Obama Speaks Candidly on Unknown Open Mic

That's one thing we can agree on, my Libertarian leaning friend. Get the troops out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, South Korea, Okinawa, Pine Gap ... the list goes on. >> ^blankfist:
They didn't propose to cut enough, IMO. Though really they need to start with defense spending and work from there.

Troops already ARE moving out of Germany :-) That causes lots of problems btw, whole cities heavily depend on providing infrastructure for US forces. We're getting real "ghost towns" (i.e. neighborhoods) because huge areas and numbers of houses etc. were hired out to US government via xx-year contracts. Some cities have hundreds of empty apartments (still hired by US gov while uninhabited) while affordable places for students etc. are lacking.

Nevertheless i'm a fan of US pull out of troops, never understood why they're here in the first place after WW2 and later the cold war were over. Plus: it must cost the US gov a SHITLOAD of money providing for the tenthousands of troops in Germany alone.

I'm on Terenas, trying to get my ol'peeps back together. It's like a ghost town, everybody is raiding or honor whoring. If you do play on there look me up as Vanily or my user (yogurtforthesoul).

I wasn't busting your chops, I just didn't know what the black flag stood for, so I wikied it and posted it on your page.

I support your switch to pure anarchism, but don't most anarchists reject 'free-market'-y type stuff?

Need more people in the unsifted page (Sift Talk Post)

ant says...

>> ^evil_disco_man:

It's been this way for a while, which is why I think the default setting should be "Newness" instead of "Hotness." That way all videos are seen equally - ones that start off with quite a few votes already get noticed more, anyway. I know the Hot setting makes the front page look more attractive to the general public, but it doesn't really benefit the regular posting/voting members here.
Anyway, it IS much more important that members take the time to go through Unsifted. Even worse, Beggar's Canyon is a freakin' ghost town now. Begging used to be able to get you 3-5 more votes occasionally, but now you'd be lucky to get 1 or 2. Seems worthless to use a Power Point that way. Maybe a beg should send the video through Unsifted for another day or two, instead.

Or random by default. I do newness by choice.

G20 protester snatched off the street by unmarked car

spawnflagger says...

Ok, I'm from Pittsburgh, and I can tell you that a vast majority of the cops were brought in from elsewhere, as well as a vast majority of the protestors & anarchists were not from Pittsburgh. Yes there were more cops than protestors. Perhaps it was an over-reaction, but it was based on the precedent of events in London and Seattle. Many of those brought in were national guard. I can't speculate on who wears what kind of camo/fatigues - most were dressed in dark gray & black riot gear. From the video (no where near downtown) I would guess that they targeted this particular individual, and just removed him out of the crowd to the police line that was 50 ft away. I couldn't see any plates or lights on the car - most undercover cop cars are easy to spot, so this might have been a civilian vehicle.

Personally I was disappointed that there were so many cops, yet the anarchists got away with breaking so many windows. (this was probably because most of the cops were in the downtown area, and most of damage was in other neighborhoods outside of downtown). What point are they trying to prove? "ooh, I'm 19 years old and being repressed by the evil government, so I'll get back at them by breaking windows of a local business!!" Unless your goal is to provide work for local window replacement companies, it's pointless.

But in the end there were several peaceful protests as well (much larger turnout than you see in these videos), and no major damage or injuries, so it's probably better to err on the side of caution.

The channel 11 news (nbc) interviewed the girl who was on video from the previous night getting arrested for throwing her bike at the riot cops. Now that was entertainment... What did she think was going to happen?

Also, I disliked all the reporters comments about how downtown turned into a ghost town for 2 days - well that's what happens when the secret service quarantines a 16 block area and nearly every road in and out of downtown. All the businesses closed because it's too much hassle for employees and customers to even get there.

Ricky Gervais On David Letterman 7th January 2009 HD

Film Recommendations In Poster Mosaic (Blog Entry by Farhad2000)

blankfist says...

Great list, Farhad. I'm certainly adding some of those suggestions to my NetFlix queue. I hear The Wrestler is amazing, and Rourke gives his best performance. That's a lot of hype to live up to! In Bruges was a surprisingly good flick. The trailers mislead me into thinking it would be like a Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels type movie, so I didn't want to see it at first.

I wasn't a fan of Ghost Town. It was a chick flick wrapped in a comedy. Gervais was great in it, though. And, Slum Dog Millionaire was great, but I think it was hyped too much. It's not Oscar worthy in my opinion. [/two cents]

Dubai goes from Booming to Bust Almost Overnight

cybrbeast says...

I've always had this fear of Dubai becoming one of the most impressive ghost towns in the world. With all that super high value property, I was always wondering who is going to live there, are there even enough rich people to fill all that property? But one hears that these properties sell out in days, well apparently not to people who are going to live there, but to investors.
We'll see how this works out. It will probably settle if the crisis doesn't last too long. Remember the Empire State Building was finished during the Great Depression and got the nickname the Empty State Building, but it seems to have worked out in the end.

Of all those, the only one I've seen is Ghost Town and I can second the recommendation. The critics seemed a bit unkind to it, but very unreasonably so, as it was a very enjoyable experience for Charms and me. It had quite a few more laughs than your typical romantic comedy and often zags where you expect it to zig. As you might expect, Ricky Gervais is a laugh riot.
