Sen. Feingold explains FISA surveillance in 35 seconds

Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) gives a very brief yet poignant explanation about one of the many shortcomings of the FISA surveillance law that Bush insists on renewing.

As a native of Wisconsin, I've always been a fan of Sen. Feingold, and was very disappointed to see he didn't run for the presidential nomination. I can't think of a time I've disagreed with him on policy, and he comes across as somebody who genuinely cares about the people, and not power. The Democrats' Ron Paul, if you will, without all the crazy "destroy all federal programs" ideas.

I've posted this point on another video but I think I'll repeat it here. I have yet to see or hear anyone give a rationale that supports this and shows what we get back in security by severely compromising our 4th amendment rights.

Original FISA law allowed for retroactive approval of surveillance and in fact only a handful of requests have been denied since its enactment. If the argument to be made is that current regulations hamstring the gov's ability to carry out investigations (for example by not being able to approve requests in a timely manner and the time limit for retroactive approval running out), this time limit could be extended.

The only reason to get rid of oversight is if you are planning on gathering intellignce that wouldn't be approved.

Geez, I think we give up even security on this one - what's to say that the government won't use this against you in some unforeseen way?

Even a thought of surveillance without a warrant is very scary. Fight against it with all you have, I don't want to see that kind of shit happen. And even worse, with bad luck it might spread if it gets pushed through.

Its completely rational to support this ObsidianStorm. The government is our friend and trying to protect us, because they told me so. Bush smiles a lot and has a dog, he must be a good guy. Plus the terrorists are all over the internet, they keep trying to sell me replica rolex's and Viagra to fund there evil ways in terrorist cells in every country in the world, even Antarctica, how do I know because it would be the last thing you would expect. Thats how they work, misdirection. While blinding you with unheard of violence in the Middle east they are planning a mass penguin shakedown. Ever wonder why the icebergs are melting...think about it. And just the other day they phished my myspace account those bastards. If you could stop hampering Cheney's ability to have my back then I could upload a new photo album. Worst of all what if someone hacks my WoW account. I mean we need to be able to track these guys for the sake of National Security, they are are all over Azeroth. A ninja just totally screwed me on a piece of epic armor yesterday and thats completely against America. So if you sympathize with ninjas then by all means fight this bill. But as a pure blooded Irish/Scottish/Cherokee/American I stand for freedom and justice and anything else they tell me too, so I ask you who's rationale is truly flawed here Obsidian, not mine
