Shattered Horizon - Zero Gravity FPS

xxovercastxx says...

Shattered Horizon... not plural.

Like Westy said, there's been quite a few zero g shooters already. Descent, Forsaken, Terracide, Magic Carpet and pretty much all of these have done this shtick for decades. I think even Duke 3D, or one of its expansions, had anti-gravity levels where you could run on the walls and ceilings. You can put AVP in there too and the motion in the video above is also very reminiscent of Tribes.

It may yet be a good game, but it's just another take at something the genre has been doing for a long time.

i remember playing the original avp as the marine late one night in the dark.... scared the CRAP outta me. it was so well done, with the long thin corridors that had red lights flashing on/off in sequence and the sound of the scanner.... nothing, nothing, nothing, BAM ALIENS EVERYWHERE AAAAAARGH.

i have very little to offer this conversation, having not seen this movie or casino royale. however i will state to GorgonHeap that i genuinely enjoyed AVP. definitely not the movie of the year, not even on my top twenty, but definitely good.

i didn't even make it a quarter of the way through AVP 2.

It seems like TV has had some good sci-fi series in the past decade; (Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, to name a few). But really it takes another Kubrick, Hitchcock, or Speilberg. Someone who is a master of their directing element. There just isn't a good Sci-fi director out there right now.

Plus the Sci-fi era of film has ended. Heck in the 70's and 80's there were countless numbers of sci-fi 'B' movies. Out of the many there were a few gems. But now days sci-fi is passe, and the only directors that will take it on are the ones who have producers with deep pockets and an endless supply of crappy scripts.

Here is my prediction for the next crappy sci-fi:

Klingon vs. Wookiee. It's like AVP except more explosions.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Trailer

budzos says...

T3 has some really bad goofy humor and poor selection of soundtrack music for a lot of the scenes. They tried to hit too many of the same beats as T2 as far as Arnold's role. Aside from that, T3 is pretty good for a sequel written and directed by someone other than James Cameron, who praised it as a worthy follow-up. The ending has real balls.

This show will suck balls. You can tell just by looking at the ad graphics, which looks like some sort of militarized campaign for The Gap. Maybe I'm getting old but I'm sick of every property suddenly incorporating teens and young adults when formerly they would be dealing with adults. See the recent AVP sequel, which features riveting scenes of high school love triangle drama, just what we've all been waiting for in a movie with aliens and predators in it. I still have hope for T4. They're finally making the future war movie we all wanted to see when T2 came out in 1991.

Omnithrope, I asked the same question, and realized that Silent Hill being number one meant it's sequels as well. I think when it comes in terms of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, they're just picking the first one to represent the entire series.

Also, I never played AvP myself, but I showed the same doubts to a friend of mine. And all he had to say was "No man, it DEFINITELY deserves that spot." It wasn't the fact that you couldn't hear them. It was more or less the fact that the entire Marine campaign you were completely on edge about whether or not something was actually going to come after you. I heard that no other game has ever been able to create such a nerve-racking atmosphere.

Karaidl, I couldn't agree more about FEAR's 'John Woo' style. Also, it's hard to find a game out even still today that can match just how fun the AI was, with their really smart tactics. But it's short-end, in my opinion, that it became too much of a pattern of the same two formulas. Like, there were two different games in one, one that was a smart tactical shooter, and one that was a ghost horror game. It got to the point where it was basically "Okay, this part is a shooter, so I can expect nothing scary to happen here", "This part is scary, so I don't have to expect any bad guys coming around to kill me anytime soon". Over and over, without mixing it up too much. Too formulaic.

If you don't think AvP should be on this list, you obviously haven't played it. Granted, I never played the one on the Jaguar, but the 2 that came out on PC terrified me. It's not just jump-out-at-you scary, either. Some of the most tense moments of gaming I've ever played were spent watching that motion detector and seeing the blip get closer and closer...

Top 10 Scary Video Games

Farhad2000 says...

Eternal Darkness was amazing, especially those sanity effects, the game would make it seem like you are losing your mind the game would make it look like the game would totally switch off, the sound might change, the volume might fall and so on.

I believe the AVP should be there, but definitely not the Jaguar version but the awesome 3D version developed later on by Rebellion. That game really perfectly captured the claustrophobic and pant filling atmosphere of the Alien movies. Best 3D engine for it's time too.

Doom 3, was mostly closet scary as mentioned, I mean by mid way it boiled down to things spawning right behind you. Personally the scary left the building the moment Trent Reznor walked off the project with all the audio he created, it's up online and my god does it add to the feel of the game. Remember what Trent Reznor did with the soundtrack to Quake!
