First Look Trailer Of Gervais' New Series 'Derek'

probie says...

I got onto a Ricky Gervais kick about 2 years ago. Watched The Office, Extras, listened to all his XFM broadcasts, his audiobooks, Guide To's, watched An Idiot Abroad, etc.. The problem I have with seeing him play Derek is due to the face he makes; I've seen him do that face too many times in other media (Extras as Mr. Stokes for example) so I keep expecting him to break character at any moment with that trademark laugh of his. It's so disconcerting that I have trouble suspending my expectation of it, so that I can actually see and enjoy the character.

I'll watch the show and I'm sure it will be a hit. But I don't think I'll be able to enjoy as much as someone who's new to him.

If you go to liveleak link and click "Get Embed Code"

it should popup the code to copy and paste

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=5ea08505836a" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Dunno if that will work, I'm not sure about a lot of the embed codes, but that should work.

I know to get the liveleak embed code you just click "Get embed code" under the video and it gives the code to copy and paste.

Thanks.

I am pretty computer illiterate -- when I copy the code noted, the Sift says it is "invalid."

Do you know how to get a good embed out of it?

It's all greek to me....

Either way, thanks.

HARDtalk - Alan Moore

Porksandwich says...

@cosmovitelli

Tried to untangle that mess of comment strings into something that looked right, but gave up ...looks like a big jumble for what comes out of it.

Anyway I was referring to my wondering if authors and such try to ignore other mediums covering their material so they don't end up changing their perspective on their writing/whatever. TVs and movies in particular strip away a lot of the nuanced stuff in the stories to give you the core in a more "actiony" way.........but that's not what the original fans liked about the books (maybe)....so being influenced by the movie you might overlook the nuances.

Game of Thrones tv show does a really good job on the books, but those things are massive...there's just a lot of stuff happening in the books that would make the TV show too hard to follow since it's not conducive to stop and go back over and over to remind yourself whose who and what's what. Hell with how dense the books are, you can't be sure of what they are leaving out until you get further into the season....to see if they wrote around a character or place. I've been wondering if the Tv show production hasn't changed Martin's writing in the last book and maybe even the book before it..because they were very slow and not very good in comparison to prior books which fit a lot more happenings into one book than he had in two massive books.

Or Dresden Files, I don't know if Jim Butcher ever watched the TV show on it or listens to the audiobooks that Marsden narrates. But Marsden reading Dresden books really changes the book for me versus just straight reading it. Often wonder if he writes with Marsden in mind since he's so popular as a narrator or if he ignores all that stuff.

What are you reading now? (Books Talk Post)

Petition to Apply Affirmative Action to the Basketball Team

chilaxe says...

@longde

1. What do you mean Asian Americans don't experience discrimination? They're demonstrably racistly discriminated against as a matter of official policy.

2. Most Asian Americans aren't Hmong, and the group averages are still true. Feel free to stop making references to Whites, Latinos, or Blacks, since those groups have much variance within them, and then we can finally make affirmative action based on income instead of self-reinforcing tribalistic concepts.

3a. Everybody has to develop their human capital if they want to be skilled in advancing in the business world. I read a dozen books (or audiobooks) per year on how to do it, and I think about it constantly, trying new things, writing down my thoughts, and improving on my (many) past mistakes.

3b. People can use anything as a crutch, and when something goes wrong, which is a constant part of life, they attribute it to that crutch. They then won't develop their full potential. We should probably have affirmative action based on height, beauty, and likable personality (if you believe in affirmative action), and if we'd rather be born as Will Smith (Hollywood's highest paid actor) than Paul Giamatti, these are more significant crutches than what sub-culture we belong to.

TEDx Caltech -- The Arrow of Time with Sean Carroll

IAmTheBlurr says...

I love Sean Carroll! I was just at one of Skeptic Magazine's CalTech lectures with Sean in January. It was great! His book "From Eternity to Here: The Quest of the Ultimate Theory of Time" is pretty damn good. It uses a lot of diagrams to help illustrate some of the complexities of the subject and I highly recommend it, BUT, I don't recommend the audiobook because you loose all of the diagrams and the narrator is very dry.

His wife, Jennifer Ouellette, authored "The Calculus Diaries: How Math Can Help You Loose Weight, Win in Vegas, and Survive a Zombie Apocalypse" which I also highly recommend.

He and his wife are really cool!
