Pretty horribly designed harbor, looks like there are no, hell, what are they called in english, they are "wavebreakers" in finnish...(too tired too google)..I'm living in a coastal town too, that just look stupid.

Dry. Finnish, born and raised. They say the people inhabiting Finland originally came from somewhere around modern day Mongolia, which may lend support to your Asian theory. OTOH, that would have been some time around the last ice age, or shortly thereafter, with significant mixing with other, European, elements up to this day.

My Spanish is close to non-existent, but to paraphrase it says something along the lines of:

The Finn takes advantage in the first meters and appears to be prevailing. However, the Belgian mid-career recovers and manages to cross the finish line first with his arms raised.

In reality, the two men both won, with the two solo contests of different categories of the 60 meter dash in the same race: Pauwels, of over 90 years, and Koppinen the age of 95.

The Belgian achieved a time of 17.70, while the Finn crossed the finish line with a time of 17.89.

Hopefully it'll never come to that. Not because I dislike English as a general rule, but any language where the words you write only bear a passing semblance to how they're actually said out loud isn't a good, practical basis for a world language. What I mean is that almost every letter that's used in the English language can be pronounced in several different ways depending on what the surrounding letters are, or even written the same but depending on how you pronounce them can mean different things (heteronyms like for example bass the fish and bass the instrument/frequency). Then there are silent letters and all sorts of weird combinations of sounds.

The best basis for a proper world language would include at least a writing system where for one thing each letter in the alphabet directly corresponds to a specific sound and is always pronounced the same way (e.g. Japanese hiragana and katakana for example, or the Finnish alphabet), but also takes into consideration stuff like being syntactically unambiguous, the counting system being geared towards working as smoothly as possible with the SI-system, among other things.

English isn't that great of a language from a usability standpoint at the end of the day, the only thing it really has going for itself is that it's popular, but so is Chinese...

They sell Jaffa cakes in that sized box? I can only ever find the individual packages here in the States, and that's when I can even find them at all.

That's it. I'm moving to England. Would you take in an anglophilic Yank? Is anglophilic even a word? I promise to leave any bad "American" behaviors here (minus my inability to use a dictionary).

Usually yes.. Back 1999 new year, we were on a backbag trip thru eastern europe, filming the whole thing to 8mm and with one of the new award winning Finnish document producer on the camera, he leaned over the window, started doing a slow pan shot and once he got it and started to climb back in, a powerpole swush past his head, it was literally just 1 or 2cm... we check the situation and they were really going only 15cm from the train.. This was in Poland, Warsaw-Bialystok line (i think, could've been in Lithuania too)... No doubt they have increased margins since.. We almost lost a great talent.
