Insane Forest Fire Footage Fort McMurray
Sheesh, brings back memories of the Canberra Firestorm.
American Helicopter (Osprey) Fail at the G20 in Australia
This is the official Australian position on climate change, at least the one held by the nincompoops in Canberra.
Funny Australian protest due to Abbott leaving climate change off the agenda at G20
Januari (Member Profile)
It was 10pm, in Canberra, and there was one other senator present as well as the speaker. I've put a link to a newspaper report on the speech back in the video comments.
I didn't know there was an American Green Party... do they hold many seats? I've only ever heard the U.S. described as a two party system.
@oritteropo
For clarification, from where is he speaking and to whom?... the room seems entirely empty.
Also it sounds very much like the American Green Party.

Canberra would count as *downunder if there weren't already 7 channels.
Australian bus racists abuse French woman [w/ commentary]
Do we ever.
It's nowhere near as powerful as in the US, and doesn't have the same fundie dimension. But the ideology is about the same. Likewise the number of nutters.
And just like in the US, it's largely an exercise in astroturfing (here it's led by the mining companies). In the absence of a partisan cable news network, radio shock jocks do the job of Fox News.

Gina Rinehart calls for a small Australian wage cut

For me, and this may not be the exact definition of productivity - but productivity is the cost of getting shit done.
Anyone who has been to the dentist, tried to re-roof their house or start a small business would probably agree that it's pretty expensive to get stuff done here.
Which isn't to say that I don't like how things work here. I like big public services and don't begrudge the high taxes. I like that there is a huge middle class here.
But ... And this is the part that's going to get me some flack, there is a certain softness that comes with a 5% unemployment rate. We feel very entitled to the jobs we have - because there is no one else waiting in the wings to do them for us. Employees have a huge leverage stick here in Canberra because there is literally no one else willing or available to fill the roles.
Lastly, I want to make it clear that I'm not defending the awful views of this lady.

Ok Dag, you got an independent reference for your productivity comment, or is that just based on your observations? Because the only people I see proclaiming that Australian labour has low productivity are people like Rinehart - rich people who would benefit from paying people less. I have seen no good evidence of low Australian labour productivity.>> ^dag:
To be fair - I didn't hear her say that Australians should be paid $2 per day.
And this might sting my Australian mates - but productivity is low in Australia. I'm in Canberra - which is probably low productivity HQ for the whole country.

@dag yep I'm sorry, I have a real super hate for her, and of course why I skewed the title. I have bias, and sincerely wish no offence to you or anyone pointing that out (sincerely).
I exaggerated the title.

P.S. She can go fuck herself

What do they use instead? I remember this discount grocery store in the little college town I went to that didn't use bags. Stuff was dirt cheap too. They put out the empty boxes that the stuff was delivered in for you to use. I always thought that was a cool idea.
>> ^dag:
Those kinds of bags are banned here in Canberra.
>> ^lucky760:
^They've also just been banned in Los Angeles.
Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags. If they don't, paper bags may be purchased for 10 cents apiece.
