IBM: Use Light Instead of Wires for Computer Chips

This is a promotional video from IBM which talks about revolutionizing silicon chip technology by using light (photons) instead of electricity (electrons) to increase computing power. Definitely geek, but still enlightening to non-geeks; no pun intended.

I realize it's not holodeck technology ya f***ing dolt.

I'm saying this will lead to much faster and more powerful computers which means we're that much closer to being able to build something as immersive as a holodeck.

This technology is new. There have been opto-isolated circuits around for a long time. It elimimnates the grounding differences between difference circuit components by transmitting data optically. It looks like IBM has taken this to the intra circuit board level. This has NOTHING to do with "Holodecks" or "hollowheads".

OMFG. I KNOW IT's NOT HOLODECK TECHNOLOGY OR DIRECTLY RELATED TO "HOLODECKS." All I was fucking saying is "yay computers will eventually get fast enough that we can build something as immersive as a holodeck."

Fuck me.
