GOOD BYE CRUEL SIFT! (Blog Entry by rottenseed)
>> ^rottenseed:
Just hang around for the bad...the storm will clear and you will see the sun again. Every spring and summer has a winter. And the autumn? Well the autumn is meaningless preparation for the winter. Fuck the autumn, it's as useless as the "n" at the end of its name. It's a fence-sitter season. We should just extend summer and winter so that we don't need an autumn.
wait...what was this about again? Oh yea, stop pussin' out 'cause you had to experience the ugly side of keeping this site fun. It's painstaking and not for everybody but if you don't like that part of it, there's always the videos...
If only I had a gun
"But there is no way to perform a double blind test, what the fuck do you tell the shooter? It's impossible. How can you adequately mimic the behaviour of a psychopath? Any person you send in to do that job will do it unflinchingly and with as much speed and clinical precision as their skill would allow."
Simple answer for this one... Take one of the students, even one of them with gun experience and tell them to enter the room and shoot as many people as possible... a realistic goal for a killer. Don't tell them another person in the room has a gun. Once they are hit once or the gunman gets hit, trial over. Do this a few times with a few groups, then compare it to a like study where no one in the room except the gunman has a gun. Look at the numbers and you've got a good study. Science gods appeased. Demonstration valid... and still scary.
"* Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense."
To be fair, that number is likely an overestimate:

The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Vol. 86, No. 1 (Autumn, 1995), pp. 150-187 http://www.jstor.org/stable/1144004?seq=2 :
"...research has consistently indicated that victims who resist with a gun or other weapon are less likely than other victims to lose their property in robberies and burglaries. Consistently research has also indicated that victims who resist by using guns or other weapons are less likely to be injured compared to victims who do not resist or who resist without weapons."
"With regard to studies of rape, although samples typically include to few cases of self-defense with a gun for separate analysis, McDermott, Quinsey and Upfold, Lizotte, and Kleck and Sayles (citations in linked article) all found that victims who resisted with some kind of weapon were less likely to have the rape attempt completed against them."
I found that in ten minutes... Apparently ABC had fewer than 10 minutes to look?
Here's a book I found but can't yet vouch for, still:

The Corries "Flower of Scotland"
http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/flower-of-scotland.html (free mp3 too!)
O Flower of Scotland
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for
Your wee bit Hill and Glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now
And Autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
That stood against him
Proud Edward's Army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.
Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward's Army
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Interesting Acoustic Properties at Chichen Itza (4 seconds)
I spent a summer living in Merida so I've been there a number of times. On the Spring and Autumn equinox, at the rising and setting of the sun, the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent - Kukulcan, or Quetzalcoatl - along the west side of the north staircase. On these two days, the shadows from the corner tiers slither down the northern side of the pyramid with the sun's movement to the serpent's head at the base. There are also 91 steps on each side and then the one platform at the top to account for the 365 days of the year (the fact that they knew this in the ~11th century is damn impressive).
They also built this 30 meter-tall pyramid without any load bearing animals, metal tools, pulleys, or the wheel.
One of the most beautiful Dutch songs ever: Het Dorp
Babel Fish translation, not the best but...
They leave the country one by one
To go itself from there to earn their living
Far from the ground where they were born
For a long time they dreamed some
City and of its secrecies
Formica and movies
The old men that were not original
When they essuyaient machinal
Of a reverse of handle lips
But they knew all by the way
To kill ruail or young partridge
And to eat divides into volumes it goat
However that the mountain is beautiful
How can one think
By seeing a flight of swallows
What the autumn has just arrived?
With their hands above their heads
They had assembled dry stone walls
Until the top of the hill
What imports the days the years
They had all the well born heart
Knotty like a vine
The vines they run in the forest
The wine will not be drawn any more
It was a horrible nasty wine
But it made centenaries
With more knowknowing to only make some
If it did not turn you the head
However that the mountain is beautiful
How can one think
By seeing a flight of swallows
What the autumn has just arrived?
Two goats and then some sheep
One year good and the other not
And without holidays and exits
The girls want to go to the ball
There is nothing more normal
To want to live its life
Their life they will be cops or civils servant
What to wait without being done some
That the hour of the retirement sounds
It is necessary to know what one likes
And to return in its H.L.M.
To eat chicken with the hormones
However that the mountain is beautiful
How can one think
By seeing a flight of swallows
That the autumn has just arrived

I'm guessing fourteen. You can see the transition points clearly in most cases by watching the lighting, but the creator does a very good job of blending between scenes. There were a couple in the summer that were very short, but the autumn was stretched out to catch the leaves as they changed.

Cal, this is a wonderful song, I am quite familiar with it. Sam Beam is a brilliant song writer.

If you go to the man's site, there's a jukebox with several songs that will loop for you: http://www.ironandwine.com/
One of them is called "16 Maybe Less" and, vin, I'm going to threadjack for a minute here. There's no good video of that song but like I say you can go listen to it and I'ma post its lyrics right here. It made drunken Calvados sappy one night.
http://lyricwiki.org/Iron_%26_Wine:16,_Maybe_Less
Beyond the ridge to the left, you asked me what I want
Between the trees and cicadas singing round the pond
"I've spent an hour with you, should I want anything else?"
One grinning wink like the neon on a liquor store
We were 16, maybe less, maybe a little more
I walked home smiling, I finally had a story to tell
And though an autumn time lullaby
Sang our new-born love to sleep
My brother told me he saw you there
In the woods one Christmas Eve
Waiting
I met my wife at a party when I drank too much
My son is married and tells me we don't talk enough
Call it predictable, yesterday my dream was of you
Beyond the ridge to the west, the sun had left the sky
Between the trees and the pond, you put your hand in mine
Said, "Time has bridled us both, but I remember you too"
And though an autumn time lullaby
Sang our new-born love to sleep
I dreamt I travelled and found you there
In the woods one Christmas Eve
Waiting
