Canadian lawmaker blames his absence on tight underwear

blahpook says...

The puns keep going here.

"I'm sure the NDP would much rather be riding up in the polls."
"Pat Martin a victim of wedgie politics?"

Martin himself weighs in: "I kind of got caught with my pants down. Winnipeggers never like to play full price to anything. Fifty per cent off is like catnip to a Winnipegger, believe me."

Misconceptions about getting sick - mental_floss

Misconception #8, regarding efficacy of the flu shot, is not so cut and dry:

The flu vaccine may also not be as effective for the elderly:

I have nothing against vaccinations for the more serious illnesses like polio, etc - these vaccinations are effective and important. I'm just not so quick to buy into the flu-shot.

How Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers stopped Ottawa shooter

CrushBug says...

The only thing that I think is not getting enough air time, is the other officer that was shot during this. Const. Samearn Son.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ottawa-shooting-gunman-s-movements-caught-on-video-but-security-questions-remain-1.2810673

"Const. Samearn Son, a 10-year veteran of the Commons security team, was the first person to try to stop him, sources have told CBC News.

Son immediately noticed the long rifle in Zehaf-Bibeau's hand.

Although he was unarmed, Son lunged at the shooter, grabbing the gun and pulling it toward the floor, screaming "Gun! Gun! Gun!"

That alerted the plainclothes officers inside the building, who have weapons. During the ensuing struggle, Son was shot in the foot. He was taken to hospital later in the day, and released that night, but with a permanent souvenir — the bullet will stay in his foot, sources say, as it would do more damage to remove it."

Totally proud of Kevin Vickers, but it takes a lot of balls to jump on an armed suspect bare handed.

Shootout in Parliament Building

bcglorf says...

Canadian here. Our national news coverage on CBC has a comments section that is... terrifying. The top 3 liked comments are all decrying the Canadian Prime Minister for causing this and making Canada a target through his participation in the fight against ISIL. Are people truly that stupid or are there troll bots upvoting stuff like that?

Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who designed the creature in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic Alien, has died at age 74 from injuries suffered in a fall, his museum said Tuesday.

Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, western Switzerland, told The Associated Press that Giger died in a hospital on Monday.

Giger's works, often showing macabre scenes of humans and machines fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors and inspired an enduring fashion for "biomechanical" tattoos.

"My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."

Jon Stewart Skewers Toronto Mayor, Again

Godless says...

Mmmm... I've been reading about this story in several Canadian newspapers and watching different news shows from different allegiances and in both official languages (Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, La Presse, CBC, CTV, so on) and they're all pretty much saying the same thing Stewart is saying. So go ahead and tell us, please, what's REALLY going on. I'm dying to know.

Smoking crack while making "racist and homophobic comments."

News Orgs in the U.S.: From their tired playbook, their standard-issue ammunition of disinformation and diversion includes race-baiting, derogative argument (in place of discussions involving critical thinking), and of course, red-team/blue-team side-taking, allll to feed the illusion the viewer creates from fantasy, that they have a fucking clue whats REALLY going on.

Anti-fracking Native protest 'wins' against riot police

notarobot says...

Unfortunately things aren't so simple.

My understanding is that the land in question is traditional Native land which was never surrendered to Canada.

Rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada and lower courts have established a duty to consult and accommodate aboriginal people when development is considered on their land, even non-reserve traditional lands. This was either not done, or wasn't successful.

There is also some suspicion that one of the individuals who set fire to the police cruisers is an RCMP informant. But I haven't found satisfactory evidence of that yet. If true, it would not be the first instance of police provocateurs infiltrating protests in Canada.

bcglorf said:

I'm gonna give the knee jerk Canadian perspective. I may change my opinion after looking closer. From what I currently understand, the land being worked on is owned by the Canadian government, not the protesters. The police arrested protesters that were preventing work from being done. The protesters then set fire to several police cars.

This is ugly and not really sure what more the police/gov were expected to do?
