TED - David Blaine: How I held my breath for 17 min

mentality says...

@Fade:
pssst, magic isn't real.

Pssst. Magicians aren't actually trying to do real magic.

anyway you bringing up magic is meaningless in this context. This was a stunt. Nobody but you is claiming that this was magic.

It's quite relevant since Blaine gained fame through his magic specials, and his stunts are often televised along with his magic performances. Besides, you're not the only one to engage me in this conversation about magic in this thread. But I agree, Blaine has morphed into more of a stuntman lately.

@gwiz665:
And to me holding your breath for 17 minutes means you're in league with some dark forces for certain.

The problem I find with all these stunts is that when David Blaine does it, he gets huge publicity because he is a celebrity, and when other people do bigger and better things, nobody gives a f*. For example, Tom Sietas beats Blaine's record not long afterwards. Does he get a TED talk even though he's been breaking static apnea, static apnea w/ O2, and dynamic apnea records for years? There's so many feats of human accomplishment out there. Do they all need David Blaine to make an attempt before they get some recognition in the media?

Maybe I'm just too cynical about our celebrity obsessed culture.

I did indeed. I tried to respond to that whole "is this magic" argument that was going on, and I couldn't very well call David Blaine "technology"

And to me holding your breath for 17 minutes means you're in league with some dark forces for certain.

Any sufficiently advanced feat is indistinguishable from magic.

I hope you're misquoting Arthur C. Clarke deliberately for the lulz, and not actually trying to be serious =P

Derren Brown - Staring Contest

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

Ornthoron says...

I've always been a PC gamer too, but I've played a lot less since I started sifting. Go figure. I thoroughly enjoy the Half-Life series including Portal, but in my heart I'll always be a point-and-click adventure gamer. I've played most of what LucasArts published back when they were good, such as Full Throttle, The Dig and every Monkey Island game. I'm excited about the new Monkey Island game that's coming up, and the remake of the first game. And Grim Fandango is obviously a huge favourite, as you can tell from my avatar.

The last decade has been a sad period for the adventure genre, but Telltale Games has some good stuff going now, i.e. with the new Sam&Max episodes. I also loved The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall, and am eagerly awaiting a new sequel. (Do you hear that, Funcom?) I'm a sucker for good storytelling, so I might expand my horizon to Mass Effect, which I've heard good stuff about.

Another good adventure game that I think has been overlooked is the Bladerunner game from 1997. It captures the mood from the movie brilliantly, and was very replayable due to the non-linear storyline.

A few years ago I bought a PS2 solely to be able to play Guitar Hero, and I got to be rather good at it. But I haven't played it since GH3 now, and I am a bit rusty. After I bought the console my flatmate pressured me into trying Final Fantasy 10, and I enjoyed it for a while until the grinding part became too pronounced. I might continue it some day though. I also bought Bioshock when it came out, but I haven't gotten very far, as I found the character building stuff annoying. I have promised myself to play through it, though.

Other highlights from my gaming career: Diablo 2 and the expansion, the single player campaign of Starcraft and the expansion, Jedi Knight (aka Dark Forces II) and its sequels, Tie Fighter, Carmageddon, Interstate '76, and Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

Olbermann Defends Mancow from the Right

"The agenda-- There's dark forces behind this. I really believe this. Forget the truth. A lot of people, Democrat and Republican alike, have banked on this not being torture."

"You say whatever your party tells you to say. Left wing radio says what they're supposed to say. Right wing radio follows their talking points. And frankly I'm sick of it."

This is all interesting coming from a conservative radio personality.

Congratulations.

There's much to be done in your kingdom aka channel, milady.

First you must patrol the slumbering realm under your influence, maximizing sift production to strengthen our economy.

second, you must forge an alliance in order to contend with the darkest of evil. Be wary of the malice that dwells within King farhad2000, for he is with no mercy, and with his dwindling manhood grows jealousy and spite of others success.

