Death Note
It took me a while but I watched all episodes of the excellent anime Death Note.
I just watched the live action part 1 DVD the other night and it was very well done. The next two days, Oct 15 and 16, 2008, there will be a special engagement of Death Note 2 (live action) in theaters at 7:30pm. I'll be watching it Thursday and I'm quite excited. Part 1 was quite a bit different than the anime and added a lot of intensity to an already very intense story.
Death Note is based on a book series and is the story of a boy named Light who finds a Death Note dropped into the world by a God of Death named Ryuk (because he was bored). Anyone whose name is written in the Death Note dies. Light goes on a rampage determined to cleanse the world of all evildoers. He's extremely intelligent, but there is also a genius investigator only known as L working to stop the unknown killer (known as Kira) who is murdering criminals on a worldwide scale. Light and L play a real world game of chess attempting with all their intellect and psychopathic people manipulation skills to deal the final check mate blow to the other.
If you have the time or are into anime I recommend the full series. Otherwise you should definitely check out the live action DVDs.

I like Death Note, it was the first anime series to get me interested in anime almost exactly a year ago. I think it's very well written. The story just grabs you and just doesn't let go. After each episode I could hardly wait to see the next one.
The only thing I didn't like about it though was the end. In my opinion it wasn't as good as the rest of the anime, it just left me thinking "this is how they're ending it?" Maybe I was just disappointed it was the last episode.
I've also seen the first movie and I thing it was ok but not really good. What I didn't like about it was that in the anime I was usually on Kira's side but in the movie that was almost impossible, there he was just evil.
As I said I have been into Anime for almost exactly a year now and have watched a few series. I have liked them all except for one. These are the ones I like: Death Note, Ergo Proxy, Black Lagoon and Elfen Lied. The one that I didn't like is called Zombie Loan. I have no idea why I watched 11 episodes of that. Probably just because it has "zombie" in the title. Right now I'm watching Cowboy Bebop, and liking it.
(wow, that is unusually much text for me. I hardly ever write anything longer than a couple of sentences)

Great. Thanks for the recommendations and your review of Death Note. It's actually the first anime series I've ever seen as well, though I've always been interested and been curious to get into anime.
I'll try to figure out which of your recommendations is best and make that next on my currently empty list.
"I will take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!!"
I'm more of a Kenshin and Lain fan, but Death Note is pretty good.
BTW, Death Not is on Hulu.com in high quality for free, all legalz like.
Cowboy Bebop is pure win.
Death Note was good, kind of got weak during the second half but overall good.
lucky760, I strongly recommend Ghost in the shell: Stand alond complex, and Monster. Kino's Journey is pretty nice too.
I've watched a few episodes on Cartoon Network and watched the 1st DVD through blockbuster online, but Vol. 2-4 are never available, which sucks. I like what I've seen so far. Interesting that there is a live action version, i'll have to check that out.
Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Ninja Scroll (the movie, not the series) are a few of my favorites.
Great Show! A friend recommended it to me about two years ago when it was still only aired in Japan and we had to get a subbed version. I cosplayed (Yes, I am that nerdy) DeathNote that year and not that many people knew the show, but next year there were a whole lot of Death-Noters out there.
Here is photo of the cosplay- I'm Ryuk hugging a random friend (people thought I was guy, it was hilarious) http://www.flickr.com/photos/jwgrote/3023504183/
Another really good dark anime is Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei
Haha! Love that costume. It's so great. You even brought an apple. That's awesome. I'd like to see someone doing L. Very easy to pull off, but fun nonetheless.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll add that to my todo list.
Thanks. My friend Parker was doing L in that picture (he has the chains). The best L I've seen was a friend who has a genetic disorder that made him really skinny and kind of slumped over so he didn't only have a great cosplay costume of L, but also walked like him and really pulled him off very authentically. It was awesome to see him get so much attention from fans since he usually is a pretty shy guy.
