Wow, sk...that now makes perfect sense why it became such a cult adage. It's fun to find out origins of things we take use in our comedy routines. ;-)

It makes you think how many things we take for granted and repeat as "funny" without knowing why.

This came out with all the "population bomb" nonsense which predicted that by the turn of the century (2000), we would be totally overpopulated and people would be running out of food in the world.

Actually, in many western countries that is, obesity from too much food is more the problem.
