Bill Maher Compares Glenn Beck to L Ron Hubbard

Drachen_Jager says...

We're not laughing. If it was Zimbabwe or Peru we might be laughing. But the country with the greatest economic and military influence in the world, not to mention the largest nuclear arsenal. Not very funny.

Arsenic-based life form discovered on Earth

GeeSussFreeK says...

Right, I understand that. What I am saying is DNA is just "A" condition of life, not necessarily "THE" condition of life. The sample size is small, only the planet earth, of which all life is supposedly related. Who says life has to exists as cells even, or matter? It is a huge universe, who knows what other possibilities are out there! Crystalline entity, I'm talking about you! *uhg, quote fail*

>> ^Ornthoron:

DNA is still very much a part of these bacteria. The difference is that some of the phosphates in the DNA have been replaced by arsenates. See Gallowflak's link above for a more detailed explanation.

Duke Nukem Forever ACTUALLY coming out!!! (Videogames Talk Post)

The PC port is only going to let you carry 2 weapons at a time like the console version. A lot of people are trying to convince gearbox to release a mod package with the PC port to allow customization of the game so that Duke can carry the full arsenal like in the prequels.

See, I don't get that sort of whinging on people's parts... Have they played it yet? No. Have they taken into account the gameplay mechanics that work with the two weapon limit? No. All they want is what they're used to... where's the fun in that.

Sure, if you get the game and play it and THEN still find it restrictive and not as fun then sure, it could be modded or patched, but come on people, don't whinge about something you have very little information about.

Countdown to Zero

honkeytonk73 says...

The government wants you to be afraid, because you will focus your attention on the threat of a perceived vague shadowy 'enemy' rather than what your own government is doing under your nose. Be afraid, vote for candidate X. Nothing motivates a voting body than an insecure voter. Notice how the enemies are always ill defined constructions. A "them" vs "us" concept. We will defeat "them", when the very definition of 'win' cannot be defined.

Terrorists are everywhere. They are all over. They want to get you and your family. We quickly forget that far more people die every year from common disease, cancer, car accidents, food poisoning, starvation, and even genocide.. than terrorism. Sure terrorism is horrific. But so is neglect of the now parent-less child starving in a ditch as our war machines drive by to claim a stockpile of oil from the 'enemy'.

The governments of the world tell you that the nuclear threat is always 'the other guy', they neglect to mention their own huge arsenal contributing to global instability. The governments pat themselves on the back for reducing nuclear stockpiles. Meanwhile they don't tell you that the stockpile reduction was from old/defunct stock. The 5000 nukes of last decade, have been replaced by 100 devices, with each single new device holding enough firepower to eclipse the entire stockpile of the last decade. So much for disarmament. So much for peace. So much for supporting a nuclear weapon free world.

The greatest threat to a peaceful and just world is ourselves. Greed and power rules us. Our human nature. Our tribal nationalistic xenophobic tendencies. To forget that we are all human at the core. The same. No matter what language we speak or what clothes we wear.

HOT NEWS: Sauna Competition TURNS DEADLY!

This is an idiotic sport, just boxing and MMA.
It's like
Let's see who can get cooked the most before collapsing and nearly dying!
Let's see who can sustain the most brain damage before getting knocked out!
Let's see who can drink the most lead and arsenic without dying!

Might as well have a championship for playing chicken on the highway. It's fucking insane.

Fareed Zakaria Criticizes 'Disproportionate' Afghanistan War

bcglorf says...

This would be like fighting Italy after WWII... just because Italy had been allied with Germany.

I'd quite simply argue it is instead like fighting Italy during WWII because Italy was allied with Germany.

The entire problem is because everything has been spun into unrecognizable gibberish by the time it gets near the media, let alone the public. The advocates for staying in Afghanistan use Al Qaeda as shorthand for Islamic jihadists, because that makes it easier for the ignorant masses to follow. Further still, at the "Great Game" level nobody cares over much about a safe haven in Afghanistan for Islamic jihadists. The real concern is a safe haven for jihadists along Pakistan's border. The former head of Paksitan's ISI, that the US and nearly all muslim countries paid to form the jihadist armies that ousted the Soviets is Hamid Gul. He currently is an outspoken supporter of the Taliban's jihad, and formerly said the following in response to concerns about their formation "We are fighting a jihad and this is the first Islamic international brigade in the modem era. The communists have their international brigades, the West has NATO, why can't the Muslims unite and form a common front?" He's still very influential in Pakistan, and he is hardly alone. The jihadist's campaign prior to 9/11 had been garnering support within Pakistan's government, and they had made big strides. Since 9/11, when Pakistan's government responded to western pressures to reverse course, the jihadists have begun efforts to destabilize Pakistan instead. If they can't gain absolute control of the nations nuclear arsenal, instability and civil war within a nuclear state they hold tremendous sway in will also serve their needs.