But no worries. With loyal allies besides you, we shall defeat the dark forces, and bring en end to obscurity.

Ron Paul re: "FEMA Concentration-Camp" Lie with G. Beck

volumptuous says...

Here's Ron Paul's words:

"I don't think all the answers are in"

"I think there's justified concern"

So, he supports the idea that maybe something is there, and he appears on Beck's TV show to talk about this, and this is not him promoting this idea?

And let me know if I'm wrong, but during Katrina, wasn't FEMA the group who was the least effective as opposed to the most Orwellian? And how does appointing the head of the Arabian horse association somehow dictate the principles of FEMA?

If you remember, it was the Air Nat'l Guard who were allegedly confiscating weapons, and locking down city sectors, not FEMA. Then Bush's FEMA led by the exact-opposite person who should have been in charge, horribly failed, and you want to not blame Bush's retarded appointment and completely absent response plan, but some secret dark forces that FEMA operates under? That's why Katrina sucked?

Sorry, but this FEMA concentration-camp conspiracy has been debunked for almost twenty years, and don't you think that an elected official --one who many regard as incredibly intelligent-- should know this, as opposed to me, some ordinary internet loser?

Wait, what?

This needs to be a level in a new FPS. Or a game in itself!!

There's a level in "Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II" where you're on a ship that is plummeting to the surface of the planet and you need to find a way to get off it. As it falls, it's rolling and twisting which means the level is basically rotating as you're trying to escape. Sometimes you're running on the walls, sometimes on the ceiling, sometimes you wind up free-falling down the hallways. Oh, and stormtroopers are still shooting at you as you try to escape. And stuff is sliding around too, so you have to avoid being crushed. It was bloody brilliant. I still contend that game had the best level design of all time.

Police arrest Amy Goodman at RNC (what police state)

choggie says...

uhhhhhhh, background?? What occurred??? Amy Goodman occurred, and continues to raise the hackles of the Nazis in control..
She started her career as just another , easily labeled "liberal" public radio nobody, now in the national spotlight beginning to peel layer after layer of the onion of dark forces behind the facade, is beginning to expose the people behind the people you think is running the show, and it makes these non-humans want to sacrifice children and and drink the blood of innocents....
some of Amy's work that has caused her to be put on several "lists":

She sees the forest for the trees....do y'all???

She has become braver and stronger, but you can see the toll it has taken on this soldier, in her eyes is much pain and frustration-she's on the front lines of exposing the hidden power structure and their ultimate agenda, and this is more evidence, we are getting close to some major event in the time-line of NWO, and major power grab-Look to the Asians and their cabals as well to flex,...they know full well the determination and will of the elite white boys, and the lengths they will go to secure empire has no moral or spiritual compass guiding it.....to the We's all caught in the middle???....well, chess was a game played by kings in the past, still is, and there are more pawns on the board expendable than needed for end game....

Wake the fuck up...

Star Wars Retrospective - Part 6

Star Wars Retrospective - Part 6

ponceleon says...

It is really interesting. I remember Dark Forces just being absolutely awsome. That said, I remember when the original Jedi Knight came out, I was a bit pissed off about it because I felt it was a cop-out to make Katarn a Jedi. In the original game, he was basically a Han Solo clone without having to be Han Solo. Solo isn't a Jedi and I felt the were just kind of desperate to include a light-saber...

Still, I did play Outcast and it was another awesome game. I remember thinking that it was some of the best light-saber action in any game...

Crosswords says...

Aside from the Doom sharware version, Dark Forces was the first FPS I ever played, I spent many a hour playing and replaying it. Jedi Knight was pretty good, the live action cut-scenes while on the cheesy side, were kind of a neat gimmick, outcast was great as well they really refined the force powers and lightsaber work. I never played academy, I think I had the demo, but never gave it a shot.

One of the things that I really liked were all the different environments. Being set in a universe where faster than light travel was an every day occurrence gave a good opportunity to design levels that were more than just creeping through corridors that were all pretty much the same.
