoning prelates, burning down monasteries, robbing and killing monks and nuns, and yet other outrages without number which he committed against our people, sparing neither age nor sex, religion nor rank, no one could describe nor fully imagine unless he had seen them with his own eyes.

But from these countless evils we have been set free, by the help of Him Who though He afflicts yet heals and restores, by our most tireless Prince, King and Lord, the Lord Robert. He, that his people and his heritage might be delivered out of the hands of our enemies, met toil and fatigue, hunger and peril, like another Macabaeus or Joshua and bore them cheerfully. Him, too, divine providence, his right of succession according to or laws and customs which we shall maintain to the death, and the due consent and assent of us all have made our Prince and King. To him, as to the man by whom salvation has been wrought unto our people, we are bound both by law and by his merits that our freedom may be still maintained, and by him, come what may, we mean to stand.

Yet if he should give up what he has begun, and agree to make us or our kingdom subject to the King of England or the English, we should exert ourselves at once to drive him out as our enemy and a subverter of his own rights and ours, and make some other man who was well able to defend us our King; for, AS LONG AS BUT A HUNDRED OF US REMAIN ALIVE, NEVER WILL WE ON ANY CONDITIONS BE BROUGHT UNDER ENGLISH RULE. IT IS IN TRUTH NOT FOR GLORY, NOR RICHES, NOR HONOURS THAT WE ARE FIGHTING, BUT FOR FREEDOM -- FOR THAT ALONE, WHICH NO HONEST MAN GIVES UP BUT WITH LIFE ITSELF.

Therefore it is, Reverend Father and Lord, that we beseech your Holiness with our most earnest prayers and suppliant hearts, inasmuch as you will in your sincerity and goodness consider all this, that, since with Him Whose Vice-Regent on earth you are there is neither weighing nor distinction of Jew and Greek, Scotsman or Englishman, you will look with the eyes of a father on the troubles and privation brought by the English upon us and upon the Church of God. May it please you to admonish and exhort the King of the English, who ought to be satisfied with what belongs to him since England used once to be enough for seven kings or more, to leave us Scots in peace, who live in this poor little Scotland, beyond which there is no dwelling-place at all, and covet nothing but our own. We are sincerely willing to do anything for him, having regard to our condition, that we can, to win peace for ourselves.

This truly concerns you, Holy Father, since you see the savagery of the heathen raging against the Christians, as the sins of Christians have indeed deserved, and the frontiers of Christendom being pressed inward every day; and how much it will tarnish your Holiness's memory if (which God forbid) the Church suffers eclipse or scandal in any branch of it during your time, you must perceive. Then rouse the Christian princes who for false reasons pretend that they cannot go to help of the Holy Land because of wars they have on hand with their neighbours. The real reason that prevents them is that in making war on their smaller neighbours they find quicker profit and weaker resistance. But how cheerfully our Lord the King and we too would go there if the King of the English would leave us in peace, He from Whom nothing is hidden well knows; and we profess and declare it to you as the Vicar of Christ and to all Christendom.

But if your Holiness puts too much faith in the tales the English tell and will not give sincere belief to all this, nor refrain from favouring them to our prejudice, then the slaughter of bodies, the perdition of souls, and all the other misfortunes that will follow, inflicted by them on us and by us on them, will, we believe, be surely laid by the Most High to your charge.

To conclude, we are and shall ever be, as far as duty calls us, ready to do your will in all things, as obedient sons to you as His Vicar; and to Him as the Supreme King and Judge we commit the maintenance of our cause, csating our cares upon Him and firmly trusting that He will inspire us with courage and bring our enemies to nought.

May the Most High preserve you to his Holy Church in holiness and health and grant you length of days.

Given at the monastery of Arbroath in Scotland on the sixth day of the month of April in the year of grace thirteen hundred and twenty and the fifteenth year of the reign of our King aforesaid.