And there you have the problem. Actually talking about the REAL situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan is simply far beyond the attention span of the people. They don't have the time to even hear the basic facts, let alone form any kind of opinion. So instead, the media provides them with unrecognizable pablum. It's like choosing between the steak and the lobster, but the only taste test you get is baby food jars of pureed steak and potates, or pureed lobster and spinach.

Why Switzerland Has the Lowest Crime rate in the World

peggedbea says...

i love switzerland, like alot. it's one of my favorite places on the planet to go. and i'm eating a piece of toblerone right now.
but, the title is bullshit. and there is more to freedom than the ability to defend yourself. and there are more tools in an arsenal for self defense than just guns. its safer to walk around just about any given european city than just about any given american city at night because of the poverty rate.

keep it shortsighted though boy.

Duke Nukem Forever - April 2010 Gameplay Video

videosiftbannedme says...

The only thing that kept me rooting for Duke was hopes that the multiplayer would rival the original game. Some of my fondest memories of deathmatch still come from Duke3D. I miss the wacky arsenal and multitudes of ways you had to kill your opponent. I want a really good deathmatch game again, not just the same ol' shootem up, with the same tired array of cliched weapons.

Regardless the outcome of the lawsuit, the only way Duke could save face now is if he came back as a zombie...because this franchise is deader than a doornail.

Michael Moore on Afghanistan: Get Out and Apologize

bcglorf says...

I've got to hand it to Michael Moore, just when you think he can't say or do anything dumber, he finds a way to go further.

If you want to find a meaningful documentary about the strategic importance of Afghanistan start by throwing out every last one that doesn't spend 90% of it's time on Pakistan. Why do all the idiot boy talking heads like Moore(and his equally stupid Republican counterparts) insist on acting like the greatest prize in the war is the desolate wastelands of Afghanistan itself? Here's a newsflash for everyone, American throne makers NEVER cared about control of the deserts of Afghanistan!

Here's what they did care about, the stability and reliability of the government of Pakistan and it's nuclear arsenal. That's the game. Before the war, Al-Qaeda and it's Taliban jihadist allies were spread from Islamabad to Kabul, with strong ties and connections to the governments all along the way. After 9/11, America's highest policy makers decided that Pakistan's official fence sitting between support for those that bombed New York and those that died there was no longer acceptable. Musharraf was given an ultimatum, them or us, and he was given an example of the consequences of siding with them when the Taliban chose them. Since then, Pakistan has been waging an internal war against the Taliban militants rather than openly supporting them. Their war is a direct mirror of the war in Afghanistan against the same opponents.

I'd absolutely love to see Moore try and explain why we should apologize for fighting the same forces responsible for killing the first and only elected female head of a Muslim state. I'm sure her widow, now leading Pakistan, would be so glad to receive a delegation of Moore and his film crew there to apologize to him for our solidarity with the cause his wife died for. Disgusting.

Fantastic Fluoride

ButterflyKisses says...

I found some videos by the ADA that also promote the use of fluoride. Although they also don't show any empirical data, they advocate seeking additional fluoride intake if you drink bottled water that is not fluoridated or if you live in an area that is not fluoridated.

http://www.ada.org/public/media/videos/minute/index.asp#fluoridation

One strange arugument they pose is that fluoride is a naturally occurring element in water. I find this strange because there are many naturally occurring elements in water that I wouldn't want to increase my intake of.. such as arsenic, lead, magnesium and radon. While fluoride is helping my teeth, I wonder if it could be harming my other organs and bones based on all the products that use fluoridated water and the fluoride in the public water supply (it seems like it might be too easy to inadvertently take in too much). After all, it's more toxic than lead - which has been banned in the use of products. I've also learned that if the fluoride is unrefined from it's capture process in fertilizer plant smoke stacks then it also contains lead and radons. This doesn't necessarily make me refute the use of mass non-consentual fluoridation. It only makes me question the quality of fluoride that is being used.
