One of the world's greatest authorities on the Middle Ages, Professor Robert Bartlett explores how beliefs, and the supernatural played a role in the minds of the medieval man.

The medieval dead shared the world with the living: the cult of the saints, encounters with the dead, and visions of the next world were all seen as proof of a two-way traffic between this world and the next.

I have to admit that even though I'm an atheist, the simple life of a monk has a certain appeal. Their austere lifestyle is something that I think more people should study, because we have so much stupid, useless crap cluttering our lives.

But I would still need my laptop.

My problem with being a monk lies in my perception of monkhood. It sounds appealing in snapshots, but try to imagine what they do all day long.... for a full day, like... every day.
