Renault unveils their new Z.E. (Zero Emission) Concept Car

From WorldCarFans.com, Oct 2, 2008: In the ongoing battle against CO2 emissions, Renault has revealed the Z.E. Concept (’Z.E.’: Zero Emission) electric vehicle in front of its home crowd today. Based on the new Renault Kangoo be bop the Z.E. Concept is powered by a 70kW electric motor with torque of 226Nm and lithium-ion batteries.

The Z.E. Concept is designed to minimize energy consumption without sacrificing comfort-related features such as lighting, heating and climate control. The Z.E. Concept attempts to accomplish this by incorporating heat-reflective paint and insulating bodywork. As a result, temperature fluctuations which normally prompt the use of climate control or heating systems are reduced.

The bodywork functions along the same lines as a Thermos flask. It comprises two insulating panels with a sandwich of air. This air, which is still the most effective insulant known today, limits variations in temperature
between the exterior and the interior of the car. Further insulation is achieved with the use of acid green-tinted glass for the glazed areas. Also, solar panels positioned on the roof power a temperature regulation system.

Yes, very nice... but... it's a concept.

How many concepts like this do we actually see materialize anywhere near the form we see them in at the car shows. (yes, some, you don't need to point them out to me)

I'm far more interested in zero emission cars when they become production... THEN they interest me. Especially if they are a price I can afford.

Our family runs on one car at the moment (2 adults, 3 kids)... we do so partly because of cost, but partly because we don't want to contribute any more pollution. Now we are getting near the time a second car will be almost a necessity, and we are so wishing that there could be some affordable zero, or close to zero, emission car for us to buy in a couple of years here in Australia.

What are our hopes?

Next to damn diddly that's what.

Yes this stuff irks me. Car companies make a big show of coming out with more efficient vehicles but can you get one? Nope. At least not in Canada - yet. Transport Canada prohibits the import of most extremely efficient vehicles here. And you can forget about the electric cars made here, but I heard that policy might change.

On a completely subject, if I may; why is it that concept cars, for the most part, tend to have these rounded off bulbous dumpy bodies? Why can't an environmentally sound vehicle with all its toys be encased in something with a little more lines? Something that isn't from claymation.
