Climate Change: What Do Scientists Say?

newtboy says...

What do real scientists say?
...the one's he worked with all said Lindzen is totally wrong, and his views are not held by the vast, VAST majority of other scientists that actually work in climatology. He's a political shill now, working for 'conservative think tanks' to deny climate change.

https://insideclimatenews.org/news/06032017/climate-change-denial-scientists-richard-lindzen-mit-donald-trump

Note, his graph at the beginning that appears to show no significant rise because as usual they start in late 97-98, a super hot El Nino year (the hottest on record) typically used as a starting point to pretend that temperatures aren't rising as fast as they are. Start at any other time to see how different the results are. This graph contains the hottest 15 years in recorded history over a period of the last 19 years. That's pretty telling by itself.

1)the climate is always changing-but according to natural cycles, we should be in a cooling period, not a warming period.
2)so at least in his mind, everyone agrees CO2 is a greenhouse gas that causes warming...that's better than most deniers.
3)"little ice age"-During the period 1645–1715, in the middle of the Little Ice Age, there was a period of low solar activity known as the Maunder Minimum. The Spörer Minimum has also been identified with a significant cooling period between 1460 and 1550 (it was not caused by low CO2 levels), and CO2 is produced more in warmer temperatures than cold, so starting shortly after then you can claim the CO2 levels have been rising since well before the industrial revolution...which cherry picked like that may be technically true but is again misleading by starting at an unusually low level following a low level solar period, but the level of that rise has consistently risen since the industrial revolution, and is incredibly higher than any natural mass releases besides rare massive super volcano eruptions that caused mass extinction events.
4) just plain not true, and not agreed on by scientists.
5)What they actually said-
Improve methods to quantify uncertainties of climate projections and scenarios, including development and exploration of long-term ensemble simulations using complex models. The climate system is a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore the long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible. Rather the focus must be upon the prediction of the probability distribution of the systems future possible states by the generation of ensembles of model solutions. Addressing adequately the statistical nature of climate is computationally intensive and requires the application of new methods of model diagnosis, but such statistical information is essential.

Confident prediction of future weather is not possible, weather predictions are based on statistical probabilities too. Because they aren't perfect doesn't mean they're wrong, useless, or should be ignored until they're 100% right every time. More funding for more study will improve the predictions consistently, but we are intentionally defunding them instead.

Religion channel? As in the religion of climate change denial? That's not what that channel is.
Philosophy channel? What?
Learn channel, only if the viewer looks into his BS elsewhere to learn the truth.
Lies, yep...controversy, yep....politics, yep....conspiracy,OK. His ilk are steeped in those, but you left out money, the driving force for all the deniers controversial, political lies and crazy conspiracy theories. ;-)

El Niño is back. Here's how it works.

poolcleaner says...

El Nino causes coral bleeching? That's when the symbiotic algae that gives the coral its color dies off. In the long run, those reefs bleeching out will die off and that will cause more long term problems in those oceans. Fuuucking BABY JESUS!

Climate Change; Latest science update

newtboy says...

New, just released ocean temperature data has shown a dramatic increase in temperatures in the Northern Pacific, and a dramatic decrease in surface temperatures in the Northern Atlantic. As I understand it, those readings are not consistent with normal 'El Nino' patterns. Could this be the beginning of the end of thermohaline circulation? If that happens we'll be facing unavoidable, unpredictable, worldwide, disastrous climate change in short order.
Without the current created by the thermohaline circulations, the oceans die. Equatorial waters become much hotter...fast...and arctic and Antarctic waters become much colder...fast. Ocean organisms can't live through that kind of change, not in any sizeable way anyway. Without the oceans, the entire food web dissolves and we die.
On top of that, without the currents bringing oxygen to the lower oceans, they become anoxic. The bacteria that live in those deep waters will feed on the dead sea life and create toxic gases (hydrogen sulfide) which have, in the past, completed the extinction events by wiping out nearly all life. Once that starts, it's unstoppable and is the end. Let's hope these readings are just an over active El Nino.

What we do today has little to no effect for 50-100 years. That makes us at least 50 years too late to solve this problem, and we are still exacerbating it rather than solving it to this day.
We're hosed.
If you plan on having children in this climate, you are a child abuser IMO, and are adding to the problem with that one action more than almost any other action normal people perform. Your children will most likely not survive to old age, and absolutely won't experience the same quality of life you have.

I AM EL NINO!

It hailed. This is what happens in deserts when it rains or in this case hails... The US will probably see a lot more of this type of thing in the news from the monster El Nino that is coming our way.

IF YOU USE CONDOMS YOU WILL NOT BE RAPTURED

From now on I would like to be referred to as "The 5th Polar Bear of El Nino".

I like his logic - if you don't want an STD - don't use condoms.

Normal Weather Patterns, OR GLOBAL WARMING?!?

KnivesOut says...

Both of the meteorologists in your example are straw men, especially if you can't provide quotes/links to any real meteorologists saying those things. One says it's all climate change, the other says its all El Nino. The experts in the video didn't say either.

Could there not be something in between that is closer to the truth?

Let's Talk Global Warming (Nature Talk Post)

acl123 says...

Until China overtakes America as the worlds worst polluter, both overall and per capita, the rest of the world is still waiting on America to be the one to initiate real action. When will America lead the way in environmental issues? Ask yourself which countries lead the way now in renewable energy, more efficient motoring, strong environmental political policies, real debate in the media etc. 30 years ago you could have answered America, but not any more. Now the world leaders are Japan, Germany and other European nations.

America is by far the scariest and most dangerous country in the world right now - responsible for the most dangerous wars and the most dangerous pollution. America has shipped their worst polluting industry overseas to China and India, and tried to shift the blame at the same time, but the market remains at home. Why is the American public, including the usual vocal internet community, so quiet about environmental issues?

As for recent cooling, lets just say that any article that talks about cooling in the past few years but fails to mention La Nina or El Nino should be taken with a very large grain of salt.

Here are another few interesting that appeared in the Australian.
