Daylight Saving Time 101

ChaosEngine says...

Jesus, do I really have to explain this?

You advance your clock by an hour DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.

DST is the *change* from your standard timezone. Otherwise you wouldn't touch the clocks all year. There's no "winter time". That's just the end of DST.

cryptoz said:

lol, ok dude you keep advancing your clock an hour and leave it at that.

What do you mean "one part"? There's only one part to DST.

"Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that in the evening daylight is experienced an hour longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times."

cryptoz said:

not sure what you mean "keep it all year" but I think it means you like one part but not the other so in the end your "meh"

You have now. DST is awesome. I love having an extra hour in the evenings. I can go for a bike ride, meet up with friends, have a bbq.

Quite frankly, I'd keep it all year.

Figures National Geographic would make this. I don't know anyone nor have I met anyone that says "I like DST"

Daylight Savings

Zawash says...

Yup - it's easy to mix them up. If we were still on daylight savings time it would get dark even earlier in the winter. Up north it is noticeably less dark in the morning when we have just gotten off DST.

An as for the DST itself: Get rid of it, folks. Burn it. Burn it with fire.

It's easy to get them mixed up but daylight savings time causes more daylight in the evening; we're saving it for later. Remember we just got off daylight savings time, and that's part of why it gets dark so damn early in the winter.

But of course, during the summer, when DST is active, up north we don't need it, as the day is long enough as it is.
Which is why Island doesn't bother.

The Problem With Time and Time Zones- Computerphile

Can't you (or shouldn't you) rely on the OS to handle this stuff? Seems a bad idea to put this functionality in your own program where it then has to be continuously maintained by you.

Ultimately, as the planet continues to get functionally smaller, we all need to shift to UTC and no DST. Everyone who doesn't live in GMT will just have to get used to sunrise at 11:00, lunch at 17:00, and sunset at 00:00 or whatever the local equivalents are.

My team at work has people in EST5EDT, GMT, AEST, and CST. My company also has people in IST, CET, MSK, CST6CDT, MST7MDT, PST8PDT, etc. And, of course, we have customers in every populated time zone on the planet. It's a constant pain in the ass to be doing these conversions.

"Pepper" Katehi speaks at UC Davis Rally

marinara says...

yeah @DST
Her speech was pretty much you have to trust me, and give me more weeks in charge.
I didn't even hear an apology.

To @lantern, no the kids weren't blocking a road, they were on a sidewalk.

Is pepper spray violent? Try pepper spraying an unsuspecting cop, then tell me if it's violent or not.

And what is neglected in this video is that if you live way north, like here, it really doesn't matter anyway since it's either dark during most of the day in the winter or bright in the summer.
So all DST really does is move when it's slightly less bright at midnight by an hour.

Choggie kicked off the Sift again? (Wtf Talk Post)

enoch says...

i agree with you DST and i stated as much.
i am not defending his words nor his actions.i disagreed with his tactics and have told him so on more than one occasion.belittling or berating someone whose view is different from your is not conducive for a productive discussion.
what i did speak about was his intent, which was never to be as destructive as it was received.
now this may be due to the fact that choggie and i never had words.
we had disagreements and i would call him on blatant ruses and shenanigans.he never tore in to me..i usually got a chuckle out of him.
even if he did tear into me..who cares?
that is what an ignore function is for.i would never use that function because that just ruins the fun..but that is me..others may be more sensitive to disparaging remarks and maybe they should utilize the ignore function more often.i cannot speak for others.
the other item i addressed was the collective myopia.it does not sit right with me to put blame on a person where it should not lay.the very things some people are complaining about..after the fact mind you...are reactions to choggies hyperbolic commentaries.
ok..i think it is apparent that choggie deserves that for his personalized attacks, but what about those who do the very same thing but in a different form and fashion?
it is hypocritical to point the finger at a man and say "you made me feel like such and such by saying this or that" while at the very same time making others feel just as marginalized and outcast.
does it really matter if the vehicle was polite and cordial if the results are the same?
i can hit you with a tempered steel hammer or a cloth covered baseball bat..either way i am breaking your skull.
see what i am saying?
choggie is responsible for choggie.
he made a deal and broke the terms and people complained forcing dag to end the agreement.
that is the reality.
i am just gonna miss his voice.
i dont have to agree with everything he says to do that..do i?

Maddow- Why Daylight Saving Time?

entr0py says...

Personally I think it's all daft. We have circadian rhythms that have been honed by nature over millions of years, and habits that most comfortably match it. We don't need Mr. Franklin coming along and telling us we're all idiots for not getting to sleep at 9PM and waking up at 5AM. Then creating a law to force us to sleep the way he does. If he were on a more sensibly denominated bill I would tear one up in rage.

And I suspect Ms. Maddow is truly confused. DST means you are forced to go to sleep earlier, and get up earlier. If you like staying up late, you're being screwed. I think what she likes is really just the longer days that come with summer. And somehow thinks that messing with the clocks is what causes that.
