Member @AdrianBlack has achieved RubyHood and has decided to create a VideoSift channel, as is a privilege that comes with your ruby. Death is the channel AdrianBlack has decided to create.

As the community decided after Wilhelm, all new channels must be put up for community review before approval or denial. Vote above whether or not you feel the death channel should be activated.

I like the channel idea in general. My only concern is that it sounds like it will contain death videos, which are obviously disallowed by the "no snuff" guideline, so aside from those, what types of videos will live in the death channel? Videos just contemplating the subject of death? Death metal music videos?

AdrianBlack says...

I have found that many of my animations deal with death as a theme. The sift has very few 'sad' channels, and many of our videos have the subject of death, the macabre, and other final endings in them - including music about loss of life (death metal works too), and nature 'circle of life' videos.

'Dark' is not enough to classify a lot of my posts, and death seemed to be the largest theme in my collection.
I'm definitely not looking to start posting glaringly obnoxious killing spree videos, as I would not allow those either. I thought that since there is so much life here, we should have the opposite dark, poetically deathly side.
(my attempt at a definition, btw.)

Congratulations on the ruby @AdrianBlack! You are one of the most interesting voices on the Sift, in my opinion.

Death is perhaps the most important aspect of life, so I think it's a splendid channel idea, provided you write up a good channel description and police it accordingly.

*Death to us all!

But, dark doesn't equal death.
>> ^SlipperyPete:
I dunno - despite what you've said, it just sounds like a sub-category of the dark channel.

Sorry - didn't phrase that well. What I meant was that there would at first blush appear to be a large overlap between the two categories. I'm in the camp that new channels should carve out a large swath of videos that cut across multiple existing channel designations.

Is *doublewilhelm taken yet?

AdrianBlack says...

Yeah, I see your point...

Much like 'comics' and 'comedy' is a pretty big overlap,
and 'animation' and 'art'
and 'eco' and 'nature'
and 'religion' and 'islam'
and 'music' and 'electronica' and 'jazz' and 'metal' and 'rocknroll'
and '1sttube' and 'commercials'...

*raises one eyebrow*

personal opinion: okay, but I'm not sure what would go in it... just any art form where anybody dies or ruminates on death, all news clips that mention death,... all Zero Punctuation posts where he wishes the creators of a game were killed... without a clear definition its could be broader than 'dark', because people mention death, dying, killing kind of a lot.

Examples of videos that could fit in a death channel:

Considering that my avatar is named death I can only agree to this channel. Also I think it is sufficiently different from the dark channel to warrant existence... There are a lot of channels that overlap but in my opinion that makes it easier to find and categorize the videos correctly.

kymbos says...

Sure, why not? I post a lot in the 'dark' channel, but they usually have nothing to do with death. They're sufficiently distinct to me. My only concern if I were in charge is that you could end up with a lot of 'eia' type vids which is not what you're after. But I guess if you define it clearly, you could just cull them out.

The term 'mortality' could work, if you like it.

I would be putting this one in, which is one of my favourite ever vids: http://videosift.com/video/Youre-Going-To-Die

Fusionaut says...

To be clear, this will not be a *killing or *murder channel. It will be a *death channel. Death happens naturally too and humans react to it, are fascinated by it, fear it, respect it, create works of art or write songs about it. There needs to be a channel for that!

marinara says...

IMHO, channels should help me browse. If i want to laugh, then comedy.
for example, news channel works real good. If i want to see news, then i click news.

you people just want more channels so that everything has a label. if you want labels then use labels. don't use channels to label stuff.

I guess we don't have labels- we just have crappy titles. but don't get me started on that.

xxovercastxx says...

Yea.

Though I would also implore you to consider another name. One thing that's pretty much guaranteed is after a month, nobody will read the description of your channel and most of the people who did will have forgotten what it said. However they interpret the invocation is what they'll use it for. It's why #drugs and #viral are perpetually misused. It's worth taking the extra time to consider how your channel might be misused or misinterpreted and doing what you can to prevent that.

In the end, it's going to happen anyway, but I'm a fan of proactivity whenever possible. At least give it a best effort.

Deano says...

Mortality might indicate a greater breadth of subject matter involving more than themes of death.

Though Death does seem like a cooler name I can see how it will get misinterpreted over time, particularly when it shows up in google search results.

For the last 363 star points I could have created a channel.

Are all the channel moderators/owners still around? Perhaps inactive channel owners should have their channels put up for grabs by active members who are willing to invest time in them?

AdrianBlack says...

When creating my proposed channel, I came across the message:
"Not available - subdomain is reserved or belongs to another member."

I asked Lucky if I could 'have' it. He said that "Yes, member death only showed up the day he/she signed up and has never returned so there's no problem." (Although, I don't know how they created a channel on the same day they joined, I probably misunderstood that)
Happily, Lucky was gracious enough to let me have a shot. However, I think Hybrid has an excellent idea, let's have a sift channel yard sale!

I think this would be a good place for some Latin. How about *mortis?

The Latin gives it that artistic, abstract flair that I think you're going for, rather than the snuff undertones of *death. Also, some of the people who don't bother to read the channel rules won't actually know what it means, so maybe they'll just overlook it.
